What is LETS?
LETS (Local Environmental Transect Survey) is a citizen science project where students map and measure trees along an elevation gradient to study the effects of climate change on forest biomes. Over 400 students and 30 teachers have participated in LETS days, where they survey over 600 trees across 1200 meters in elevation. Students record species, measure trees, and enter the data which is then analyzed to show trends in species distribution with elevation. Participating in the authentic science project helps students better understand issues like climate change and how it affects their local environment.

OBJETIVO: Monitorar e caracterizar fungos anemófilos e leveduras de fontes bióticas e abióticas de uma unidade hospitalar.
MÉTODOS: As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente e em dois períodos, do centro cirúrgico e unidades de terapia intensiva adulto e neonatal em hospital de Araraquara, Estado de São Paulo. Para coleta de fungos anemófilos foi utilizado amostrador tipo Andersen de simples estágio. A pesquisa de leveduras foi feita das mãos e de orofaringe de profissionais de saúde, bem como de superfícies de leitos e de maçanetas das áreas críticas.
RESULTADOS: Foram recuperados do centro cirúrgico 32 gêneros de fungos anemófilos e 31 das unidades de terapia intensiva. Os gêneros mais freqüentemente isolados foram Cladophialophora spp., Fusarium spp., Penicillium spp., Chrysosporium spp. e Aspergillus spp. Durante o período de estudo, houve reforma e implantação de uma unidade dentro do hospital, que coincidiu com o aumento na contagem de colônias de Cladophialophora spp., Aspergillus spp. e Fusarium spp. Leveduras foram encontradas em 39,4% dos profissionais de saúde (16,7% das amostras dos espaços interdigitais, 12,1% do leito subungueal e 10,6% da orofaringe) e, em 44% das amostras do mobiliário, com predomínio do gênero Candida (C. albicans, C. guilliermondii, C. parapsilosis e C. lusitaniae) seguido por Trichosporon spp.
CONCLUSÕES: Observou-se número relativamente elevado de fungos anemófilos (potencialmente patogênicos) em áreas especiais e níveis expressivos de leveduras em fontes bióticas e abióticas. O monitoramento microbiológico ambiental deve ser realizado, principalmente em salas especiais com pacientes imunocomprometidos, sujeitos à exposição de patógenos do meio ambiente, assim como, advindos de profissionais de saúde.

We also incorporate technical elements like upbeat music and sound effects to make our newscasts appealing to younger audiences.

- 2. WIUX Alumni Newsletter March 2015 WIUX Alumni Spotlight: Peter Goerner I got to speak with WIUX alum Peter Goerner a few weeks ago. Pe- ter was a station manager at WIUX back in the ‘80s. After coming on board as a DJ in the fall of 1980, he became station manager in 1981. As a first year MBA student, Peter got involved with WIUS after learning about the station at the student in- volvement fair. Peter had previous radio experience from his time at Notre Dame. Peter’s role as station manag- er allowed him the opportunity to manage people and their issues, experiences that helped him later in life. We joked that capably man- aging a bunch of rebellious hipsters truly trains you for the real world. I asked Peter what his fondest WIUS memories were. He proceed- ed to reminisce about the day Mike Conway, then the News Director, WIUX takes home IBS award Each year at the Intercollegiate Broad- casting System conference, an awards ceremony is held to recognize high school and college radio and television stations. Awards are presented in a variety of cate- gories (news, sports, production, etc.) and achievements (“Best Show Promo”, “Best Station Manager”, etc.). We are proud to announce that WIUX took home the IBS award for “Best Liner”. Station Manager Sarah Thompson accept- ed the award for the knock-knock style liner, which was produced in conjunction with former Music Director Tori Miner. WIUX was also nominated in 12 other categories. Additionally, Thompson and General Manger Carolyn Suna hosted their own panel addressing the difficulties faced while moving a radio station. During the panel, the two WIUX managers spoke on positive tactics for an efficient move and building community in a post-move environment. This is the second consecutive year WIUX has received IBS awards. Last year, Pure Student Radio won the award for “Best News Interview” for the interview with comedy troupe Whitest Kids U’ Know, conducted by former News Directors Christina Bernar- din and Morgan Wooderson. WIUX aims to continue this recent string of success in subsequent years, and hopes to continue to provide high-quality, student-pro- duced content. Conway came upstairs and introduced himself to Peter, only a DJ at the time, and commented on how professionally he’d conducted his show. Peter was drawn to WIUX for a lot of the same rea- sons that students today are drawn to it: a desire to get away from mainstream radio content. Only back then, it was Brian Eno or the Police, not Courtney Barnett or Kendrick Lamar. Decades later, WIUX still resonates on the same wavelength we all broadcast on. Are you a WIUX/WIUS alum? Foxygen is one of the biggest and brightest names in indie rock. Twin Peaks and TOPS are both on their way up; they’re young, hungry, and extremely tal- ented. With a bevy of local acts rounding out the line- up, there’s every reason to believe that Culture Shock 2015 will go down in WIUX history as a momentous oc- casion.
