This document discusses several key areas related to women and epilepsy, including the effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on appearance, the relationship between female hormones and seizure control, fertility, contraception, and pregnancy considerations. Specifically, it notes that certain AEDs can cause hirsutism, weight changes, and menstrual irregularities. It also discusses how estrogen and progesterone levels impact seizure frequency and the risk of birth defects associated with taking AEDs during pregnancy. The document recommends consultation with a neurologist or obstetrics specialist before and during pregnancy.

Medication in pregnancy by dr alka mukherjee nagpur m.s. indiaalka mukherjee
Pregnancy is a unique period in a woman’s life. Many changes are happening to her body that may affect the pharmacology of medications. During pregnancy, a woman’s gastric pH is increased and gastric motility is reduced which may interfere with the rate and extent of medication absorption. Maternal plasma volume is increased leading to changes in the volume of distribution. In addition, increases in progesterone and estradiol levels may affect the hepatic metabolism of some medications. Glomerular filtration rate is increased due to increase renal blood flow which may affect renally cleared medications. Despite the changes, the pharmacology of most medications is not altered enough to require dosing changes.1 The placenta is an organ of exchange allowing the mother to pass nutrients and medications to the fetus; therefore, medications administered to pregnant women have the potential to affect the growing fetus. The fetus is generally at the greatest risk of developing teratogenic effects from medications during the first trimester, but it is drug specific. The use of medications in pregnancy should be evaluated for the benefits and risks to both the mother and fetus. Upon evaluation, some medications may be used sparingly during some trimesters and contraindicated in others. 2 All efforts should be made to optimize the risk benefit ratio. Drugs with low molecular weight, low maternal protein binding, low ionization, and high lipophilicity are more likely to cross the placenta and cause pharmacologic affects.1 The developing fetus’s body systems are not mature; therefore, the fetus may lack the ability to metabolize medications causing teratogenic effects. 2 The FDA has categorized the potential teratogenic risk of medications by an A, B, C, D, X system.

Therapeutic startegies for human papillomavirus infection and associated cancersAdeniyiAkiseku
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is linked to development of cancer of cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, ano-genital and non-genital oro-pharyngeal sites. HPV being a sexually transmitted virus infects both genders equally but with higher chances of pathological outcome in women. In the absence of organized screening programs, women report HPV-infected lesions at relatively advanced stages where they are subjected to standard treatments that are not HPV-specific. HPV infection-driven lesions usually take 10–20 years for malignant progression and are preceded by well-characterized pre-cancer stages. Despite availability of window for pharmacological intervention, therapeutic that could eradicate HPV from infected lesions is currently lacking. A variety of experimental approaches have been made to address this lacuna and there has been significant progress in a number of lead molecules which are in different stages of clinical and pre-clinical development. Present review provides a brief overview of the magnitude of the problem and current status of research on promising lead molecules, formulations and therapeutic strategies that showed potential to translate to clinically-viable HPV therapeutics to counteract this reproductive health challenge

CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary gene-editing tool, holds immense potential to reshape medicine, agriculture, and our understanding of life. But like any powerful tool, it comes with ethical considerations.
Unveiling CRISPR: This naturally occurring bacterial defense system (crRNA & Cas9 protein) fights viruses. Scientists repurposed it for precise gene editing (correction, deletion, insertion) by targeting specific DNA sequences.
The Promise: CRISPR offers exciting possibilities:
Gene Therapy: Correcting genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis.
Agriculture: Engineering crops resistant to pests and harsh environments.
Research: Studying gene function to unlock new knowledge.
The Peril: Ethical concerns demand attention:
Off-target Effects: Unintended DNA edits can have unforeseen consequences.
Eugenics: Misusing CRISPR for designer babies raises social and ethical questions.
Equity: High costs could limit access to this potentially life-saving technology.
The Path Forward: Responsible development is crucial:
International Collaboration: Clear guidelines are needed for research and human trials.
Public Education: Open discussions ensure informed decisions about CRISPR.
Prioritize Safety and Ethics: Safety and ethical principles must be paramount.
CRISPR offers a powerful tool for a better future, but responsible development and addressing ethical concerns are essential. By prioritizing safety, fostering open dialogue, and ensuring equitable access, we can harness CRISPR's power for the benefit of all. (2998 characters)
Medical Technology Tackles New Health Care Demand - Research Report - March 2...pchutichetpong
M Capital Group (“MCG”) predicts that with, against, despite, and even without the global pandemic, the medical technology (MedTech) industry shows signs of continuous healthy growth, driven by smaller, faster, and cheaper devices, growing demand for home-based applications, technological innovation, strategic acquisitions, investments, and SPAC listings. MCG predicts that this should reflects itself in annual growth of over 6%, well beyond 2028.
According to Chris Mouchabhani, Managing Partner at M Capital Group, “Despite all economic scenarios that one may consider, beyond overall economic shocks, medical technology should remain one of the most promising and robust sectors over the short to medium term and well beyond 2028.”
There is a movement towards home-based care for the elderly, next generation scanning and MRI devices, wearable technology, artificial intelligence incorporation, and online connectivity. Experts also see a focus on predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision medicine, with rising levels of integration of home care and technological innovation.
The average cost of treatment has been rising across the board, creating additional financial burdens to governments, healthcare providers and insurance companies. According to MCG, cost-per-inpatient-stay in the United States alone rose on average annually by over 13% between 2014 to 2021, leading MedTech to focus research efforts on optimized medical equipment at lower price points, whilst emphasizing portability and ease of use. Namely, 46% of the 1,008 medical technology companies in the 2021 MedTech Innovator (“MTI”) database are focusing on prevention, wellness, detection, or diagnosis, signaling a clear push for preventive care to also tackle costs.
In addition, there has also been a lasting impact on consumer and medical demand for home care, supported by the pandemic. Lockdowns, closure of care facilities, and healthcare systems subjected to capacity pressure, accelerated demand away from traditional inpatient care. Now, outpatient care solutions are driving industry production, with nearly 70% of recent diagnostics start-up companies producing products in areas such as ambulatory clinics, at-home care, and self-administered diagnostics.

Women and Epilepsy
1. Women and Epilepsy
The main areas to consider are:
AEDs and appearance
Female hormones and seizure control
Fertility
Contraception
Pregnancy
Phenytoin therapy in childhood can cause hirsutism, gingival hyperplasia and coarsen of facial features. Sodium
valproate can cause hair loss, acne and hirsutism. Sodium valproate can also stimulate appetite leading to
obesity, as can vigabatrin, gabapentin and pregabalin.
Conversely, topiramate can cause significant weight loss
Experimental evidence from animal studies suggests that the change in seizure frequency during the menstrual
cycle may be related to the relative oestrogen and progesterone concentrations, with oestrogens being
considered to have pro-convulsant and progestogens anticonvulsant properties, respectively.
A reasonable treatment option in women who develop PCOS and/or ovulatory dysfunction while taking valproate
is to consider discontinuation of the drug and treatment with an alternative AED, if possible.

2. The AEDs phenobarbital, primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, topiramate and eslicarbazepine acetate are
inducers of the hepatic P450 microsomal isoenzyme CYP3A4 which is responsible for the metabolism of
oestrogens and progestogens. This results in increased metabolism of the combined oral contraceptive pill and
can lead to failure of OCP.
Obstetric/neurology pre-conceptual counselling service should be available to allow rapid assessment of women
actively contemplating pregnancy and to coordinate care during pregnancy. The risk of major congenital
malformations is at least doubled (4-9%) in women receiving AEDs, compared with the general population (2-3%)
must be discussed.
The prescription of folic acid before conception and at least until the end of the first trimester is recommended in
patients taking antiepileptic medication, as it is for all women. It causes an increased risk of neural tube defect in
children born to mothers taking AEDs, in particular, sodium valproate and carbamazepine.
