Cervical cancer develops in a woman's cervix. It is usually caused by HPV infection and can be prevented through regular Pap screening tests and HPV vaccination. Early stage cervical cancer may not have symptoms but advanced cases may cause abnormal bleeding. Diagnosis involves examination and testing to determine stage. Treatment options depend on stage but may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Regular screening is important for prevention.
The document proposes a project to screen and control breast and cervical cancer in Rajshahi District. The project aims to educate and motivate women aged 40-64 to undergo breast cancer screening via mammography and women aged 21-64 to undergo cervical cancer screening via visual inspection with acetic acid. It will establish temporary screening camps in 11 upazilas to conduct screening tests and refer positive cases for treatment. The 6-month project aims to screen 342 women and will be evaluated to assess its effectiveness and make improvements. An estimated budget of 15 lakh BDT is proposed to cover direct and indirect costs.
The document discusses breast examination techniques and evaluation of breast masses. It describes how to perform a breast exam and evaluate for changes. Common benign breast conditions like fibrocystic changes and risk factors for breast cancer are outlined. The document recommends that any suspicious breast mass initially undergo mammography or ultrasound and be biopsied, as physical exam alone cannot reliably determine if a mass is benign or malignant.
Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives. Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include:
Age - the chance of getting breast cancer rises, as a woman gets older
Genes - there are two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, which greatly increase the risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may wish to be tested.
Personal factors - beginning periods before age 12 or going through menopause after age 55
Other risks include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy (also called menopausal hormone therapy), taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having your first child after age 35 or having dense breasts.
Symptoms of breast cancer may include a lump in the breast, a change in size or shape of the breast or discharge from a nipple. Breast self-exam and mammography can help find breast cancer early when it is most treatable. Treatment may consist of radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
Men can have breast cancer, too, but the number of cases is small.
The document provides recommendations for investigating breast complaints and diagnosing breast diseases and cancer in British Columbia. Key recommendations include screening for breast cancer as per BC Cancer Agency guidelines, taking a full family history to assess genetic risk and referring to the Hereditary Cancer Program when appropriate, using core biopsy as the standard to establish a histological diagnosis, and using diagnostic ultrasound as the initial investigation for women under 30 or who are pregnant/lactating with breast symptoms, and using mammogram and ultrasound as initial tests for women 30 and over. Differential diagnoses of common breast diseases are also listed.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide. There are two main types: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer accounts for about 80% of cases and includes adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinomas. Risk factors include smoking, radon exposure, and air pollution. Symptoms often do not appear until later stages and include coughing, shortness of breath, and weight loss. Diagnosis involves imaging tests and biopsy. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Nursing care focuses on airway management, pain management, education, and preventing complications.
Cervical cancer arises from infection of the cervix by HPV. Risk factors include early sexual activity, multiple partners, and smoking. Screening through pap smears can detect pre-cancerous lesions and reduce mortality. Early stage disease is typically treated with surgery or radiation, while advanced disease receives chemoradiation. Surgery options include radical hysterectomy while radiation aims to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be added for recurrent or late stage disease.
This document provides an overview of cancer control and prevention. It discusses that 30-50% of cancers are preventable through primary prevention methods like controlling tobacco and alcohol consumption, promoting hygiene, limiting radiation exposure, and vaccinations. Secondary prevention methods include cancer screening and early detection/treatment of precancerous lesions. The National Cancer Control Programme was launched in India in 1976 with goals of prevention, early detection, and treatment. It discusses various screening methods and the evolution of India's cancer control efforts over time.

This document provides information about a paper assignment on human papillomavirus (HPV) for a bioscience course. The assignment requires students to research HPV using sources approved by the instructor. They must write a 2-page paper discussing HPV's morphology, virulence factors, effects on host cells, interactions with the immune system, caused diseases, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Epidemiological statistics and new research findings on HPV should also be discussed.
What is cancer of cervix and how it occurs?
Cancer of the cervix, also the mouth of uterus or the lower most part of womb (where baby grows), Is easily accessible for examination by the gynecologist per vaginal examination. Cancer of cervix is probably caused by high risk strains of the human papilloma-virus (16,18,31,45 etc), a common sexually transmitted infection. In more than 90 percent of the infections, HPV clears up on its own, but in 10 percent of cases either cancer or genital warts develops. Multiple sex partners increases risk of HPV infection and the more partners the current partner has had, the higher is the risk that he will transmit HPV. Sexual and reproductive factors, socio-economic factors (education and income), viruses e.g., herpes simplex virus (HSV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other factors like smoking, diet, oral contraceptives are other important high risk cofactors in cervical carcinogenesis. Early age of marriage and early child bearing are contributing factor in our country.
The HPV virus causes cervix cancer was established by the research work of Nobel laureate Professor Herald Har Hassen, and this led to development of a vaccine for it . The HPV vaccine can prevent 70 percent of cancer cervix and current guildlines recommend immunization all girls is adolescent age groups i.e. before sexual exposure with 3 doses of HPV vaccine. During cancer development, the HPV viral particles get integrated with DNA of human nucleus resulting in mutation and rapid cancerous proliferation. This process cervical takes a few decades, for precancerous or cancerous changes to occur in cells.
What are the aims of cervical cancer screening and the available methods for it?
Screening aims are to detect cancer cervix the precancerous or early stages , when it is treatable. The Pap smear is the most widely available and effective method for this. Efforts are going on to develop an alternative cost effective method to suite low resource setting, to cater the vast population of developing poor countries. For this VILI /VIA/Low cost HPV DNA testing are being investigated in various research trials.
What is Pap smear? For a PAP smear of vaginal secretions and spreading on slide which is then ….. in the pathology laboratory and examined under the microscope by a trained pathologist to detect precancerous changes in the cells. It is well recognized , that widespread use of Pap smear can reduce cancer rate by more than 50 percent sd precancerous lesions are picked up and treated .

Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that is increasing in incidence and mortality rates in Australia. It is the fourth most common cancer in the country and the third most common cancer among men and women aged 15-44. Screening programs for melanoma are important because early detection through regular skin exams can lead to nearly 100% survival if the cancer is caught before it spreads. Such programs should follow WHO criteria including addressing an important health problem, having agreed treatment options, and ensuring screening is an ongoing and continuous process.

The Ultimate Guide in Setting Up Market Research System in Health-TechGokul Rangarajan
How to effectively start market research in the health tech industry by defining objectives, crafting problem statements, selecting methods, identifying data collection sources, and setting clear timelines. This guide covers all the preliminary steps needed to lay a strong foundation for your research.
"Market Research it too text-booky, I am in the market for a decade, I am living research book" this is what the founder I met on the event claimed, few of my colleagues rolled their eyes. Its true that one cannot over look the real life experience, but one cannot out beat structured gold mine of market research.
Many 0 to 1 startup founders often overlook market research, but this critical step can make or break a venture, especially in health tech.
But Why do they skip it?
Limited resources—time, money, and manpower—are common culprits.
"In fact, a survey by CB Insights found that 42% of startups fail due to no market need, which is like building a spaceship to Mars only to realise you forgot the fuel."
Sudharsan Srinivasan
Operational Partner Pitchworks VC Studio
Overconfidence in their product’s success leads founders to assume it will naturally find its market, especially in health tech where patient needs, entire system issues and regulatory requirements are as complex as trying to perform brain surgery with a butter knife. Additionally, the pressure to launch quickly and the belief in their own intuition further contribute to this oversight. Yet, thorough market research in health tech could be the key to transforming a startup's vision into a life-saving reality, instead of a medical mishap waiting to happen.
Example of Market Research working
Innovaccer, founded by Abhinav Shashank in 2014, focuses on improving healthcare delivery through data-driven insights and interoperability solutions. Before launching their platform, Innovaccer conducted extensive market research to understand the challenges faced by healthcare organizations and the potential for innovation in healthcare IT.
Identifying Pain Points: Innovaccer surveyed healthcare providers to understand their difficulties with data integration, care coordination, and patient engagement. They found widespread frustration with siloed systems and inefficient workflows.
Competitive Analysis: Analyzed competitors offering similar solutions in healthcare analytics and interoperability. Identified gaps in comprehensive data aggregation, real-time analytics, and actionable insights.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensured their platform complied with HIPAA and other healthcare data privacy regulations. This compliance was crucial to gaining trust from healthcare providers wary of data security issues.
Customer Validation: Conducted pilot programs with several healthcare organizations to validate the platform's effectiveness in improving care outcomes and operational efficiency. Gathered feedback to refine features and user interface.

BREAST CANCER: FROM DETECTION TO TREATMENT
1. BREAST CANCER: FROM DETECTION
TO TREATMENT
1. What are the symptoms of breast cancer and how can it be detected early?
Any of the following breast cancer (https:/
/www.manipalhospitals.com/specialities/cancer-care/) symptoms may
be an indicator:
Lump in breast or armpit that grows with time and is usually painless
Bloody or straw coloured nipple discharge
Recent inversion, ulceration or destruction of nipple

2. Certain approaches can help in early detection (https:/
/healthcheckup.manipalhospitals.com/) - Breast self-
examination every month around five days after the periods are over (or a certain day of every month for
postmenopausal women) starting at the age of 20; Annual breast examination by a trained doctor after the age of
20; and Regular mammogram after the age of 45.
2. How to diagnose breast cancer and its extent (staging)?
Diagnosis is usually confirmed by a needle biopsy, which can be performed at the OPD in 10-15 minutes after the
mammogram is done. Sometimes MRI and ultrasound may also be needed. Patients with larger lumps, those
having enlarged glands in the armpit or symptoms suggestive of distant organ involvement (bone pain,
breathlessness, headache, enlarged liver etc) need additional tests to rule out the spread of disease to other
organs.
3. How are the various stages of breast cancer treated?
There are four stages of breast cancer.
Stage I & II (Early cancer) – Usually treated by surgery (https:/
/www.manipalhospitals.com/specialities/cancer-
care/) first. A requirement of additional treatment is decided after the final biopsy results are obtained.
Stage III (Locally advanced) – Usually requires chemotherapy first followed by surgery and radiation. Hormone
and other targeted therapy are needed in the select group of patients who have certain markers present on their
tumours.
Stage IV (Distant organ spread)– Usually treated either with chemotherapy or hormone therapy or both.
Symptom directed therapies like surgery for an ulcerated mass in the breast, radiation for pain relief / bony
disease, pain medicines, fluid removal etc. are required in some situations.
4. What are the different types of treatments and their side effects?
The different types of breast cancer treatment options available are:
Breast Conservation Surgery (BCS) – Most of the ladies with the early disease can have their breast conserved.
BCS is possible even for larger tumours after reducing them with chemotherapy. Sometimes, the help of plastic
surgical techniques is required to maintain adequate shape and size of the breast (Oncoplasty).
Breast removal (Mastectomy) – Those who undergo mastectomy do not necessarily have advanced disease.
Sometimes, even in early disease, there are precancerous changes in a wide area of the breast or multiple
tumours being present wide apart from each other (multicentric disease). The breast can be reconstructed using
the patient’s own tissues with or without synthetic implants.

Systemic (Chemo, Hormone or Targeted) Therapy
Certain markers on tumour cells help in deciding the need for hormone and targeted therapy. Chemotherapy
usually consists of 6-8 cycles administered in daycare at an interval of 15-21 days. Hormone therapy, in form of
tablets, continues for five years or more. A type of targeted therapy may be needed and is typically given for a
year. Chemotherapy may have side effects like hair loss, nausea, vomiting, weakness and most of these can be
well taken care of by modern medicines. Hairs grow back after chemotherapy is stopped.
Radiation
All patients who undergo BCS, those with large tumours or with involved lymph glands require radiation therapy
in addition to surgery and systemic therapy. With modern techniques of radiation, it is possible to minimize the
side effects on skin, lungs and heart. A typical course of radiation usually lasts for 30-35 days and is done as an
outpatient. Newer techniques have made it possible to shorten the duration further in the select group of
patients.
Follow-up Check-ups
Regular follow-up checks (https:/
/healthcheckup.manipalhospitals.com/) are needed to monitor for side-effects
of treatment and detect the recurrence of disease if any. Initial follow up visits are more frequent and the interval
between the checks increases as the time passes by with only annual checks required after 5 years.
