Political developments in the Soviet Union following World War II saw Andrei Zhdanov promote strict conformity to the Communist Party line. However, fewer Communists were purged during this time compared to the Great Terror. The growth of the Cold War and conflict with the West led to increased nationalism in the Soviet Union. With Stalin growing frail and Zhdanov's death in 1948, other Communist leaders like Beria and Malenkov launched purges in Leningrad and Georgia to position themselves as Stalin's successor. Anti-Semitism also increased as several Russian Jews were executed for treason in fabricated cases.
Andrei Zhdanov was a leading figure in the Soviet regime after 1945 who promoted strict conformity to the Party line. He opposed Western influences like jazz and dictated cultural policies. As the Cold War emerged, he led a campaign against "cosmopolitanism" and promoted Russian nationalism. With Stalin growing frail and Zhdanov's sudden death in 1948, other Communists jockeyed for power. Beria and Malenkov launched a purge of Leningrad Party officials in which over 200 were arrested and some executed. They also orchestrated a purge of officials in Georgia, seen as an attack on Beria, who was allowed to survive. In 1948 and 1953, there were also

A Perspective on our Judgment and Acceptance of People….. Manish Parsuramka
The document discusses judging and accepting people based on superficial characteristics alone. It presents brief descriptions of Mr. A, Mr. B, and Mr. C, implying Mr. C would be the best choice based on habits. However, it then reveals Mr. A was Franklin Roosevelt, Mr. B was Winston Churchill, and Mr. C was Adolf Hitler, cautioning against superficial judgments. Several additional passages note that character is complex, people should be accepted instead of judged, a person's mindset can destroy them more than outside forces, and how one handles stress matters more than the stress itself.
The document contains 3 passages from the magazine Frontline that summarize stories in their upcoming issues.
The first passage discusses a six-part feature on Buddhist art and sculpture as well as stories on economics, world affairs, science, essays and columns.
The second passage talks about the recent outrage against an anti-Islam film and rising resentment against US intervention and drone strikes in the Muslim world. It questions if there will ever be an end to this problem.
The third passage commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis and profiles Vasili Arkhipov, whose decision not to fire nuclear missiles likely prevented World War 3. It also promotes a special story with declassified information on the crisis.
The document discusses several instances from the Bible where women decapitated or killed men by removing or damaging their heads. It mentions Judith decapitating Holofernes, Yael driving a stake through Sisera's temple, Haman and his sons being hanged after Esther informed the king of Haman's plot, and Delilah cutting Samson's hair to weaken him for the Philistines. The author notes that while these stories show women can be great fighters, it's important not to lose one's own head.
The document discusses assassinations throughout history, including prominent figures such as US presidents and Australian politicians. It notes that assassinations are usually surprise attacks for political purposes. The term derives from the Hashshashin, trained killers in the Middle East from the 10th-13th centuries who systematically eliminated opponents. Notable assassinations mentioned include John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Bobby Kennedy.

Flanagan, who also went by the name Bryce Williams, was a former employee at the television stations where the victims had worked. After the shooting, Flanagan posted video of the incident on social media and then took his own life. The motives for the shooting appeared to be racism and revenge for having been fired from his job.
George Washington's farewell address warned against political parties and foreign alliances. Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address honored civil war casualties and dedication to equality. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech called for an end to racism during the March on Washington. The document lists 10 important speeches in American history including addresses by Washington, Lincoln, Stanton, Bryan, Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and King.
The Battle of Shiloh from April 6-7, 1862 near the Tennessee River was one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. General Grant's Union army of 30,000 was surprised by General Johnston's Confederate army of 45,000. The Confederates pushed the Union back during the first day, but overnight General Buell brought 20,000 reinforcements. The next day the Union counterattacked and forced the Confederates to retreat, though both sides suffered heavy casualties totaling over 23,000. The battle halted the Confederate offensive in the Western Theater.
John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln at Ford's Theater on April 14, 1865. Booth was able to enter Lincoln's private box and shoot him below the left ear during a play. Booth then escaped by jumping to the stage and breaking his ankle. He was later killed while trying to evade capture on April 26, 1865. Aaron Copland composed his piece "Lincoln Portrait" in 1942 using quotes from Lincoln's speeches to portray the former president.
This document contains questions from various categories in American history including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars I and II, presidents, and more. The questions range from $100-$500 and cover topics such as key figures, dates, events, and outcomes. Some examples include questions about George Washington in the Revolutionary War, Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War, Woodrow Wilson as president during WWI, and the creation of the United Nations after WWII.
Shen visited UMBC to talk about her work as a journalist and entrepreneur. She founded Baltimore Brew after recognizing a need for better local news coverage as newspapers downsized. The Brew aims to provide accountability journalism for Baltimore and the surrounding region. With only three to four reporters, the Brew is able to break local stories and give voice to the voiceless. One example was their in-depth coverage of a hit-and-run involving a clergy member that was later picked up by larger papers. Shen reinforced that staying small and local allows for more thorough coverage of news than large organizations.
The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War and showed that the war would not be easily won by the Union. On July 21, 1861, General Irwin McDowell led 75,000 untrained Union volunteers against the Confederates led by Generals Beauregard and Johnston near Manassas Junction, Virginia. Though the Union initially pushed back the Confederate lines, reinforcements including "Stonewall" Jackson stabilized the defense. The Union troops then retreated in disorder, all the way to Washington, showing the war would be longer and bloodier than anticipated.
The Battle of Shiloh took place from April 6-7, 1862 near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee between 40,000 Confederate and 30,000 Union troops. On the first day, the Confederates launched a surprise attack that overwhelmed the Union forces, but a stand at a sunken road halted their momentum. That evening, the Confederates led by General Albert Sidney Johnston, who was mortally wounded, numbered 30,000 troops to the Union's remaining 20,000. On the second day, reinforcements arrived for Ulysses S. Grant's Union army, bringing their numbers to 40,000 and allowing them to counterattack the Confederates under P.G.T Beauregard, inflicting heavy casualties on both

This document provides a summary of General Stanley McChrystal's memoirs and assessments of the war in Afghanistan. It compares McChrystal's 2013 assessment maps of Taliban groups to an assessment from October 2010. The document also discusses Michael Hastings' critical narrative of the war and provides a timeline of the Afghan war from 2001-2014 with brief descriptions of key events each year. It then separately summarizes McChrystal's narrative from his memoirs and notes it was subject to censorship and diplomatic review by the US Department of Defense.
The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle of the American Civil War. On July 21, 1861, around 39,000 Union troops marched to Manassas Junction, Virginia to engage some 21,000 Confederate troops in an attempt to capture the vital railroad line. However, the Union forces were inexperienced and undisciplined, while the Confederates received reinforcements. This allowed the Confederates to halt the Union advance and eventually push their forces into a disorganized retreat back to Washington D.C. The battle proved that the war would not be short and ended Northern expectations of a quick victory, and both sides saw they needed extensive training before further combat.
The Battle of Shiloh occurred in April 1862 in Hardin County, Tennessee between the Union and Confederate forces. General Ulysses S. Grant's Union army was encamped along the Tennessee River poised to strike into the South when General Sidney Johnston launched a surprise Confederate attack, hoping for victory. Over two bloody days of fighting at Pittsburg Landing, the Union forces suffered heavy casualties but ultimately defeated the Confederates, dealing a major blow to Southern hopes of driving the Union out of Tennessee. Total casualties from the fierce battle exceeded 24,000 men.

It will include two unaired chapters and a new 90-minute documentary. Stone discusses engaging with viewers and receiving feedback on the documentary. He notes this will be his last big project for a while. Stone also announces screenings and a theatrical rerelease of his film "JFK" in November around the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination.
This document summarizes the third week of readings in a sports literature course. It discusses how 19th century writers originated the concept of the popular sports hero by creating legends of frontier figures like Davy Crockett. As sports became commercialized in the late 19th century, writers like Ring Lardner presented a more realistic portrayal of athletes while still retaining their heroic status. The emergence of popular sports heroes through literature helped unite a diverse American society and demonstrated the power of media to shape public perception of sports.

The Battle of Shiloh began on April 6, 1862 when Confederate forces led by General Albert Sidney Johnston launched a surprise attack on Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant. Though initially overwhelmed by the surprise assault, the Union forces were able to hold their position at a place known as the Hornet's Nest until reinforcements arrived the next day. This allowed them to counterattack and defeat the Confederate force, though the two-day battle resulted in over 23,000 casualties total. The Union victory proved important to their later success at Vicksburg and control of the Mississippi River.
Examine Different Types Of Dissent Within The Ussrguestaa7e0c
There were various forms of dissent against the Soviet regime under Brezhnev, including human rights activists who used the Helsinki Accords to demand more freedoms. The KGB actively suppressed dissent through threats, job removal, imprisonment, and confinement in mental hospitals. While most prominent dissidents were imprisoned or exiled by the 1980s, there remained inactive dissent from scientists who saw the regime as hindering economic progress. Religious dissent also emerged from Jews, Catholics, and Muslims. The Afghanistan war further criticized the regime and added to its economic problems.
John Wilkes Booth was born in 1838 into a famous acting family but had emotional instability. He strongly supported the Confederacy and hated that Lincoln was elected. On April 14, 1865, Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln by shooting him at Ford's Theatre, and then fled to a farm in Virginia where he was shot and killed by a Union soldier. Many of Booth's accomplices in the plot were later tried and four were hanged for their involvement.

The document discusses the importance of talking to war veterans from all wars. It states that veterans deserve respect for defending freedom and their stories deserve to be told. Many veterans return as changed people. The document urges taking time to speak with veterans to understand what they have in common, such as needing healthcare and therapy. It notes that it is hard for veterans to live on minimal pay with inflation, and many are too proud to ask for financial help. Speaking to veterans helps one understand they deserve land of their own after risking their lives.

World War II ended successfully because some tough decisions had to be made at the right time. Arguably, there are only a few who can this, which is why they are considered great leaders. We mention some of them today.
It’s not a mystery that the Second World War showed us military prowess never seen before in previous wars. From the Axis Powers to the Alliance, some alliances even had super countries which could single-handedly end the war by themselves. Here are 3 of these countries that held more power than most of the countries combined, John F Eilermann shares.
A quick escape: The popularity of baseball during the Second World WarJohn Eilermann St Louis
John Eilermann. In the US, the Second World War greatly affected the lives of the people. As many of the able, young men went off to war, the absence of loved ones caused loneliness and anxiety to those who remained home. While baseball was already famous before the war, it even gained more popular during the wartime years. Even if some of the sport's biggest stars like Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra had to serve during this time, people still found ways to enjoy the sport.
John Eilermann. (https://twitter.com/johneilermann) The Second World War was a harrowing period in world history. As many countries strived to rebuild their economy after the war, people started to innovate and build their own careers. Here are three WWII veterans who established successful post-war careers
Abraham Lincoln, Einstein, Yaser Arafat and Bal ThackerayTwinkle Sebastian
Einstein, Arafat, Lincoln, and Bal Thackeray will remain famous after death as their lives and work continue to be evaluated and re-evaluated. Lincoln worked to abolish slavery through war and legislation despite facing resistance. A new film provides further insights into Lincoln's complex personality and political skill. There is often an effort to re-examine famous historical figures to gain a more accurate understanding of who they were. Einstein and Arafat's remains have been examined by scientists and investigators respectively. Bal Thackeray was seen as sufficiently influential to warrant an obituary in The Economist, though he was a controversial figure in India.
The Assassination of General George S. PattonPeter Hammond
General George Patton, a highly decorated American war hero, opposed the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe after WWII. He believed the Soviets could not be trusted as allies and warned that they posed a threat. Patton was seen as a "loose cannon" by those supporting an appeasement policy towards the Soviets. He received warnings that Soviet leader Stalin had ordered his assassination by the NKVD secret police. Despite these warnings, Patton's concerns were ignored by some American leaders. He died in a mysterious car accident in December 1945, fueling speculation that he was assassinated on Stalin's orders to silence his criticisms of Soviet policy.

While Austin would gain economic benefits from the stadium, some council members expressed concerns that the city is giving up control and future tax revenue from the land.

The Evolution and Impact of OTT Platforms: A Deep Dive into the Future of Ent...ABHILASH DUTTA
This presentation provides a thorough examination of Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms, focusing on their development and substantial influence on the entertainment industry, with a particular emphasis on the Indian market. We begin with an introduction to OTT platforms, defining them as streaming services that deliver content directly over the internet, bypassing traditional broadcast channels. These platforms offer a variety of content, including movies, TV shows, and original productions, allowing users to access content on-demand across multiple devices. The historical context covers the early days of streaming, starting with Netflix's inception in 1997 as a DVD rental service and its transition to streaming in 2007. The presentation also highlights India's television journey, from the launch of Doordarshan in 1959 to the introduction of Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite television in 2000, which expanded viewing choices and set the stage for the rise of OTT platforms like Big Flix, Ditto TV, Sony LIV, Hotstar, and Netflix. The business models of OTT platforms are explored in detail. Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) models, exemplified by Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, offer unlimited content access for a monthly fee. Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD) models, like iTunes and Sky Box Office, allow users to pay for individual pieces of content. Advertising-Based Video on Demand (AVOD) models, such as YouTube and Facebook Watch, provide free content supported by advertisements. Hybrid models combine elements of SVOD and AVOD, offering flexibility to cater to diverse audience preferences.
Content acquisition strategies are also discussed, highlighting the dual approach of purchasing broadcasting rights for existing films and TV shows and investing in original content production. This section underscores the importance of a robust content library in attracting and retaining subscribers. The presentation addresses the challenges faced by OTT platforms, including the unpredictability of content acquisition and audience preferences. It emphasizes the difficulty of balancing content investment with returns in a competitive market, the high costs associated with marketing, and the need for continuous innovation and adaptation to stay relevant.
The impact of OTT platforms on the Bollywood film industry is significant. The competition for viewers has led to a decrease in cinema ticket sales, affecting the revenue of Bollywood films that traditionally rely on theatrical releases. Additionally, OTT platforms now pay less for film rights due to the uncertain success of films in cinemas.
Looking ahead, the future of OTT in India appears promising. The market is expected to grow by 20% annually, reaching a value of ₹1200 billion by the end of the decade. The increasing availability of affordable smartphones and internet access will drive this growth, making OTT platforms a primary source of entertainment for many viewers.

World-Renowned Soldiers Who Earned
The Purple Heart
The Purple Heart is the oldest award given to United States military personnel. The first was
given in 1917. It is an award that symbolizes exemplary sacrifice in the line of duty, and as
such is awarded to people who were either wounded or killed in combat.
Let’s take a look at some of the most famous recipients of the Purple Heart.
Charles Bronson: Charles Bronson was not only a bona fide Hollywood tough man for the
ages, but he was also a recipient of the Purple Heart. Bronson, who had gone on to star in hits
such as “The Magnificent Seven” and the “Death Wish” franchise, started out as part of the
Army Air Corps before he became a tail gunner for a B-29 in World War II.
Kurt Vonnegut: Esteemed author Kurt Vonnegut was a prisoner of war in World War II. It was
this experience that inspired him to come up with the story of “Slaughterhouse Five.” The book
would go on to be his most popular piece of work. He was awarded the Purple Heart from
being a frostbite victim.
Rod Serling: Sci-fi fans know the name of Rod Serling only too well. The creator of “The
Twilight Zone,” Serling used memories from his experience in the Philippines fighting against
the Japanese to come up with stories for his famous series. His group had one of the highest
casualty rates in the war, thus earning him the Purple Heart.
