Editor's Notes

  1. Technology: we saw a gap between the potential of smart devices especially phones for language learning, but this not sufficiently realised by others… Team: Three of team have many years’ experience in ELTT, 4th team member – elearning generally in UK at Imperial and large corps (DHL, Disney) – global solutions for training environments; also programming experience and design – Cost: Relatively lo-cost enabled us to self-fun the development of the app; bootstrapping approach = keeping costs as low as possible; common approach in small start-ups; we haven’t yet looked for external funding of any kindAim: Spot an area of pain, and then come up with a solution for the pain; where’s the pain in language learning – remembering new words. We based our app on a Flash based routine we had seen do really well in China.
  2. Interactive exp: we deliver a chunk which can last from 2 – 10 minutes; on the move…Appeal: We planned for app to appeal to YLs and adults (a challenge?) but exp suggests that adults enjoy games as much as YLs (in2english) – office workers on in2english shooting balloons to spell words – across the boardGame aspect: Learning langs thru playing games isn’t as exploited as could be and we wanted to gain expertise in this area, and so we wanted to develop game aspect (not many lang learning apps are based on games). This is just a learning exp – will it be effective? Will it be sticky?Scope: don’t try to do too much – it’s only to remember vocab – we constantly had to keep ourselves in check…
