Writing Assignment #3
“What I learned during Human Relations”
DUE: AT OUR FINAL EXAM – THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2013
Deciding what is abnormal or suffering from psychological disorder in Chapter 13 was
very interesting. The information about decision making and labeling individuals gave
me a better perspective on mental illness vs. normal behavior.
We the untrained professional base abnormality on what is normal in our culture or what
society says is normal. Some people label or categorize a person just by knowing them
personally or through mutual friends’ history. When passing judgment on this person you
need to weigh the pros and cons. This is important because well-meant intentions may
result in harmful outcomes.
I have learned that human behavior is an individual’s actions and behaviors on trial
everyday by society. We look and judge one’s behavior on what we are taught and have
learned from our own experiences as acceptable behavior in our own subjective minds.
Personal opinions, assumptions and beliefs vs. Observable of measurable facts are the
issues when judging; “What is abnormal”?
What I have learned in this class will be used in my personal and professional life. As I
look around the room at my professor and classmates and listen to the various responses
and explanations during discussion periods, I see the benefit of keeping an open mind
while observing and listening to others.I believe that consideration of all facts on
assessmentwill produce good and, intelligent decisions.
My favorite topic was humanistic theories and my least favorite topic was how
conditioning can make individuals behavior change. In my opinion individuals are not
conditioned. Our behaviors are constructed by our environment and socioeconomic
stature.Self-directionis then put in motion to fulfill our basic needs.I believe we label this
as “survival”.
