Focus Groups, Citizens’ Juries and Open Space method: Innovative tools of pub...Iwl Pcu
This document discusses innovative tools for public involvement in water management decisions. It describes focus groups, citizens' juries, and open space methods. These tools increase public awareness, enrich the quality of decisions, and widen responsibility for outcomes. Examples from Estonia show how focus groups identified stakeholders' needs and a citizens' jury deliberated on water tourism. These methods promote understanding between perspectives and show that ordinary people can discuss complex water issues after careful consideration.

Presentation given during the Black Sea Ecosystem Recovery Project's Final Seminar in Istanbul, Turkey from 14-15 February 2008 by Emma Gileva of the
Black Sea NGO Network.
The document summarizes notes from a think tank meeting held in Zadar, Croatia to discuss creating sustainable tourism in the Kornati Islands archipelago. Representatives from local NGOs presented three projects being implemented with help from international volunteers: restoring olive groves, providing wireless connectivity, and reconstructing windmills. Think tank participants generated over 30 ideas in 9 categories to develop sustainable tourism products centered around recreation, wellness, food, crafts, culture, education, and events. Challenges to tourism development included poor infrastructure, inadequate services, water supply issues, and centralized decision making. Developing renewable energy and organic farming were also discussed.
This document provides an overview and agenda for an Arts Council briefing on the landscape for arts funding in 2015 and beyond. It discusses the political environment, the upcoming Spending Review, and strategies for making the case for continued public funding of the arts sector. Key points covered include shifting more funding outside of London, pursuing a goal of cultural education for all children, and preparing arts organizations for potential funding cuts of 5-20% in the coming years resulting from the Spending Review. The briefing aims to help arts groups understand the challenges and opportunities in this context.

This document summarizes efforts by Hillingdon Council libraries in London to engage local communities through a variety of events and programs. Some key points:
- Customer surveys showed dissatisfaction with book selection, library attractiveness, and computer facilities, prompting changes.
- Events now include storytimes, homework help, crafts, games, lectures, and more, targeting all ages and interests. Partnerships help promote literacy, health, and integration initiatives.
- Modernized facilities provide computers, books in many languages, and technology like Wii games consoles, attracting diverse patrons.
- Libraries function as community hubs, hosting groups and celebrations reflecting Hillingdon's cultural diversity.
MTCS presentation Cultural Summit October 6, 2015Hastings County
The document discusses the role of culture in community and economic development. It notes that culture contributes to strong communities by enhancing quality of place, reflecting diversity, and building pride. Culture also contributes economically by attracting talent and businesses, boosting tourism, and creating jobs. The document then outlines municipal cultural planning, which involves engaging communities to map cultural resources and integrate culture into local decision-making. Key steps include consultation, assessment, planning, implementation, and monitoring progress. Finally, the document provides context on Ontario's culture strategy consultation to update programs and support for culture.
The document summarizes an area development program along the Canal Roeselare-Leie in Belgium. The program began in 2005 and involves cooperation between 2 cities and 3 municipalities totaling around 110,000 inhabitants. Its goals were to develop an action plan for the multifunctional future of the canal zone and an anniversary program for the 150th anniversary of the canal in 2012. The anniversary program included over 50 activities between April and October 2012 across the communities to promote regional identity and was very successful in attracting residents and spontaneous additional events.
A review of our ten-year mission, the current political environment, the upcoming spending review, and advice on how to advocate to local and national politicians. Presented to delegates from the Arts Council's National Portfolio Organisations in July 2015.
The document discusses the use of the "Kid's Tracks" method for involving children and youth in urban planning processes. Kid's Tracks is a mapping exercise where children document how they use their neighborhoods. Their results identify important areas, access issues, and community values. Three municipalities that used Kid's Tracks are highlighted: Ski identified a need for more public spaces in the city center; Giske found poor access to the shoreline and nature; and Bodø recognized non-active areas. Lessons learned are that Kid's Tracks is only a participation tool, it creates a new focus on social values, and involving children makes participation more fun.
What is heritage, and why is it importantangelgate

It provides guidance on planning heritage projects, steps to avoid failure, asset transfers, and increasing community involvement. A case study on a community heritage project is presented, along with resources and further reading.
Community Environment Art & Design TownscapeJohn Latham
The document summarizes four townscape projects led by John Latham as the community townscape architect. The projects include:
1) The St Marys Townscape Project which produced a report addressing issues in the township and providing development opportunities.
2) The Bicheno Townscape Manual which was produced in collaboration with the community and local councils to provide guidance on the town's character.
3) The St Helens Townscape Plan which addressed the community's vision for the future of the town as both a tourism destination and seaside community.
4) The North Hobart Townscape Project which engaged designers and artists to establish an ongoing development program for Central North Hobart.

Project name: Place a stone in a river
The document discusses a project aimed at establishing libraries as independent arenas for public debate to engage with local communities. The project's main goals are to 1) have county libraries in three regions arrange debates on locally relevant topics to promote discussion, and 2) provide training to help library staff organize such events. It provides an example of a library that successfully held a debate on the hot topic of how to use a new church building. The evaluation stresses the importance of recruiting knowledgeable speakers, finding the right balance and chemistry among participants, and providing good direction to get the best out of events.
The Exeter Cultural Partnership represents the city’s cultural organisations including libraries, museums, sport, arts, health, education, food and retail - organisations which touch the lives of thousands of people each year. ECP now has over 150 members across the city and sub region.
Our mission as a partnership is to contribute to a city where a vibrant cultural life enriches the experience of everyone living in, working in and visiting Exeter.
For the past nine months ECP has been working towards the creation of a Cultural Action Plan for Exeter. With the support of Exeter City Council and the Arts Council of England, ECP has undertaken in depth consultation with the city’s cultural sector producing key findings that have informed this Action Plan.
Importantly this Action Plan is one that is ‘co-owned’ with the City Council, ensuring that culture is embedded in the plans that will shape the city of the future. Named as one of the top five priorities in the City Council’s five year strategic plan, culture is seen as a key contributor to future prosperity and growth in Exeter.
The National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA) was formed in 2009 in Ireland to advocate for government funding of the arts during an economic crisis. The NCFA mobilized artists, arts organizations, and the public through online petitions, meetings with politicians, and demonstrations. As a result, proposed budget cuts to arts funding were reduced. The NCFA continued campaigning in subsequent years through meetings with newly elected politicians, online advocacy, and public events. Their goals were to maintain funding for the arts and increase understanding of the value of the arts.
This project brought together Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities in London to create a living archive of their history through various media. 84 people participated in filmmaking, audio recording, exhibition creation, and other activities. The project helped strengthen community participation and cultural preservation. It produced films, audio stories, a book, and exhibition. While engagement was intermittent, the project provided learning opportunities and helped raise awareness of the communities' histories. Barriers included low literacy levels and personal hardships, but the project fostered new partnerships and supported community initiatives.
Public Participation in transboundary issues in the Republic of Moldova (Ilya...Iwl Pcu
The document discusses public participation in transboundary water management in Moldova. It notes that while Moldova has signed international agreements supporting public participation, national legislation does not specifically address transboundary waters. Non-governmental organizations play an active role in environmental monitoring and management of the Dniester River. However, public participation in transboundary water management is still limited, and better procedures and legal frameworks are needed to strengthen stakeholders' involvement in the process. Key challenges include improving access to information, increasing public awareness, and adopting a river basin approach to management.
Webinar with presentation of the facilitation method applied in the municipal...Tove Holm
The Municipality of Korsholm organised a webinar on November 29th in 2022, where I presented the a methodology the municipality have used to involve different sectors in their sustainability work.
The facilitation methodology is called “the arrow for the future”,
It has been applied in the municipality of Korsholm in Finland for implementing their climate- and energy strategy.
In the workshop, the participants, together, identify:
1) what they have succeeded with during the last years/the former period?
2) what is topical right now? and
3) what do they want to do in the upcoming years?
The success factors of the methodology are first that you get to identify what you have succeeded with, meaning giving positive feedback to each other and yourself.
Secondly, everyone can participate regardless of position or title. Thirdly, you get a result, a list of things that the group would like to accomplish in the coming years.
This method is very suitable for any strategy work.

Tavoitteenamme on julkaista seuraava ohjelma, vuosille 2024-2028 Itämerihaasteen valtakunnallisessa seminaarissa Helsingissä syksyllä 2024.

Nopeat kokeilut aloitustilaisuus - teemana Saaristomeren kestävän lähiruuan k...Tove Holm
Turun kaupungin Itämerihaaste on valinnut toteutettavaksi neljä nopeaa kokeilua jotka edistävät Saaristomeren kestävää lähiruokaa. Kokeilut käynnistyvät lokakuussa 2022 ja päättyvät tammikuussa 2023.
Kokeiluissa tuotetaan käytännön ratkaisuja uusien raaka-aineiden tuotteistamista ja lähiruuan logistiikan kehittämistä varten sekä viestitään ratkaisuista. Kokeilut pyrkivät muutoksen vauhdittamiseen konkreettisilla toimilla osallistamalla tuottajia ja toimijoita.
Kokeilujen avoin aloitustilaisuus järjestettiin 14.10.2022, Spark Up:in tapahtuma-areenalla.
Tilaisuudessa kokeilijat kertoivat kokeiluistaan.
Kokeiluhaku on auki 24.8- 21.9.2022: Kokeilutoiminta Turussa -https://www.turku.fi/testbed-turku/kokeilutoiminta-Turussa.

Evolving Lifecycles with High Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) and 3-D...Joshua Orris
The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.
Improving the viability of probiotics by encapsulation methods for developmen...Open Access Research Paper
The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.
Kinetic studies on malachite green dye adsorption from aqueous solutions by A...Open Access Research Paper
Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...Joshua Orris
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

• Concern for the state of the Baltic Sea
• Healthy waters = competitiveness and
welfare of the cities
• The first joint action plan of the cities was
published in 2007
• jointly with the challenge campaign for
other organisations to do the same
3. • A network for concrete action at
local level for protecting the Baltic Sea

organisations
What is The Baltic Sea Challenge?
5. Our workfield:
1. 123 actions in the cities
of Helsinki and Turku
2. engaging citizens in
Turku and Helsinki
– like the Baltic Sea Day
3. nationally
4. internationally
6. Workshop for deeloping an
international tv show: say YES to the
Baltic Sea, February 16th, 2022
7. Why? The challenge?
• The Baltic Sea and the situation in the Baltic Sea do not
receive as much attention as we feel it should.
• As a general rule, all people and projects face the same
challenges for the same reason: political decision-
makers and officials are difficult to reach and do not find
it significant enough to be involved in the project other
than “mentally and supportively”.
• If, on the other hand, offered extensive media
visibility, perhaps the situation would be different?
8. Solution?
• What if we had a Baltic Sea-themed program with interesting topics?
• The right things, problems, and of course solutions with good performers to crystal clear?
• Briskly and freshly told. Honest, genuine, with the right energy, and timely. At the forefront
of the Baltic Sea state, fishing, nature, wildlife, and livelihoods.
• A story about a local fisherman, swimmer, friend of the sea and nature?
• Experts from each participating country would be invited to visit “cross-forum” events?
• Could it be that it would be of more interest to politicians and influencers if the Baltic Sea
project were on tv, visible on all channels in the participating countries? Could a program
buyer be interested in a Baltic Sea project with current international experts and
politicians with a good message for the beloved Baltic Sea?
• What if you don't need to change other than your own behavior and process and the
solution is at hand?
