Renowned artist Wyland restored the iconic 586-foot Whaling Wall 31 mural at the AES power plant in Redondo Beach to help promote conservation for Earth Month. The restoration event also recognized 30 teachers for their environmental education efforts through the Wyland Foundation's "Earth Month Heroes" program. Throughout April, additional events will take place like the Los Angeles County Science Fair to continue inspiring ecological stewardship among youth with Wyland's Clean Water educational curriculum and mobile learning center. The initiative aims to create lasting change in environmental attitudes.

Photography students studied landscape traditions from 17th C. paintings to modern photography to understand ways that cultures frame ideas and ideals of landscape. They researched student exhibitions from Australia to plan a school exhibition. On a field trip to the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge they composed images that explored their own definitions and perspactives of framing landscape. They titled their exhibition: "[re}Defining Landscape" to reflect the many ways we use, abuse, and understand the landscapes around us.

An Iconic Local Landmark is Restored
To Help Converge on Conservation
REDONDO BEACH Renowned artist, Wyland capped his career off on Friday, March 31,
by reaffirming the importance of healthy oceans in restoring the Whaling Wall 31 mural
outside the AES power generating station in a concerted effort with other ecological
professionals to promote conservation in preparations for the coming earth month.
The Wyland Foundation launched their “Earth Month Heroes” promotion to
recognize 30 teachers (one for each day of Earth Month in April) of Southern California
who have found innovative ways to “do more with less” by inspiring their students to
become better stewards of the planet.
Environmental education activities presented by SeaLab and Water Education
Center at the AES plant ran for most of the day from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and were well
attended by general public and young students on field trips. Lunch was provided to the
public and offered an “eco-menu” of food items to creatively emphasize the event theme.
[This sentence on food being provided isn’t confirmed yet but there will be food for VIP’s –
probably speakers and honored teachers at the event]
Each of the 30 notable teachers received awards of $500 and classroom sets of the
Wyland Clean Water Challenge Educational Curriculum: designed to instruct and inspire
young people everywhere about marine science and the conservation of water quality on
our planet.
“I am happy to finish my career on a large scale project that rejuvenates not only the
mural, but also the attitudes towards the environment within the community,” said
Wyland. “I hope that my educational curriculum in Southern California makes its way to
more classrooms around the nation and creates an ecological mind set that will cause
change for a better world.”

2. Wyland worked on bringing the 586’ long x 95’ high Whaling Wall 31 back to life for
3 days prior to the kick off of the Earth Month Heroes event. The Dedication and Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony included from select individuals including: AES, Mayor Mike Gin, Mayor
Scotto of Torrance, Toyota representative, and Wyland. The Whaling Wall 31 has been
such a landmark to the city of Redondo Beach that they issued a commemorative coin
celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the Mural.
“ For 20 years now, we have valued the decorative mural that surrounds our plant
and marveled at its beauty and magnificence,” said [NAME - of AES]. “We are honored that
such an iconic piece of art that represents something more has been a part of our efforts in
preserving the planet as well.”
Along with the “Earth Month Heroes” event, Wyland Earth Month Celebration
continues at the Los Angeles County Science Fair, April 14-16, which will include Wyland
mural painting and tours for the Clean Water Mobile Learning Center. The Clean Water
Mobile Learning Center also plans on making appearances at select Southern California
Schools to broaden their reach in their educational efforts.
Wyland’s Clean Water Challenge has also been extended to the Mayors of Redondo
Beach, Manhattan Beach, Anaheim and more to implement this cause among the residents.
The city with the highest percentage of residents who participate in reducing consumption,
waste and pollution will get an environmental makeover at one of their schools and a
discount to Disney resorts throughout the month of May. Results will be announced at the
Earth Month Closing Reception on April 29.
