OUR MISSION
Each year, we consider ourselves fortunate when our indomitable
commitment to spreading the word about Earth Day Texas results in
40-percent growth in the number of exhibiting organizations.
Since our first event in 2011, broad-spectrum participation has been
the primary focus of Earth Day Texas. The reason is simple: We
may be able to interest everyone in conservation and sustainability
if organizations that are meaningful to everyone are present to
personalize the importance of conservation and sustainability.
This year, Earth Day Texas will have 771 environmental nonprofit groups,
government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions furnishing
1,731 exhibit spaces with their distinctive contributions to conservation
and sustainability. A partial list of new participants includes:
5 Gyres, 20th Century Fox, Asia Pulp and Paper, Ben & Jerry’s, BEST Robotics, Billions
in Change, Captain Planet Foundation, Carbon War Room, Colorado River Land Trust,
Columbia University, CPS Energy, The Dallas Morning News, Environmental Media
Association, FIRST®
in Texas Foundation, Gap Inc., GE Water and Process Technologies,
Georgia Aquarium, Huawei, IBM: Smarter Cities, International Paper, Kellogg Co.,
LEGO®
Build the Change, Nestlé Waters, Pratt & Whitney, Rainforest Trust, REI, The
Ritz-Carlton, Sabin Metal Corporation, Schneider Electric, Sierra Nevada, Stanford
University, Surfrider Foundation, The Trust for Public Land: Climate-Smart Cities™,
U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of State: Fishackathon,
UNICEF, UNICOR, University of California Los Angeles, University of Tulsa, U.S.
Department of Agriculture, and The Walt Disney Company.
The three-day event starts strong Friday, April 22, with exhibits,
speakers, student field trips, and the E•Day Conference, where
environmental and business leaders from 345 additional organizations
host meetings, conferences, continuing education workshops, and
special events.
Ted Roosevelt IV, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Katharine Hayhoe,
Karenna Gore, and Space Architect Constance Adams are just a few
of the leaders and luminaries who will address the audiences at Earth
Day Texas each day. The NASA Inflatable International Space Station,
LEGO®
Build the Change, Tree Climbers International, and E-Bike
Test Track are just a few of the interactive experiences that will create
excitement throughout the weekend.
Celebrated Texas artists will play music by the west side of the
Esplanade near the Sustainable Beer Garden and Local Food Market
curated by Untapped Beer Festival and Savor Dallas. Film will also be
well represented as the Environmental Media Association brings to
Dallas celebrities and filmmakers for the EMA | EDTx Celebrities for
Change Fundraising Gala and EMA | EDTx Eco-Film Series.
We would like to express our gratitude to those who make it possible
to hold an environmental event that offers something sustainable for
everyone. We look forward to seeing you at Earth Day Texas 2016!
Each April, Earth Day Texas
hosts the world’s largest public
exhibition devoted to environmental
stewardship, where attendees come
together for breakthrough hope
and discovery about how best to
achieve a world of sustainable
balance. The event is a platform that
brings businesses, environmental
organizations, academic institutions,
and government agencies together
to positively inspire people to think,
live, and work sustainably.

ECO-FILM SERIES SCHEDULE
SATURDAY
In Gardeners of Eden, actor,
philanthropist, and producer
Kristin Davis takes you on
a gripping, first-person journey inside the
operations of Kenya’s David Sheldrick Wildlife
Trust. From the front lines of the crisis, we
witness their heroic efforts to stop the poachers
in the bush, rescue the orphans of slain
elephants, and raise them by hand until, one day,
returning them to their home in the wild.
Extinction Soup follows
documentary filmmaker Philip
Waller on his quest for adventure
as he sets out to tell the story of his larger-than-
life friend and extreme sports legend Jimmy
Hall. The film quickly takes a surprise turn when
Waller finds himself consumed with exposing to
the world an environmental catastrophe in the
making — the extinction of the oceans’ shark
population through the mass slaughter of these
magnificent animals for their fins.
Consumed is a dramatic thriller
that explores the complex
world of genetically modified
food. The story is anchored by a working-class,
single mother on a hunt to uncover the cause
of her son’s mysterious illness. Interwoven are
the stories of an organic farmer, the CEO of a
biotechnology corporation, two scientists on
the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop
caught in the middle of it all.

Director and award-winning
filmmaker Greg Reitman invites
viewers on a film journey to take
notice of the world we live in, proactively seek
ways to find personal and ecological peace, and
stop the cycle of violence. The film incorporates

interviews with renowned experts including
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, green architect William
McDonough, and neuroscientist Dan Siegel.
Decades of decline in Haiti have
taken their toll and today the
country is 98 percent deforested
with little of its once prosperous agricultural
industry enduring. To address these problems,
the outdoor lifestyle company, Timberland,
committed to creating a sustainable intervention
in Haiti. This film follows Timberland’s five-
year mission to support a nascent partnership
between a Haitian agronomist and a former NGO
leader to empower communities of farmers to plant millions of trees
while improving their crop yields.

EARTH TANK PRIZE
Earth Tank Prize, an initiative
of Earth Day Texas in concert
with the Dallas Festival of Ideas
(DFOI), will award a total of
$25,000 in prize money to three
environmental nonprofit groups
with important conservation and
sustainability projects in Texas.
Inspired by the popular
show Shark Tank, the Earth
Tank Prize will be a pitch-
style competition in which
nonprofits participating in
EDTx 2016 will be able to
present their innovative
ideas for conservation and
environmental protection
to a panel of EDTx and
DFOI judges.
EARTH TANK FINALISTS
THE CHALLENGE
With 50 percent of the fish caught
for human consumption coming
from small-scale and artisanal
fisheries, the livelihoods of these
fishermen are crucial for their
communities. To address all the
management challenges facing
these fisheries, we need to find innovative ways to
collect data and use it to find solutions.
THE HISTORY
Launched in 2014 around
Secretary of State John
Kerry’s “Our Ocean”
conference, Fishackathon
was established to bring
together volunteer coders
to create tools to address
challenges in sustainable
fishing around the world.
THE HACKATHON
Kicking off Earth Day 2016,
the U.S. Department of
State will hold the third-
annual Fishackathon from
April 22 to 24 in more
than 40 cities around
the world. Volunteer
coders, technologists,
and designers will spend
a weekend developing
usable solutions to
problem statements from
fisheries experts around the world. At the end, teams
will present their work to an expert panel of judges
who will nominate a winner, eligible for worldwide
grand prizes.
The EDTx Fishackathon will take place at the work
space in Centennial Hall. The event will run from
Friday at 5:30 PM to Sunday at 12:00 PM. Judging of
the projects begins at 1:00 PM on Sunday.

LEGO®
BUILD THE CHANGE
The LEGO Group, whose
mission is to inspire and
develop the builders of
tomorrow, is bringing
their fun and inspirational
Build the Change event to
Dallas. During this three-
day building event, children
will be inspired to build
their version of a more
sustainable future using
millions of LEGO®
bricks.
We look forward to seeing
you and your family for
hours of fun and creative
LEGO play.
During the Build the
Change event, children
will be asked to explore
questions of development
as they relate to the city
of Dallas, specifically
the debate over the
future of Highway 345.
The future leaders of
our city will build what
they find most valuable, whether it is walkability or
highway accessibility, and how they envision Dallas to

The LUNG FORCE Walk raises
awareness of serious health risks like
the frightening rise of lung cancer in
women, the deadly disease COPD,
daily challenges faced by asthma
sufferers, and the pollution that
threatens lungs and lives.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Lung cancer is the No. 1
cancer killer in America,
and most people aren’t
aware.
• Anyone can get it — if
you have lungs, you can
get lung cancer, and it’s
on the rise in women.
• More than 33 million
Americans suffer from
asthma, COPD (which
includes emphysema and
chronic bronchitis), and
other lung diseases.
• Every five minutes, a
woman in the U.S. is told
she has lung cancer.

2016 - Event Guide FINAL

  • 1. APRIL 22-24 • 10 AM - 6 PM • FAIR PARK • FREE • EARTHDAYTX.ORG The place where environmentally conscious organizations, businesses, institutions, you, and your friends and family get together to celebrate the Earth and create sustainable solutions to make a difference today, tomorrow, and every day thereafter. EVENT GUIDE
  • 2. 2 1 THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN EDTx 2016 TRAMMELL S. CROW FOUNDER JERRY L. HESS CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER CONTENTS OUR MISSION Each year, we consider ourselves fortunate when our indomitable commitment to spreading the word about Earth Day Texas results in 40-percent growth in the number of exhibiting organizations. Since our first event in 2011, broad-spectrum participation has been the primary focus of Earth Day Texas. The reason is simple: We may be able to interest everyone in conservation and sustainability if organizations that are meaningful to everyone are present to personalize the importance of conservation and sustainability. This year, Earth Day Texas will have 771 environmental nonprofit groups, government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions furnishing 1,731 exhibit spaces with their distinctive contributions to conservation and sustainability. A partial list of new participants includes: 5 Gyres, 20th Century Fox, Asia Pulp and Paper, Ben & Jerry’s, BEST Robotics, Billions in Change, Captain Planet Foundation, Carbon War Room, Colorado River Land Trust, Columbia University, CPS Energy, The Dallas Morning News, Environmental Media Association, FIRST® in Texas Foundation, Gap Inc., GE Water and Process Technologies, Georgia Aquarium, Huawei, IBM: Smarter Cities, International Paper, Kellogg Co., LEGO® Build the Change, Nestlé Waters, Pratt & Whitney, Rainforest Trust, REI, The Ritz-Carlton, Sabin Metal Corporation, Schneider Electric, Sierra Nevada, Stanford University, Surfrider Foundation, The Trust for Public Land: Climate-Smart Cities™, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of State: Fishackathon, UNICEF, UNICOR, University of California Los Angeles, University of Tulsa, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and The Walt Disney Company. The three-day event starts strong Friday, April 22, with exhibits, speakers, student field trips, and the E•Day Conference, where environmental and business leaders from 345 additional organizations host meetings, conferences, continuing education workshops, and special events. Ted Roosevelt IV, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, Karenna Gore, and Space Architect Constance Adams are just a few of the leaders and luminaries who will address the audiences at Earth Day Texas each day. The NASA Inflatable International Space Station, LEGO® Build the Change, Tree Climbers International, and E-Bike Test Track are just a few of the interactive experiences that will create excitement throughout the weekend. Celebrated Texas artists will play music by the west side of the Esplanade near the Sustainable Beer Garden and Local Food Market curated by Untapped Beer Festival and Savor Dallas. Film will also be well represented as the Environmental Media Association brings to Dallas celebrities and filmmakers for the EMA | EDTx Celebrities for Change Fundraising Gala and EMA | EDTx Eco-Film Series. We would like to express our gratitude to those who make it possible to hold an environmental event that offers something sustainable for everyone. We look forward to seeing you at Earth Day Texas 2016! Each April, Earth Day Texas hosts the world’s largest public exhibition devoted to environmental stewardship, where attendees come together for breakthrough hope and discovery about how best to achieve a world of sustainable balance. The event is a platform that brings businesses, environmental organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies together to positively inspire people to think, live, and work sustainably. 2016 Sponsors Event Overview Event Programming Workshop Schedule Friday Activities Speaker Schedule Green Speaker Series Eco-Film Series Schedule Music Series Schedule KERA Family Zone Event Maps E•Day Conferences Additional Programming Exhibitors: By Department EMA | EDTx Celebrities for Change Gala Exhibitors: Alphabetical 2 4 6 10 12 14 18 22 26 28 32 42 44 50 62 64

  • 13. 22 23 PRESENTING THE BEST NEW ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTARIES AND FILMS 11:00 AM – 5:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM Earth Day Texas believes strongly in the power of film to influence hearts and change minds. We proved this in 2015 when EDTx hosted the Texas premiere of the celebrated film Racing Extinction. In 2016, EDTx is curating a film series of new environmental documentaries to show all weekend. ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION The Environmental Media Association (EMA) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by Cindy and Alan Horn and Lyn and Norman Lear. EMA inspires solutions for the environment through continued impact in media and pop culture. EMA focuses on action programs, PSA campaigns, celebrity and brand role modeling, educational salons, solution-oriented conferences, placing green storylines into film and television productions, and using the iconic EMA Awards Gala as a platform to help create a more environmentally responsible future. ECO-FILM SERIES SCHEDULE SATURDAY In Gardeners of Eden, actor, philanthropist, and producer Kristin Davis takes you on a gripping, first-person journey inside the operations of Kenya’s David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. From the front lines of the crisis, we witness their heroic efforts to stop the poachers in the bush, rescue the orphans of slain elephants, and raise them by hand until, one day, returning them to their home in the wild. Extinction Soup follows documentary filmmaker Philip Waller on his quest for adventure as he sets out to tell the story of his larger-than- life friend and extreme sports legend Jimmy Hall. The film quickly takes a surprise turn when Waller finds himself consumed with exposing to the world an environmental catastrophe in the making — the extinction of the oceans’ shark population through the mass slaughter of these magnificent animals for their fins. Consumed is a dramatic thriller that explores the complex world of genetically modified food. The story is anchored by a working-class, single mother on a hunt to uncover the cause of her son’s mysterious illness. Interwoven are the stories of an organic farmer, the CEO of a biotechnology corporation, two scientists on the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop caught in the middle of it all. GARDENERS OF EDEN EXTINCTION SOUP Stick around after for a Q&A with producer Jorja Fox, known for her role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM WOMEN’S MUSEUM PRESENTED WITH THE ENVIRONMENTAL MEDIA ASSOCIATION CONSUMED Followed by a Q&A with filmmakers Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones.

To address these problems, the outdoor lifestyle company, Timberland, committed to creating a sustainable intervention in Haiti. • 24. 44 45 EARTH TANK PRIZE Earth Tank Prize, an initiative of Earth Day Texas in concert with the Dallas Festival of Ideas (DFOI), will award a total of $25,000 in prize money to three environmental nonprofit groups with important conservation and sustainability projects in Texas. Inspired by the popular show Shark Tank, the Earth Tank Prize will be a pitch- style competition in which nonprofits participating in EDTx 2016 will be able to present their innovative ideas for conservation and environmental protection to a panel of EDTx and DFOI judges. EARTH TANK FINALISTS THE CHALLENGE With 50 percent of the fish caught for human consumption coming from small-scale and artisanal fisheries, the livelihoods of these fishermen are crucial for their communities. To address all the management challenges facing these fisheries, we need to find innovative ways to collect data and use it to find solutions. THE HISTORY Launched in 2014 around Secretary of State John Kerry’s “Our Ocean” conference, Fishackathon was established to bring together volunteer coders to create tools to address challenges in sustainable fishing around the world. THE HACKATHON Kicking off Earth Day 2016, the U.S. Department of State will hold the third- annual Fishackathon from April 22 to 24 in more than 40 cities around the world. Volunteer coders, technologists, and designers will spend a weekend developing usable solutions to problem statements from fisheries experts around the world. At the end, teams will present their work to an expert panel of judges who will nominate a winner, eligible for worldwide grand prizes. During this three- day building event, children will be inspired to build their version of a more sustainable future using millions of LEGO® bricks. We look forward to seeing you and your family for hours of fun and creative LEGO play. During the Build the Change event, children will be asked to explore questions of development as they relate to the city of Dallas, specifically the debate over the future of Highway 345.
