5. THE YOGA DAY
AND IT’S ORIGIN
The International Yoga Day has been
celebrated annually on 21 June since 2015
following its inception in the United Nations
General Assembly in 2014. The proposal for
this is presented by Indian Prime Minister,
Narendra Modi, in his UN address and
suggested the date of 21 June, as it is the
longest day of the year in the Northern
Hemisphere, when Lord Shiva is believed to
have imparted the knowledge of Yoga to the
world who is also known as Adi Guru –
teacher to all yogis in the world.
6. What is Yoga??
The word Yoga essentially means that
which brings you to the reality. It is derived
from the Sanskrit word Yuj which literally
means Union. Union means it brings you to
the ultimate reality. So, Yoga means union
of our little, ego self with the divine Self. It
is a group of physical, mental and spiritual
practices which originated in the ancient
India. The Indian sage Patanjali is
considered as the profounder of the
practice of Yoga.

the social distance.
So, it’s quite beneficial to stay at home and
celebrate this great day with family.
13. How To Celebrate The
International Yoga Day 2020 At
Home???
This year, we can practice yoga
from our homes, with our families,
by following the Common Yoga
Protocol or CYP on June 21 from
7am to 7:45 am. The CYP is
available on yoga website, the
website of Union Ministry of AYUSH
and social media handles. The
protocol will also be played on
several television channels.
15. Some Guidelines for performing Yoga….
Cleanliness is prerequisite for yogic practice. It includes cleanliness of
surroundings, body and mind.
Yogic practice should be performed in a calm and quite atmosphere with a
relaxed body and mind.
Yogic practice should be done on an empty stomach or light stomach.
Consume small amount of honey in lukewarm water if you feel week.
A mattress or yoga mat or folder blanket should be used for practice.
Light and confortable cotton clothes are preferred to facilitate easy
movement of the body.
Yoga should not be performed instate of exhaustion, illness, in a hurry or in
acute stress conditions.
Yoga experts should be consulted before doing Yoga practices during
pregnancy and menstruation.

Practice session should start with a prayer as it creates
conducive environment to relax the mind.
Yogic practice should be performed slowly, in a relaxed manner,
with awareness of body and breath.
Breathing should be always from nostrils unless instructed
otherwise.
Do not hold the body tightly.
Perform the practice according to your own capacity.
Yoga session should end with meditation/ deep silence.
Bath or food may be taken only after 20-30 minutes of practice.
