The Arts on Farms and in Farm-Based Education workshop addresses traditional and developing relationships between the arts and farming,
supporting educators looking to incorporate the arts into their farm or garden-based teaching. We will start with reflection about the arts in relation to farming, move into a discussion centered on specific art-farm initiatives and finish with an art activity that can be easily adapted for any group of learners.
This presentation previews the 2016 World Conservation Congress - #IUCNCongress – and sets out goals by which to measure the event in terms of open access, remote participation, responsible travel, attention to Indigenous Peoples and local engagement. This is a work in progress. Comments are welcome and so are embeds, likes, clips and shares.

OUR MISSION
Each year, we consider ourselves fortunate when our indomitable
commitment to spreading the word about Earth Day Texas results in
40-percent growth in the number of exhibiting organizations.
Since our first event in 2011, broad-spectrum participation has been
the primary focus of Earth Day Texas. The reason is simple: We
may be able to interest everyone in conservation and sustainability
if organizations that are meaningful to everyone are present to
personalize the importance of conservation and sustainability.
This year, Earth Day Texas will have 771 environmental nonprofit groups,
government agencies, businesses, and academic institutions furnishing
1,731 exhibit spaces with their distinctive contributions to conservation
and sustainability. A partial list of new participants includes:
5 Gyres, 20th Century Fox, Asia Pulp and Paper, Ben & Jerry’s, BEST Robotics, Billions
in Change, Captain Planet Foundation, Carbon War Room, Colorado River Land Trust,
Columbia University, CPS Energy, The Dallas Morning News, Environmental Media
Association, FIRST®
in Texas Foundation, Gap Inc., GE Water and Process Technologies,
Georgia Aquarium, Huawei, IBM: Smarter Cities, International Paper, Kellogg Co.,
LEGO®
Build the Change, Nestlé Waters, Pratt & Whitney, Rainforest Trust, REI, The
Ritz-Carlton, Sabin Metal Corporation, Schneider Electric, Sierra Nevada, Stanford
University, Surfrider Foundation, The Trust for Public Land: Climate-Smart Cities™,
U.S. Air Force, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of State: Fishackathon,
UNICEF, UNICOR, University of California Los Angeles, University of Tulsa, U.S.
Department of Agriculture, and The Walt Disney Company.
The three-day event starts strong Friday, April 22, with exhibits,
speakers, student field trips, and the E•Day Conference, where
environmental and business leaders from 345 additional organizations
host meetings, conferences, continuing education workshops, and
special events.
Ted Roosevelt IV, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Katharine Hayhoe,
Karenna Gore, and Space Architect Constance Adams are just a few
of the leaders and luminaries who will address the audiences at Earth
Day Texas each day. The NASA Inflatable International Space Station,
LEGO®
Build the Change, Tree Climbers International, and E-Bike
Test Track are just a few of the interactive experiences that will create
excitement throughout the weekend.
Celebrated Texas artists will play music by the west side of the
Esplanade near the Sustainable Beer Garden and Local Food Market
curated by Untapped Beer Festival and Savor Dallas. Film will also be
well represented as the Environmental Media Association brings to
Dallas celebrities and filmmakers for the EMA | EDTx Celebrities for
Change Fundraising Gala and EMA | EDTx Eco-Film Series.
We would like to express our gratitude to those who make it possible
to hold an environmental event that offers something sustainable for
everyone. We look forward to seeing you at Earth Day Texas 2016!
Each April, Earth Day Texas
hosts the world’s largest public
exhibition devoted to environmental
stewardship, where attendees come
together for breakthrough hope
and discovery about how best to
achieve a world of sustainable
balance. The event is a platform that
brings businesses, environmental
organizations, academic institutions,
and government agencies together
to positively inspire people to think,
live, and work sustainably.

SATURDAY
In Gardeners of Eden, actor,
philanthropist, and producer
Kristin Davis takes you on
a gripping, first-person journey inside the
operations of Kenya’s David Sheldrick Wildlife
Trust. From the front lines of the crisis, we
witness their heroic efforts to stop the poachers
in the bush, rescue the orphans of slain
elephants, and raise them by hand until, one day,
returning them to their home in the wild.
Extinction Soup follows
documentary filmmaker Philip
Waller on his quest for adventure
as he sets out to tell the story of his larger-than-
life friend and extreme sports legend Jimmy
Hall. The film quickly takes a surprise turn when
Waller finds himself consumed with exposing to
the world an environmental catastrophe in the
making — the extinction of the oceans’ shark
population through the mass slaughter of these
magnificent animals for their fins.
Consumed is a dramatic thriller
that explores the complex
world of genetically modified
food. The story is anchored by a working-class,
single mother on a hunt to uncover the cause
of her son’s mysterious illness. Interwoven are
the stories of an organic farmer, the CEO of a
biotechnology corporation, two scientists on
the verge of a major discovery, and an ex-cop
caught in the middle of it all.

THE CHALLENGE
With 50 percent of the fish caught
for human consumption coming
from small-scale and artisanal
fisheries, the livelihoods of these
fishermen are crucial for their
communities. To address all the
management challenges facing
these fisheries, we need to find innovative ways to
collect data and use it to find solutions.
THE HISTORY
Launched in 2014 around
Secretary of State John
Kerry’s “Our Ocean”
conference, Fishackathon
was established to bring
together volunteer coders
to create tools to address
challenges in sustainable
fishing around the world.
THE HACKATHON
Kicking off Earth Day 2016,
the U.S. Department of
State will hold the third-
annual Fishackathon from
April 22 to 24 in more
than 40 cities around
the world. Volunteer
coders, technologists,
and designers will spend
a weekend developing
usable solutions to
problem statements from
fisheries experts around the world. At the end, teams
will present their work to an expert panel of judges
who will nominate a winner, eligible for worldwide
grand prizes.
The EDTx Fishackathon will take place at the work
space in Centennial Hall. The event will run from
Friday at 5:30 PM to Sunday at 12:00 PM. Judging of
the projects begins at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
