A talk from the Main Stage at AWE USA 2019 - the World's #1 XR Conference & Expo in Santa Clara, California May 29-31, 2019.
Charlie Fink (XR Consultant, Forbes): Convergence
This is a historic moment. We are on the cusp of a new generation of mobile computing. Latency-free 5G broadband networks, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will converge in the next five years to change the world as we know it. Our devices will change dramatically and change us in ways no one can fully predict. Convergence tells the story of Augmented Reality, a new technology that’s seeping into every smartphone and every workplace. But the smartphone is just the beginning. We will soon wonder how we put up with its miserable form for so long. In this presentation of key ideas from his new book, author and Forbes columnist Charlie Fink will discuss how the convergence will lead to head-worn, interoperable AR/VR glasses and, ultimately, to wearable, invisible, computing. The book uses a kind of AR called "marker AR," to allow readers to use their smartphone to bring pages to life in surprising and entertaining ways to illustrate how the world, and everyone it, will be painted with data. More than a book about technology, this is about an evolutionary change in humankind.

Build once deploy everywhere using the telerik platformAspenware
The Telerik Platform is a suite of tools for developing, testing, deploying and analyzing hybrid mobile applications. Hybrid mobile applications are most commonly built using PhoneGap, which interprets HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript and compiles it into a package that can be delivered in the app stores. PhoneGap also utilizes Apache Cordova JavaScript APIs to access certain native mobile features of the device. The Telerik Platform uses AppBuilder to abstract the complexity of PhoneGap/Cordova and provides a more intuitive way to build hybrid mobile applications. If you are looking to expand your .NET and web based development skills into the mobile market this is the session for you.
Lessons learned:
-What a hybrid mobile apps can do
-How Icenium helps build a hybrid mobile app
-How you can leverage your current web knowledge and assets to create a mobile app
Shows the value of mobile apps, and explain what it takes to create your own. Focuses on Qt, licensing, app stores, cost of development etc.

Edtion: a bundle of finite content published with a certain frequency and belonging to a series of the same publication.
What can newspapers learn from this format they spent the past 400 years perfecting?
View Twipe CEO Danny Lein's key note presentation at the Digital Salon of the Danish news agency Ritzau in Copenhagen. He shares his views on the technologies that will shape the future of news media, on the short, medium and long term. Cases covered are Toutiao, Knowhere, Taboola, Associated Press, Emotient and many others.
In recent years, newspapers are re-discovering the power of editions as their core and unique value proposition. We interviewed 8 leading publishers (Le Monde, Die Welt, The Independent, Ouest-France, The Economist,…) about their experiences with the creation and roll-out of successful digital-only editions, defined as a bundle of finite content, published via digital channels with a certain frequency, belonging to a series, and with no counterpart in print containing the same content.

Het Nieuwsblad, one of the largest Belgian newspapers, has launched important updates of its newspaper apps. Through the PromoSpot on the homescreen Het Nieuwsblad aims to promote its wide range of magazines and supplements . For readers, the PromoSpot offers immediate access to complimentary publications included in their newspaper subscription.
Fast access to a variety of complimentary publications
On top of the daily newspaper, subscribers of Het Nieuwsblad, receive a broad range of additional supplements and magazines. Every Saturday for instance a Lifestyle Magazine, a Football Special, a Jobs supplement and a Tips magazine are published. Customer research indicated that within the newspaper apps, these supplements were not visible enough for the reader.
“Thanks to this update we are able to promote our supplements and magazines even more. Our readers have an immediate and clear overview of the available publications. The new home screen guides our readers in an easy way through our newspaper and its extra content. With this new version the reading experience will increase significantly.” Says Dorine Hendrickx – Digital Marketing Manager at Het Nieuwsblad.
PromoSpot: flexible feature managed by the publisher
When implementing this new feature, a balance had to be found between the main use case of fast access to the daily newspaper and providing overview to the bundle of other publications to which the subscriber is entitled. Moreover, many of the supplements, which are typically included in the Saturday package, need to be available and quickly accessible for a longer period of time.
“The new PromoSpot feature allows Het Nieuwsblad to define in a flexible way which publications should be shown. Every item in the PromoSpot has a priority and an expiration time,” says Gilles Van Mol – Senior Project Manager at Twipe.
Discover the updated apps of Het Nieuwsblad in the Apple AppStore or the Google PlayStore.
