involving different sectors in their
sustainability work

• During 2021-2022, the
municipality is working
with a climate leadership
project funded by the
Ministry of the
Environment.
• The main goals are that
the municipality will
develop
• functioning
structures,
• skills and models for
climate leadership,
and
• is seen as a role
model for its
climate work.
Climate- and energy
strategy of the
municipality of
Korsholm, published in
June 2021
• The strategy mainly
focuses on climate and
energy issues.
• However, the intention
is to expand the
perspective to enhance
all sustainability
aspects, meaning also
the economical and
social aspects, beyond
the environmental.

In practice
You need:
- A big room with tables that you combine to a
long table
• Big papers, in the color of your theme
• Scissor
• Tape
• Pens
• Post it notes
• Printed strategies/reports of the case you are
dealing with
• Coffee, drinks and snacks
• You start by taping together several big papers, to
an arrow that fits the room or tables you have.
• On that, you draw an arrow, which you split into
three parts: past, present, and future. Write:
• 1. What have we succeeded with so far
• 2. What is topical right now
• 3. Timetable, e.g. 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027,
2028, 2029, 2030
Timetable, two-four (including lunch) hours
• Intro, 15-30 minutes
• Task 1 (succeeded with so far), 30
minutes: 5 + 25
• say: each write one thing per post it
note, with clear handwriting, time 5
minutes. Bring them to the table, part
one. Each present one idea (or more)
• Task 2 (topical right now), 30-40
minutes: 5-7 + 23-33
good time for a break
• Task 3 (future actions), 30-50 minutes:
5-9 + 21-41
• If the final task on site (action program),
45- 60 minutes, 30 + 15- 30
• Ending
• Remember breaks

Why
like
this?
• everyone must be present, listen and participate, meaning no-one can work on their computer or phone
• you identify what you have succeeded with, meaning giving positive feedback to each other and yourself
• everyone shares what is topical right now; internal communication
• everyone participates as equals regardless of position or title
• when you imagine the future, you think more freely than when thinking about the coming years
• you get a result, a list of things that the group would like to accomplish the coming years,
why this method is very suitable for any strategy work

- the goal is that the participants participate, share and listed to each other
- timetable plan, that you modify during the workshop
- if 40 participants, say that they can give one example of what they have written, if six
participants, they can share all; follow the time
- shut up, meaning make sure that you don´t take time of the discussion with your own reflections
- on the other hand, it is very good if you have some know-how about the topic – answer to
possible questions, or give examples, if know one else does it – but ask the group first
- move around, show that it is okey to change places.
- make sure different people start at different times
- listen and summarize when needed; if bi-lingual, translate when needed
- summarize the result, organize the results logically in a document, share it

what everyone can do for the
environment in their everyday life.

results back to the residents. In
this way, we maintain
commitment and enthuse more
people to participate in
environmental work.

Webinar with presentation of the facilitation method applied in the municipality of Korsholm to involve different sectors in their sustainability work.

  • 1. The facilitation methodology “the arrow for the future”, which has been applied in the municipality of Korsholm in Finland for involving different sectors in their sustainability work November 29th, 2022 Tove Holm Facilitator for Sustainable Development

Climate- and energy strategy of the municipality of Korsholm, published in June 2021 • During 2021-2022, the municipality is working with a climate leadership project funded by the Ministry of the Environment. • The main goals are that the municipality will develop • functioning structures, • skills and models for climate leadership, and • is seen as a role model for its climate work.
  • 3. Climate- and energy strategy of the municipality of Korsholm, published in June 2021 • The strategy mainly focuses on climate and energy issues. • However, the intention is to expand the perspective to enhance all sustainability aspects, meaning also the economical and social aspects, beyond the environmental. 29 actions planned for: Energy supply Land use and construction Provision of Service Traffic and transport Knowledge, attitudes and behavior

The Baltic Sea & the Archipelago Sea Enhancing sustainable development and responsibility Continuous improvements Interdisciplinary, applied action research Communication, editing Facilitation and education for sustainable development Project management and applying for funding Change management, susstainable leadership
  • 5. The facilitation methodology “the arrow for the future” • Introduction • What have we succeeded with so far? • What is topical right now? Input • What do we want to achieve until (2030)? • What should be done, concretely, to get there? Process • Response to each other's thoughts, what is included, what is missing? • Who is responsible for what? • Task for the follow-up meeting / final task at the workshop Reflection Bi-lingual, Swedish/ Finnish

In practice You need: - A big room with tables that you combine to a long table • Big papers, in the color of your theme • Scissor • Tape • Pens • Post it notes • Printed strategies/reports of the case you are dealing with • Coffee, drinks and snacks • You start by taping together several big papers, to an arrow that fits the room or tables you have. • On that, you draw an arrow, which you split into three parts: past, present, and future. Write: • 1. What have we succeeded with so far • 2. What is topical right now • 3. Timetable, e.g. 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030
  • 7. Timetable, two-four (including lunch) hours • Intro, 15-30 minutes • Task 1 (succeeded with so far), 30 minutes: 5 + 25 • say: each write one thing per post it note, with clear handwriting, time 5 minutes. Bring them to the table, part one. Each present one idea (or more) • Task 2 (topical right now), 30-40 minutes: 5-7 + 23-33 good time for a break • Task 3 (future actions), 30-50 minutes: 5-9 + 21-41 • If the final task on site (action program), 45- 60 minutes, 30 + 15- 30 • Ending • Remember breaks Picture: Ulrica Taylor

Why like this? • everyone must be present, listen and participate, meaning no-one can work on their computer or phone • you identify what you have succeeded with, meaning giving positive feedback to each other and yourself • everyone shares what is topical right now; internal communication • everyone participates as equals regardless of position or title • when you imagine the future, you think more freely than when thinking about the coming years • you get a result, a list of things that the group would like to accomplish the coming years, why this method is very suitable for any strategy work

Facili- tators role Picture: Ulrica Taylor - the goal is that the participants participate, share and listed to each other - timetable plan, that you modify during the workshop - if 40 participants, say that they can give one example of what they have written, if six participants, they can share all; follow the time - shut up, meaning make sure that you don´t take time of the discussion with your own reflections - on the other hand, it is very good if you have some know-how about the topic – answer to possible questions, or give examples, if know one else does it – but ask the group first - move around, show that it is okey to change places. - make sure different people start at different times - listen and summarize when needed; if bi-lingual, translate when needed - summarize the result, organize the results logically in a document, share it

Climate- and energy strategy of the municipality of Korsholm, published in June 2021 • The municipality's climate and energy strategy aims to be concrete and take into account what everyone can do for the environment in their everyday life. • The municipality wants to engage the residents in environmental actions, measure their overall effect and communicate the results back to the residents. In this way, we maintain commitment and enthuse more people to participate in environmental work.
