Analysing in depth work manager
Deferrable Background work is extremely critical area for Android developers . With the onset of latest modifications in background processes/tasks in Oreo, Pie & even Q it has become very intricate & cumbersome dealing with background tasks within our app. Developers always struggle in choosing from different available alternatives like Alarm Manager, Firebase Job Dispatcher , Job Scheduler , GCM Network Manager which fall short in implementing background work in an effective manner .There was an absence of a clean & centralised solution for background processing which will work from Kitkat to the latest version of Android seamlessly.
In this talk, we will look into new Work Manager APIs introduced as new Android Architecture Components & part of Android Jetpack. We will understand where we should & should not use WorkManager. We will dive into the different mechanisms provided by WorkManager to monitor work via LiveData.
We will unravel how we constrain ,monitor and cancel work. Chained, Parallel, Periodic and Unique work will also be explained in detail with examples. Since the APIs are stable this will help us to analyse & use WorkManager effectively in our app for different situations.

Using hilt in a modularized project
Modularizing a project is never easy, a lot of files to move and the dependencies between them is not always what we expect. Then the Dagger configuration used in a single module project often doesn't scale well to a multi module project. Hilt is opinionated about the configuration to use (we don't need to argue anymore about using component dependencies or subcomponents!) and this configuration works perfectly even in a multi module project. In this talk we'll see first an introduction to Hilt and a comparison with Dagger to understand why it's easier to configure. Then we'll see how to leverage it in a multi module project (both in a standard layered architecture and in a Clean Architecture that uses the Dependency Inversion) to improve build speed and code testability. Spoiler alert: using sample apps that include a single feature in the app helps a lot!

Coroutines in Kotlin
Coroutines are Kotlin's solution for concurrency and allow doing something else while waiting for results. They avoid issues with threading like memory usage and bottlenecks. Coroutines use suspending functions to pause execution and switch to other coroutines. They can be cancelled, have timeouts set, and structured hierarchically with jobs. Common coroutine patterns include producers that return values on channels and actors that receive messages on inbound channels. Coroutines are backed by event loops and may require yield() if CPU bound to allow other coroutines to run.

Over the past few years, web-applications have started to play an increasingly important role in our lives. We expect them to be always available and the data to be always fresh. This shift into the realm of real-time data processing is now transitioning to physical devices, and Gartner predicts that the Internet of Things will grow to an installed base of 26 billion units by 2020.
As reactive architectures gain in popularity, more and more developers find themselves faced with the challenge of "thinking reactive". To leave behind the well-known concepts of mutable, object-oriented, imperative and synchronous programming in favour of immutable, functional, declarative and asynchronous programming requires quite a mind shift and it isn't obvious to take the plunge.
In this talk we will explore three concepts from the world of functional programming that are at the core of building reactive applications: immutability, higher-order functions and manipulating immutable collections. Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Measures in SQL (SIGMOD 2024, Santiago, Chile)
SQL has attained widespread adoption, but Business Intelligence tools still use their own higher level languages based upon a multidimensional paradigm. Composable calculations are what is missing from SQL, and we propose a new kind of column, called a measure, that attaches a calculation to a table. Like regular tables, tables with measures are composable and closed when used in queries.
SQL-with-measures has the power, conciseness and reusability of multidimensional languages but retains SQL semantics. Measure invocations can be expanded in place to simple, clear SQL.
To define the evaluation semantics for measures, we introduce context-sensitive expressions (a way to evaluate multidimensional expressions that is consistent with existing SQL semantics), a concept called evaluation context, and several operations for setting and modifying the evaluation context.
