1.1.1 Beginning your research
Student Book
   pp 14–23

Having discussed the different research methods that you may choose to employ when
working on your investigations into the scene in your region, you should move on to
drawing up plans to carry out your own research.

To begin with, choose one creative and media activity from the list below and answer the
questions about how you would go about investigating these activities in your region:

                      screening of films

 production of graphic design products

                      exhibition of artwork.

1 What research methods might you use to investigate these activities?

I think that for the screening of films, the most effective method of research would be to
actually go to a cinema or that type of environment that screens films and actually speak
to some of the people there. This is because it is primary information that you are
collecting and receiving directly which therefore is a reliable source. Alongside this
method, I think internet research may be useful. Looking on film websites will give extra
                     information that is needed.

2 What resources would you need to conduct this research?

I will need to have access to a computer and internet in order to conduct this research
and I’ll also need easy access to a local cinema. This could mean available public
transport which goes to that area.

3 Would you need to make any arrangements prior to conducting this research?

Arrangements will have to be made before being able to conduct my research. For
instance, I’ll have to contact the cinema before going there in order to set up an interview
with one of the workers there. If I don’t already have access to a computer with internet
then I may have to book a computer in a library or idea store.

4 What kinds of materials or information might you expect to find from conducting
                                  this research activity?

I would expect to find out how often a screening of a film takes place and the process
needed for this to happen. Also why some films make it to cinema’s whereas other do not.
I would also expect to find out how the film is promoted before the screening of it in order
                     to attract viewers.

Level 2 Higher Diploma Creative and MediaUnit 1: Scene
5 How would you store your findings from this research?

During the interviews and internet research I would take notes in a notepad which I can
then transfer into a folder and also on a computer database such as a blog so that I have
both a paper copy and a copy on the computer.
