Project objectives
Improve knowledge and skills relating to CAD / CAM
Develop understanding of plastics – acrylic and PVC.
Develop understanding regarding why we package products
Develop understanding of movement and cams learnt in Y7
Learning Objective 1 – Develop a clearer understanding as to how and
why we package products? Practical design and manufacture a box
made from two pieces of A5 card.

Learning objective 2 - To learn the benefits of
sketching, modelling and drawing using CAD / CAM
• Sketch ideas for the acrylic toy – use the planning sheet to
help you get your idea the right size and shape before drawing
the design on 2D Design
Cut the template out.
Transfer it onto card.
Is it right?
Alter until you get it the
correct size – stick the
models onto your A3
design sheet and explain
what you have done and
why.
Use the advice on the
front of your assessment
sheet to make sure that
you get maximum
marks.
Learning Objective 3 - Transferring your design onto Techsoft 2D
Design
1. With 2D Design on the
page Open a file
2. Go to Common File
3. Design Technology
4. Mr Wood Y8 CAD Toy and
click on the Template
with 2D Design.
Use the curvy line drawing
tool to draw your design onto
the template.
Change all lines to be cut out
to red.
Engraved lines to blue.
Save your work on the USB
drive in the correct folder.
Laser it out in card and then
acrylic.
Top Tips
Adding dimensions
Group your
drawings so you can
move them easily
around the page.

LINES
Select – turn the drawing purple – edit - group
When cutting out of acrylic set
your drawing on the page
exactly where it needs to be
cut out before you go to the
laser.
Save your work on separate
pages if doing different
colours.
Make sure that you have done the 6 tasks explaining your design ideas – task 2.
Stick your card model down onto your design page.
Colour them in in the colours you want the acrylic to be.
Add dimensions to your drawings.
Explain how the toy will fit together.
Explain why you like or dislike your design.
If you alter the design – what will / have you altered and why?
Wet and dry the edges of the acrylic – remember
No laser marks on your toys head, body and tail with two working parts = A5a or 5b
Cut dowel pegs to 17mm long and assemble your toy.
Produce your Stika work

• Look at the example in the folder to get you
started.
• What could you do to improve it?
• Look at the IKEA examples and then think how
best you could present it.
• What size does it need to be?

1. Print off your cad drawings and stick onto your design sheet 2 – explain as much as you
can about what you have done.
2. Complete your instructions and photocopy a copy to stick onto your design sheet 2.
3. Look at your box could you improve it by adding a photograph of your finished toy?
4. Make sure that you have done the 6 tasks explaining your design ideas – task 2.
5. No laser marks on your toys head, body and tail with two working parts = 5a or 5b
6. Stika evident?
7. Good then you have finished hand your folder to Mr Wood and get your final grade.
Well done !

Year 8 cad toy instructions

  • 1. Year 8 CAD Toy Project Project objectives Improve knowledge and skills relating to CAD / CAM Develop understanding of plastics – acrylic and PVC. Develop understanding regarding why we package products Develop understanding of movement and cams learnt in Y7
  • 2. Learning Objective 1 – Develop a clearer understanding as to how and why we package products? Practical design and manufacture a box made from two pieces of A5 card. • I • P • I • C • T • P • D I P rotection Inform Contain Transport Preserve Display If this is your box what 7 pieces of information will You put on your box and where? 1 - barcode here. Finish drawing the box, find the images, re size them and make your box. Use this mnemonic to help you remember
  • 3. Learning objective 2 - To learn the benefits of sketching, modelling and drawing using CAD / CAM • Sketch ideas for the acrylic toy – use the planning sheet to help you get your idea the right size and shape before drawing the design on 2D Design Cut the template out. Transfer it onto card. Is it right? Alter until you get it the correct size – stick the models onto your A3 design sheet and explain what you have done and why. Use the advice on the front of your assessment sheet to make sure that you get maximum marks.
  • 4. Learning Objective 3 - Transferring your design onto Techsoft 2D Design 1. With 2D Design on the page Open a file 2. Go to Common File 3. Design Technology 4. Mr Wood Y8 CAD Toy and click on the Template with 2D Design. Use the curvy line drawing tool to draw your design onto the template. Change all lines to be cut out to red. Engraved lines to blue. Save your work on the USB drive in the correct folder. Laser it out in card and then acrylic.
  • 5. Top Tips Adding dimensions Group your drawings so you can move them easily around the page. DIM LINES Select – turn the drawing purple – edit - group When cutting out of acrylic set your drawing on the page exactly where it needs to be cut out before you go to the laser. Save your work on separate pages if doing different colours.
  • 6. Make sure that you have done the 6 tasks explaining your design ideas – task 2. Stick your card model down onto your design page. Colour them in in the colours you want the acrylic to be. Add dimensions to your drawings. Explain how the toy will fit together. Explain why you like or dislike your design. If you alter the design – what will / have you altered and why? Wet and dry the edges of the acrylic – remember No laser marks on your toys head, body and tail with two working parts = A5a or 5b Cut dowel pegs to 17mm long and assemble your toy. Assembly Instructions • Your task is to produce a set of assembly instructions for your toy. • Look at the example in the folder to get you started. • What could you do to improve it? • Look at the IKEA examples and then think how best you could present it. • What size does it need to be? Task learning objective to develop drawing presentational skills and analysing existing designs

Print off your cad drawings and stick onto your design sheet 2 – explain as much as you can about what you have done. 2. Complete your instructions and photocopy a copy to stick onto your design sheet 2. 3. Look at your box could you improve it by adding a photograph of your finished toy? 4. Make sure that you have done the 6 tasks explaining your design ideas – task 2. 5. No laser marks on your toys head, body and tail with two working parts = 5a or 5b 6. Stika evident? 7.
