Plotting Paths Through Digital MinefieldsDom Pates
These were the slides that accompanied a workshop/talk I gave for City, University of London's Library and Information Science Masters students, as part of their 'After Hours' series. The session looked at some of the ethical choices we face in the information society, and my particular journey towards a more critical lens on that society.
Civic innovation network (CIN) is a Brussels-based lab to foster unforeseen collaborations that can tackle the systemic challenges of the city by connecting people, projects and communities. We believe in an open and collaborative society, where creating together and collective intelligence holds an answer to the systemic challenges of our city.

Keynote talk at the Web Science Summer School, Singapore, 8 December 2014. Today we see the rise of Social Machines, like Twitter, Wikipedia and Galaxy Zoo—where communities identify and solve their own problems, harnessing commitment, local knowledge and embedded skills, without having to rely on experts or governments.
The Social Machines paradigm provides a lens onto the interacting sociotechnical systems of our hybrid digital-physical world, citizen-centric and at scale—emphasising empowerment and sociality in a world of pervasive technology adoption and automation.
This talk will present the Social Machines paradigm as an approach to social media analytics and a rethinking of our scholarly practices and knowledge infrastructure.

Internet of things and the metamorphosis of objects - rick bouter , gérald ...Rick Bouter
Where in prior times technique was referring to: “a method of accomplishing a desired aim”,
today we speak more of technology. Technology has long been presented as a set of
techniques; today it has become more than a method to accomplish a desired aim. From now
on, we live in ‘the age of makers’. In times when there are more people with mobile phone
access than toothbrushes, everyone has the ability to start up a million euro business from
behind the kitchen table.
Technology does not only affect business any longer; it also affects culture, politics, society
and every element we value in life. Maybe most important of all, it affects the human race as
we know it today. For the reason technology will impact the way we have lived for ages, it is
legitimate to ask whether there is an intersection where humans and objects will find a
mutually beneficial coexistence, or whether one of these entities will rule over the other, or
whether there will be an alliance between the human race and some sort of technology that
represents a global connected world brain.
Will technology be, like in prior times, a collection of methods to accomplishing a desired
aim, or will the human race be enslaved by technology and ruled by the artificial intelligence
embedded in it?
The information network created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 to connect people to knowledge has become an important place to navigate who and what we know, as well as who we think we are. But how much of a revolution is it? This lecture will trace some of the most important developments in social uses of information technologies in order to ultimately argue that the Web does offer unprecedented opportunities to access information and galvanise communities of practice, but that the impact of this new medium will reflect an evolution rather than a revolution of communication practices.

New forms of data for the social sciences: Smarter cities, more efficient organisations, and healthier communities. Wednesday 3rd November 2015, UCL, London, United Kingdom
Seminar at CSAIL, MIT, Cambridge, Mass. Date: Friday October 30, 2015. Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Location: D463 (Star)
Abstract:
Today we are witnessing several shifts in scholarly practice, in and across multiple disciplines, as researchers embrace digital techniques to tackle established research questions in new ways and new questions afforded by digital and digitized collections, approaches, and technologies. Pervasive adoption of technology, coupled with the co-creation of new social processes, has created a new and complex space for scholarship where citizens both generate and analyse data as they interact at the intersection of the physical and digital. Drawing on a background in distributed computing, and adopting the lens of Social Machines, this talk discusses current activity in digital scholarship, framing it in its interdisciplinary settings.

Improving Workplace Safety Performance in Malaysian SMEs: The Role of Safety ...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: In the Malaysian context, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) experience a significant
burden of workplace accidents. A consensus among scholars attributes a substantial portion of these incidents to
human factors, particularly unsafe behaviors. This study, conducted in Malaysia's northern region, specifically
targeted Safety and Health/Human Resource professionals within the manufacturing sector of SMEs. We
gathered a robust dataset comprising 107 responses through a meticulously designed self-administered
questionnaire. Employing advanced partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) techniques
with SmartPLS 3.2.9, we rigorously analyzed the data to scrutinize the intricate relationship between safety
behavior and safety performance. The research findings unequivocally underscore the palpable and
consequential impact of safety behavior variables, namely safety compliance and safety participation, on
improving safety performance indicators such as accidents, injuries, and property damages. These results
strongly validate research hypotheses. Consequently, this study highlights the pivotal significance of cultivating
safety behavior among employees, particularly in resource-constrained SME settings, as an essential step toward
enhancing workplace safety performance.

ABSTRACT: Although a significant amount of literature exists on Morocco's migration policies and their
successes and failures since their implementation in 2014, there is limited research on the integration of subSaharan African children into schools. This paperis part of a Ph.D. research project that aims to fill this gap. It
reports the main findings of a study conducted with migrant children enrolled in two public schools in Rabat,
Morocco, exploring how integration is defined by the children themselves and identifying the obstacles that they
have encountered thus far. The following paper uses an inductive approach and primarily focuses on the
relationships of children with their teachers and peers as a key aspect of integration for students with a migration
background. The study has led to several crucial findings. It emphasizes the significance of speaking Colloquial
Moroccan Arabic (Darija) and being part of a community for effective integration. Moreover, it reveals that the
use of Modern Standard Arabic as the language of instruction in schools is a source of frustration for students,
indicating the need for language policy reform. The study underlines the importanceof considering the
children‟s agency when being integrated into mainstream public schools.

2. Real life is and must be full of all kinds of social
constraint – the very processes from which society
arises. Computers can help if we use them to
create abstract social machines on the Web:
processes in which the people do the creative work
and the machine does the administration... The
stage is set for an evolutionary growth of new
social engines. The ability to create new forms of
social process would be given to the world at large,
and development would be rapid.

10. “Yet Wikipedia and its stated ambition to “compile the sum of all
human knowledge” are in trouble. The volunteer workforce that
built the project’s flagship, the English-language Wikipedia—and
must defend it against vandalism, hoaxes, and manipulation—
has shrunk by more than a third since 2007 and is still shrinking…
The main source of those problems is not mysterious. The loose
collective running the site today, estimated to be 90 percent
male, operates a crushing bureaucracy with an often abrasive
atmosphere that deters newcomers who might increase
participation in Wikipedia and broaden its coverage…”

Chinese compilation of
information commissioned
by the Ming Dynasty
emperor Yongle in 1403
and completed by 1408. It
was the world's largest

encyclopedia at its time,
unsurpassed for six
centuries.

The scholars incorporated 8,000

16. Why adopt a storytelling perspective to study
Social Machines? This idea is rooted in the
observation that much attention has been
given to the internal functioning of a Social
Machine, thereby tipping the balance towards
the “machinery” side of Social Machines; the
question that remains wide open and
relatively unexplored is the following: what is
social about a Social Machine? By adopting a
storytelling view on Social Machines, we
facilitate the exposition and expression of
their sociality.
18. Rather than looking at a Social Machine
as an entity where the “machinery” is a
set structure of hardware, software, and
assigned roles that would somehow allow
for sociality (how?), we consider the
“machinery” as plotpoints through which
stories can pass, allowing for non-
deterministic communication, for non-
combinatorial circulation of ideas, for
non-preset cooperation, for innovation,
for invention, and thereby for sociality.
19. STORYTELLING AS A STETHOSCOPE
FOR SOCIAL MACHINES
1. Sociality through storytelling potential
and realization
2. Sustainability through reactivity and
interactivity
3. Emergence through collaborative
authorship and mixed authority
