Porter Marley, a 2015 graduate of Rigby High School in Idaho, signed to play baseball for Miles Community College for the 2015-2016 season. While in high school, Marley was an honor roll student and played baseball, where he was named an honorable mention first baseman his senior year. Marley plans to study computer business at MCC. The MCC baseball coach praised Marley's character and abilities and believes he will be a difference maker for the team.
The MCC baseball program also announced a coaching change, hiring former MCC player Alfonso Sanchez as an assistant coach and sports information director, replacing Dan McKinney who resigned. Sanchez recently coached various youth baseball teams in the area. The head coach believes Sanchez's experience as
Self-control relies on glucose as a limited energy source. When we engage in acts of self-control, our glucose levels are depleted, making it difficult to exert self-control again until more glucose is consumed. Glucose is the primary fuel for the brain and its executive functions that require control and effort. Low glucose levels impair these controlled processes. Additionally, small acts of self-control are enough to deplete remaining glucose, impairing further control until more fuel is consumed. The strength model of self-control compares it to a muscle that gets tired with use over time. Like a muscle, self-control can be improved with practice but becomes vulnerable after exertion until "resting".
PSYCH POLICIES AND PROCEDURES MANUEL- RUSS LORDDan McKinney
1. The document provides an introduction to sport psychology concepts for a college baseball team. It includes definitions and explanations of topics like attention, leadership, motivation, and cognitive dissonance.
2. The coaching staff developed the manual to help players understand mental skills that can enhance performance, both on and off the field. While there is no exam, the coaches expect players to understand how the concepts apply.
3. The manual covers various sport psychology principles and gives examples of how they relate to baseball. The goal is for players to take one thing from the manual and build upon their mental approach.
The athletic director wrote a letter to the school board arguing against eliminating the high school sports program. He cited evidence that 95% of athletes graduate compared to 70% of students overall. The letter also discussed the mental, physical, and social benefits of sports for students such as improved mood, self-esteem, problem-solving skills, and decreased obesity rates. Eliminating sports would negatively impact a large percentage of students and their future success.
The document discusses concerns raised by coaches at Montana State University Billings regarding their athletic programs. The coaches met with the new athletic director to discuss issues with lack of productivity in practices, lack of self-control among players, and players having inflated self-perceptions. The athletic director provides suggestions to address these issues, including implementing deliberate practice in training to improve focus, establishing self-control through proper nutrition, and helping players develop more accurate self-perceptions through recognition of cognitive dissonance experienced when comparing abilities to others. The overall goal is to help the programs improve performance both on and off the field.
Policies and Procedures Manual- HHP 570 Jay ShawDan McKinney
The document provides an overview of policies and procedures for the Corvallis High School athletic department for the upcoming school year. It discusses new facilities like the gymnasium and natatorium, as well as new coaches and transportation contracts. The purpose is to ensure all coaches and staff understand expectations and responsibilities. Coaches' compensation is outlined based on sport and duties. Requirements for coaches include a bachelor's degree, experience, certifications, and adherence to conduct policies. Seasonal restrictions on practices and competitions are also established.
This document is a thesis submitted by Dan McKinney to Montana State University - Billings examining the effects of the Right View Pro video analysis system on bat velocity and batted-ball exit velocity in college baseball players. The study divided 29 players into 3 groups - one that did weight training only, one that did weight training and video analysis, and one that did weight training, video analysis, and Right View Pro analysis. Bat velocity was measured using a Pocket Radar and exit velocity was measured using a Stalker Radar Sport 2 Radar Gun. The analysis found no significant difference in bat velocity between the groups but did find a significant difference in exit velocity between the group that did weight training only and the group that did weight training
The document discusses the difference in exit velocity between baseballs hit off bats certified by the BBCOR and BESR standards. It notes that the BBCOR standard was implemented in 2011 to reduce exit velocities for safety reasons and to make the game more similar to wood bats. An experiment is described that measured the exit velocity of baseballs hit off each type of bat by college players, finding a statistically significant difference and higher exit velocities from BESR bats, rejecting the null hypothesis. Limitations of the study are discussed.
This document discusses how self-control relies on glucose as a limited energy source. It presents evidence that acts of self-control deplete blood glucose levels, and that low glucose after an initial self-control task impairs performance on subsequent tasks. The findings support a strength model of self-control, where willpower draws on a limited resource that is vulnerable to depletion with exertion, similar to how muscles tire. Maintaining adequate glucose levels through diet and rest may help strengthen self-control abilities over time.
This study examined the impact of baseball bat handle flexibility on exit velocity. Three bats with varying handle flexibilities (65, 90, 100) were tested by having 8 baseball players hit balls off a tee with each bat. The exit velocity of each ball was measured. The results found no statistically significant difference in exit velocity between the bats, indicating that handle flexibility does not impact ball speed according to this study. This failed to support marketing claims that more flexible handles improve performance.
The document discusses the "cocktail party effect", which is our ability to focus attention on a single conversation among other noises. It describes early research by Colin Cherry in the 1950s studying how air traffic controllers distinguish pilot communications. The key challenges are sound separation and directing attention. Later studies showed little semantic information is obtained from unattended messages due to early filtering in the brain. While our understanding of these auditory processes is still limited, factors like expectations and divided attention can contribute to failures in sound separation known as "inattentional blindness."
College athletes generate billions of dollars for the NCAA, universities, and television networks through basketball and football. However, athletes themselves receive only scholarships that often do not fully cover their costs of attendance, and they are restricted from other employment opportunities. This has led some to argue that the current system amounts to using athletes as unpaid labor. While scholarships were originally consistent with universities' educational missions, many now see big-time college football and basketball as entertainment industries. There is an ongoing debate about whether college athletes should be permitted to earn additional money from their sports participation.
This study examined the effects of a visual hitting system called Right View Pro (RVP) on bat velocity and batted-ball exit velocity in collegiate baseball players. 29 players were divided into 3 groups: weight training only, weight training with video analysis, weight training with video analysis and RVP analysis. Bat velocity and exit velocity were measured before and after. The results showed no significant differences in bat velocity or exit velocity between the groups. While RVP did not directly increase speed, the study concluded it may still provide indirect benefits to a hitter's mechanics. Further research is recommended using wood bats and examining RVP in conjunction with proven batting techniques.

Prior to her stint at MSU-Northern, Lewis served on the staffs of Central Washington University
and her alma mater, Rocky Mountain College.
