Article 370 Not Revoked In
Jammu & Kashmir Yet
The decision that Narendra Modi has taken
about Article 370 is still talked about without
a final decision made yet about Jammu and
Kashmir being separate union territories.
Article 370 is about Jammu & Kashmir
having special rights of their own flag and
constitution.
Updates About What Is
Happening
-> The Government cancels Article 370
for now
-> The article 370 would come into the
picture only after there is a constitutional
revision that is aligned to article 368.
-> Amit Shah hasn’t passed a bill on
Article 370 yet
-> The President gets the rights to announce
that Jammu and Kashmir would not follow Article
370
-> Article 370 would be debated for a while now
What Did The
Government Do On 6th
August?
Jammu and Kashmir to be two Union
Territories and not a state yet. This bill
is introduced by the government.
For now, Rajya Sabha has passed a
bill asking for Jammu and Kashmir
to be two separate Union Territories.
The Lok Sabha is yet to do it after they
do it, it would go to the President for
his approval and if he approves it the
government would authorize it and
Jammu and Kashmir would no longer
be a state.
What Is The Present
Status Of Jammu &
Kashmir?
Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are
two union territories for now
Jammu and Kashmir would be
governed by legislative laws
There would be no legislative rights for
Ladakh
Ramnath Kovind authorized a
notification that Article 370 is not going
to operative
What Is Article 370?
Ever since the constitution has come
into existence this Article was made for
Jammu & Kashmir who are disturbed
because of the turmoil between
countries fighting for it.
In Jammu & Kashmir, the Central
Government would need permission
from the State Government and that would be
altered now.
This article gives a detailed picture about which
state would have jurisdictional rights over
Jammu & Kashmir.
What Would Be The
Difference In Jammu &
Kashmir Without Article 370?
-> There would be no special powers
exercised by Jammu and Kashmir
-> There would no more be dual citizenship in
Kashmir, it would be one citizenship for all
-> The flag for Jammu and Kashmir would no
more be different, it would be the Indian flag only
-> Earlier minorities did not have reservations
but now they would get reservations to about 15
percent
-> There would be no restriction over buying
land and property in Jammu & Kashmir
anymore. Earlier, only the residents of Kashmir
had the rights
-> Nothing would happen to a woman’s
citizenship status rights even if she married out
of Jammu and Kashmir
-> Children will benefit from the right to
education

Kosi And Nechi River To Be Linked - The
4,900 Crores Project!
The Seemanchal region in Bihar to be
given on lease as the center has taken
up a project to connect the Kosi &
Mechi River, this project is worth 4,900
crores
Kosi and Nechi are known to be the
second-best interlinking project in the
entire country. Ken Batwa was one
of the best one’s in Madhya Pradesh
earlier.
What is the intention of
this project?
The main motto behind this project is
to get saved from floods and difficulty
in the entire region and it is focused
on having a green revolution in
Seemanchal.
Apart from this, the intention of this
project is to provide better irrigation
facilities to lakhs of acres of land
in and around the areas of Bihar in
places such as Araria, Kishanganj,
and Purnia.
The Water Resource Department
Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha is
monitoring this project by staying
in touch with the Central Water
Development Authority and he met the
Union Minister to further get approval
on this project.
Details about this project
Mechi is an essential part of the
Mahananda river and it has less water,
the excess water from Kochi
would be put into this river
through Hanuman Nagar.
This process of transferring
water would help stabilize
what is surplus by providing
to what is the deficit. This
practice would improve the
irrigational facilities.
This project is capable of
getting a national project
status, said, experts. The
state leadership to focus on
this project. On a majority,
the center would fund for this
project and it would not be left
on the state to be burdened
with the expenditure.
The WRD minister calls this
inter-linking project a green
revolution project because it
does not want to cause any
disturbance to any part of the
land where the population
resides or in the forest areas.
The land that will be used up
for this project is within 1400
hectares and it is not close
to any wildlife sanctuary or
national parks.
All in all, if you look at the
benefits of this project it is
balancing surplus and deficit
by sending water from Kosi to
Mechi, it is not causing harm
to any other part of lands and
finally, it is a green revolution
project and at the same time,
it is working on improving
irrigational facilities.

Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath is synonymous with
the ancient art form, Pattachitra. One of the many art
forms to have survived over thousand years, Pattachitra
can virtually act like a historical chronicle of our
country through time.
9 UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT
PATTACHITRA ART
INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
1. A single
Pattachitra
painting can
even take
months to
complete.
A single Pattachitra
painting takes at least
five to 15 days, while
some even taking months
to complete. The timing
to carve one Pattachitra
painting depends upon
the level of intricacy and
size of the paintings.
However, it takes years of
practice, dedication and
skill for an artisan to
carve a flawless and
magnificent piece.
2. Original
Pattachitra
paintings are
made from
100% natural
materials.
A lot goes into preserving
the original appeal of this
art form, and the chitrakars
of Odisha seemed to have
mastered that art. What
gives Pattachitra an edge
over other art forms is the
fact that the colours used
are 100% natural and are
prepared by the chitrakars
using ancient methods.
Simple and rustic in
appearance, you will be
surprised to know that
Pattachitra paintings
require immense patience,
intense hard work and
skilled craftsmanship. Let’s
share some interesting bits
of information about the art
that are as mind blowing
as the masterpieces the
art has given us.
While white is made using
conch shells, a mineral colour
named hingula is used as red
colour and a stone named
harikala is used for yellow.
3. Pattachitra
paintings are not
just restricted to
cloth and canvas.
The creativity of Pattachitra
artists is not just limited
to canvas and cloth. They
celebrate the art form by
painting murals on the outer
walls of their houses. These
paintings depict mythological
scenes from the Panchatantra,
the Puranas, the Ramayana
and the Mahabharata.
4.Pattachitra art is
believed to be the
illustrated story
books of the olden
days.
The main themes of Pattachitra
paintings have always been
inspired by Lord Jagannath
and the Vaishnava sect.
Many Pattachitra paintings
are amazing representations
of stories of Lord Jagannath
and Radha-Krishna, the
ten incarnations of Vishnu,
episodes from the Ramayana,
the Mahabharata and many
more. So, one can imagine
that much before Amar

Chitra Katha, mothers were reading
out stories to their children from
Pattachitra paintings.
5. The best Pattchitra
art work can be fund in
the Raghurajpur village
of Odisha.
Pattachitra paintings have an uncanny
resemblance to the old murals
and paintings done on the wall of
religious centres in ancient Odisha.
While Pattachitra art is famous all
over Odisha, if you want to find
the best work then head straight to
Raghurajpur. Deeply driven the love
and passion for the art, Pattachitra
artists from this village have not just
kept this art form alive through ages,
but have also earned the status of
heritage village for the wide and
unique range of crafts practised there.
6. Pattachitra paintings
are known for their floral
borders.
Pattachitra is a disciplined form of art with
set rules and restrictions. A floral border
is a must in Pattachitra paintings, and so
is the use of natural colours, restricting
them to a single tone. This creates a
distinct look and feel that is typical to
Pattachitra and cannot be replicated!

7. Pattachitra art usually
runs in the family;
Generally, Pattachitra art is practised
by the entire family of chitrakars.
While the women prepare the glue,
the canvas and help out in filling the
borders, the master painter, usually a
male, draws the initial sketch and gives
the final touches to the painting.
8. Over time, Pattachitra
art gave birth to
the Puri school of
painting.
Pattachitra has largely remained
uninfluenced by the other schools of
Indian paintings, namely the Mughal
and Pahadi styles as Odisha had
remained uninvaded by the Mughals
for a fairly long time, giving the art
form a window to evolve its own
unique styles which gave birth to the
Puri school of painting.
9. Originally done
mainly by men, now
Pattachitra art is done
by women and young
girls too.
interestingly, this ancient art form
hasn’t suffered a slow death due to
lack of enterprise. Chitrakars today
send their children out for exposure
and education apart from training
them in this traditional art form to
ensure that they can run their own
business rather than depending on
middlemen. Though mostly done by
men, the art form is now being taken
up full time by women and young
girls.
Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath
is synonymous with the ancient art
form, Pattachitra. One of the many
art forms to have survived over
thousand years, Pattachitra can
virtually act like a historical chronicle
of our country through time. Simple
and rustic in appearance, you will be
surprised to know that Pattachitra
paintings require immense patience.

Of Sri jagannatha Puri
INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION AND CULTURE
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
One of the most awaited festivals in the Orissa state as well as in
India, Jagannath Rath Yatra is an annual event, which is celebrated
in the month of June or July. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath
(Lord Krishna), his sister Goddess Subhadra and his elder brother
Lord Balabhadra. It is also called Gundicha Yatra, Chariot Festival,
Dasavatara and Navadina Yatra.
WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019
20
INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION AND CULTURE
It is the oldest Ratha Yatra
celebrated in the India and all over
the world. This festival is celebrated
on the second day of the Shukla
Paksha, Ashadh month as per
the traditional Oriya calendar. It is
considered most auspicious to visit
the temple during this period. The
festival in Odisha is celebrated for
nine days, the commencement of
this festival is called as the Rath
Yatra and the return journey on a
ninth day is called as Bahuda Jatra.
The celebrated Ratha Yatra Festival
is said to have started in the time
of Svarochisha Manu of the second
manvantara and is predicted to
continue until the end of the second
half of Lord Brahma’s lifetime.
Even in the Valmiki Ramayana, it
is mentioned that when Lord Rama
was getting ready to leave this
world, he told Vibhishan, Ravana’s
younger brother, to worship Lord
Jagannatha, the Lord of the Iksvaku
dynasty in His absence.
The Skanda Purana also fixes
the date of the Ratha Yatra as the
second day of the bright fortnight if
the month of Ashadha, a day called
Pushyami Nakshatra by astrological
calculations. The Padma Purana
describes that in Purushottama-
Kshetra, or Jagannatha Puri, the
supremely blissful Personality of
Godhead pretends to be made of
wood. In this way, although the
Lord takes on what appears to be
a material form, it is completely
spiritual by the causeless mercy
of the Lord for the conditioned
souls who cannot perceive the
transcendental domain of His.
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
Where the festival is
celebrated?
Ratha Yatra is organized
in puri. At the Jagannath
temple in puri the car
festival is celebrated. Puri is
approximately an hour and
a half from the capital city of
bhubaneswar.
When is the festival
celebrated?
As per the traditional Odia
calendar, the Ratha Yatra
begins on the second day
of Shukla Paksha (waxing
phase of the moon or bright
fortnight) of the Hindu lunar
month of Ashadha. In 2019,
it commences on July 4 and
ends on July 15.
Once every nine to 19 years,
when the month of Ashadha
is followed by another month
of Ashadha (known as
“double-Ashadha”), a rare
and special Nabakalebar
ritual takes place. Meaning
“new body”, Nabakalebara
is when the wooden temple
idols are replaced with new
ones. In the last century, the
ritual was performed in 1912,
1931, 1950, 1969, 1977,
1996, and 2015.
Nabakalebara: The
making of God
Since the idols of Lord
Jagannath, his elder brother
Balabhadra and sister
Subhadra are made from
wood, they decay over time
and need to be replaced. The
new idols are crafted from
neem wood. However, not all
neem trees are suitable for
this purpose. According to the
scriptures, the trees need to
have certain qualities (such as
specific number of branches,
color, and location) for each of
the idols.
On the year when the idols
are due to be replaced,
a contingent of priests,
servants, and carpenters
sets out from the Jagannath
Temple to find the appropriate
neem trees (locally known as
Daru Brahma) in a procession
called the Banajag Yatra. The
priests walk bare-footed to the
temple of Goddess Mangala
at Kakatpur, around 50
kilometers from Puri. There,
the Goddess appears in a
dream, and guides the priests
as to where the trees can be
found.
Once the trees are located,
they’re secretly brought back
to the temple in wooden
carts, and the new idols are

carved by a special team of carpenters.
The carving takes place in a special
enclosure, known as Koili Baikuntha,
accessed via the temple’s north gate.
Lord Krishna is believed to have been
cremated there, after being accidentally
killed by hunter Jara Savara.
The creation of new idols and
destruction of the old idols symbolizes
reincarnation.
Devotional songs and prayers from
the Vedas are chanted continuously
outside the area where the new idols
are being carved from the neem wood.
Once they’re completed, the new idols
are carried inside the inner sanctum of
the temple and placed facing the old
idols. The supreme power (Brahma)
is then transferred from the old to the
new idols, in a ritual known as Brahma
Paribartan (Changing the Soul).
This ritual is carried out in privacy.
The priest performing the ritual is
blindfolded, and his hands and feet are
wrapped in thick layers of cloth, so that
he can’t see or feel the transfer.
Once the ritual is complete, the new
idols are seated on their throne. The
old idols are taken to Koili Baikuntha
and buried there in a sacred ceremony
before dawn. It’s said that if anybody
sees this ceremony, apart from the
priests who perform it, they will die. As
a result, the state government orders
a full blackout of lights in Puri on the
night the ceremony is performed.
Afterwards, the temple rituals
recommence as normal. Flowers and
new garments are given to the deities,
food is offered, and pujas (worship) are
performed.
Pulling Of The Chariot:
The pulling of the chariot start after the given
time frame. The wooden horses are fixed
before staring of the pulling of the chariot. It
starts with Lord Balavendra and then the Ratha
of Devi Subhadra is pulled. At the end of the
pulling of the chariot of Lord Jagannatha is
performed. No Chariot pulling is done after
sunset. Usually on the second day three
chariots reaches Gundicha Ghar or Gundicha
temple.

Buhuda Yatra Or Return
Journey:
At the Gundicha temple there three gods stays
for nine days, including three days on the
journey. On 9th day three Deities shifted from
Gundicha temple to their respective Chariot
and return journey starts towards Main temple.
This journey also takes two days and on 2nd
day all chariots could reach the entrance of
main temple.
After returning from Gundicha Mandir
near main entrance all three gods will
stay for one night on the chariots and
during this time they will wear gold
ornaments. Many devotees travel to
puri to see god in these golden dress or
locally know and Suna Vesa.
Tourist from all parts of the world will visit
puri during this time. As only Hindus are
allowed to visit inside the main temple
so this is an opportunity for all other
religion and some other cast devotees to
have Darshan ( holy view ) of the three
gods, Jagannatha , Balabhadra and Devi
Subhadra.
How is the Festival
Celebrated?
The festival begins with the idols of Lord
Jagannath, along with his elder brother
Balabhadra and sister Subhadra, being
taken out of their abode in the Jagannath
Temple. The three of them travel to
Gundicha Temple, a few kilometers
away. They remain there for seven days
before returning via Mausi Maa Temple,
the abode of Lord Jagannath’s aunt.
The idols are transported on towering
chariots, which have been made to
resemble temples, giving the festival
its name of Ratha Yatra. The Chariot
Festival. Around one million pilgrims
usually flock to this colorful event.
What Ritual are performed
during the Festival:
Every year, three huge new chariots
are made for the idols to be transported
on during the festival. It’s a very
detailed process that takes place in
public, at the front of the royal palace

near the Jagannath Temple
. Construction always
commences on the occasion
of Akshaya Tritiya. In 2019, it
occurs on May 7.
About 18 days before the
Ratha Yatra festival starts,
the three idols are given a
ceremonial bath with 108
pitchers of water. This is
known as Snana Yatra and it
takes place on the full moon
in the Hindu lunar month of
Jyeshtha (known as Jyeshtha
Purnima). In 2019, it falls on
June 17. It’s believed that
the deities become sick after
the bath. Hence, they’re
kept out of public view until
they appear, dressed and
renewed, on the new moon in
Ashadha (known as Ashadha
Amavasya). In 2019, it falls on
July 2.
The occasion is called
Navajouban Darshan.The
Ratha Yatra is a community
festival. People don’t worship
in their houses or fast.When
the gods return from their
journey, they’re decorated
and adorned with ornaments
of pure gold and given a
nourishing drink, before
being placed back inside the
Jagannath Temple.
An entertaining comic scene is
enacted for onlookers, as part
of the grand finale. Goddess
Lakshmi is angry that her
husband, Lord Jagannath,
has stayed away for so long
without inviting or informing
her. She closes the doors of
the temple on him, locking
him out. Finally, he manages
to placate her with sweets,
and she relents and lets him
enter.
Important Ratha
Yatra Ritual Dates
For 2019:
Sri Gundicha: July 4;
Placement of the deities in
the chariots and journey to
Gundicha Temple. The first
chariot to move is that of
Lord Balabhadra. Next is
Subhadra’s, and last Lord
Jagannath’s. Pulling of the
chariots starts at 4 p.m. after
the relevant rituals have been
completed.
Hera Panchami: July 8;
Goddess Lakshmi, the wife
of Lord Jagannath, gets
concerned because he hasn’t
come back. Irritated, she goes
to Gundicha Temple to find
him and see what’s going on.
Devotees carry the deity in a
palanquin to the temple.
Bahuda Yatra: July 12;
The grand return journey to
the Lion’s Gate entrance of
Jagannath Temple. Rituals
take place from noon to 2 p.m.
The chariots are drawn in
reverse order, commencing at
around 4 p.m.
Suna Besha: July 13;
Decoration of the deities in
gold ornaments. This ritual
was introduced during the
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
reign of king Kapilendra Deb
in 1430 and is particularly
popular. It happens in the
evening, from 5 p.m. to 11
p.m.
Niladri Bijaya/Bije: July
15;
Deities are placed
back inside
Jagannath Temple.
This spectacular chariot
festival celebrated for 8
days, is held at the famous
Jaganath Temple at Puri
(Orissa). Thousands of
devotees flock to Puri during
the occasion as they believe
that a glimpse of Lord Jagnath
in his chariot gives salvation.
Images of Lord Jaganath
- the Lord of the Universe,
his sister Subhadra and
brother Balbhadra are taken
out in a procession in three
immense chariots. The main
chariot is 14 meters high
and 10 meters square with
16 wheels. The deities are
brought out of the temple
to the chariots by rhythmic
movement called ‘Pahandi’
in a royal procession to the
accompaniment of the beat
of the ‘cymbals’ and drums
and chanting of prayers by
devotees.
The pushing and shoving
to seat Lord Jagannath on
his chariot continues for
hours. The god it seems is
testing the perseverance of
his devotees. The devotees in
turn coax, cajole, they promise
sweetmeats and other delicacies,
when all this fails they call the
Lord names and even give
blows to the idol, all the while
the surging crowd chants, sings
and dances. It is believed that on
these days Lord Jagannath will
descend from his pedestal and
mingle with his devotees with
no barrier between them. After
seating the idols, the traditional
King of Puri sweeps the Chariots
with a golden broom.
Thousands of devotees pull these
chariots to Gundicha Mandir, a
temple 3 km away. After a week,
on ‘Ashadha Sukla Dasami’, the
10th day of the bright fortnight
of Ashadha (June-July), return
journey or ‘Bahuda Yatra’ of the
deities commences in the same
manner from Gundicha temple to
the main temple like Rath Yatra.
When two months of
Ashadha fall in one year,
Rath Yatra is observed as
the festival of ‘Nabakalebar’
the old deities are buried
within the temple premises
(‘Koilibaikuntha’) and are
replaced by new deities,
carved out of Margosa
trees for which there are set
procedures. Double Ashadha
occurs at intervals of 8 to 19
years. Construction of the
chariots begin as early as
April.
One of the most awaited
festivals in the Orissa state
as well as in India, Jagannath
Rath Yatra is an annual
event, which is celebrated in
the month of June or July. I
hope this article has describe
the culture and tradition of
Ratha Yatra.
Chandrayaan 2
With the successful launch of the Chandrayaan
2, it is not surprising that the Indian Space
Research Organisation has initiated something
that hasn’t been done by any of the
countries before.
India’s Second Lunar Mission
to Lunar South Pole
The first lunar mission with the
Chandrayaan – 1, which was a success
too, the Indian space researchers are all
set to explore the Lunar south pole for
better pictures and evidences for possible
breakthrough in the future findings and
explorations.
The Chandrayaan – 2 consists of three
distinct parts in it – the orbiter, the rover
named as Pragyan and finally, the lander,
Vikram.
The spacecraft finally took off from
launching pad in Sriharikota on July
22nd, 2019 and is all set to land on the
moon on September 07th, 2019. The
space scientists have designated stating
that while the mission life of the Orbiter
is around 1 year, that of the orbiter and
the lander will be one Lunar day which is
equivalent to 14 Earth days.
While the first lunar mission by ISRO
was conducted in 2008, the scientists
are working to conduct and complete
this entire mission in 3 phases – the
Chandrayaan 1, Chandrayaan 2 and
finally, the Chandrayaan 3.
The final mission is believed to be
conducted in 2024 but hasn’t been
decided upon the tentative date or month
yet.
Comparing Chandrayaan 1 vs.
Chandrayaan 2
The Chandrayaan 1 was the first
successful lunar mission conducted by
the Indian Space Research Organisation
in October 2008. The functionality of
the parts of the spaceship was there
till the end of August 2009. Unlike the
second installment, the first mission’s
components included an orbiter as well
as an impactor.

The Chandrayaan spaceship
was launched with the aid of
PSLV – XL rocket from the
infamous Satish Dhawan
Space Centre located in
Sriharikota.
The Chandrayaan 2, on the
other hand, was recently
launched into the space on
its mission towards the lunar
expedition on July 22nd, 2019
with the GSLV – Mk III rocket.
As mentioned before, it has
three components – the lunar
orbiter, the lander and finally,
the rover. The main objective
behind this specific launch is to
gauge the possible availability
as well as the primal location of
possible water traces on moon.
With the Chandrayaan 2,
the scientists are expecting
to promote a soft landing of
the lander, Vikram on the
lunar surface and then finally
deploy their rover, Pragyaan
to further conduct the scientific
experiments to achieve their
goals and objectives.
The Chandrayaan 1 weighed
1380 kg during life off while the
Chandrayaan 2 weighs almost
triple of that with 3850 kg.
Landing Site of the
Chandrayaan 2
When it comes to explaining
the landing site of the
Chandrayaan 2, the scientists
are expecting to make an
attempt in launching both the
lander as well as the rover
in one of the high plain
which is nestled between
the two craters of Manzinus
C and Simpelius N.
The reason why the
expedition to the Lunar
south pole is so interesting
is mainly because of the
fact that it does have
the possibility of water
presence there because of
the shadowed areas there.
Additionally, this region is
also believed to have cold
trap craters in there along
with a similar fossil record
much like that of the early
Solar system.
What are the final
objectives of the
Chandrayaan 2?
With such huge
achievements and success
rates, it is believed that the
objectives and goals behind
the Chandrayaan 2 are going
to be a huge success as well.

then delayed because of some technical
issues concerning the pressure on the
helium tanks aboard the rocket
-->The orbiter is expected to conduct
remote sensing observations from around
100 km orbit. The rover and the lander, on
the other hand, will be conducting in-situ
observations around.
-->The main objective of this mission is
to measure the “quantitative estimations of
water ice in the lunar polar regions.”

not make a big deal because

In addition to her work in film
and television, Kaling has
written two New York Times
best-selling memoirs, titled Is
Everyone Hanging Out Without
Me? (And Other Concerns)
(2011) and Why Not Me?
(2015).
Early Life
Mindy Kaling was born in
Cambridge, Massachusetts,
to father Avu Chokalingam, an
architect, and mother Swati
Chokalingam, an obstetrician/
gynecologist (OB/GYN).
Kaling’s parents are from
India, and met while working at
the same hospital in Nigeria.
Her father, of Tamil heritage,
was overseeing the building
of a wing of the hospital, and
her mother, a Bengali, was
working as an OB/GYN. The
family immigrated to the United
States in 1979, the same year
Kaling was born. Kaling’s
mother died of pancreatic
cancer in 2012. Kaling has one
sibling, a brother, Vijay Jojo
Chokal-Ingam, who works as
an educational consultant.
Kaling has said she has never
been called Vera, her first
name, but has been referred to
as Mindy since her mother was
pregnant with her while her
parents were living in Nigeria.
They were already planning
to move to the United States
and wanted, Kaling said, a
“cute American name” for their
daughter, and liked the name
Mindy from the TV show Mork
& Mindy. The name Vera is,
according to Kaling, the name
of the “incarnation of a Hindu
goddess.”
Kaling graduated from
Buckingham Browne &
Nichols, a private school in
Cambridge, in 1997. The
following year, she entered
Dartmouth College, where
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
she was a member of the

was the creator of the comic
strip Badly Drawn Girl in The

newspaper), and was a writer for
the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern
(the college’s humor magazine).
Kaling graduated from Dartmouth
in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree
in playwriting. She was a classics
major for much of college and
studied Latin, a subject she has
been learning since the seventh
grade. Kaling lists the comedy
series Dr. Katz, Saturday Night
Live, Frasier and Cheers as early
influences on her comedy.
Personal Life
Kaling has a close friendship
with B. J. Novak, whom she
met through writing for The
Office. The two dated on and
off while writing and acting on
the show, sometimes mirroring
the on-again, off-again nature
of the relationship between their
respective characters Ryan
Howard and Kelly Kapoor. Novak
is the godfather of Kaling’s
firstborn daughter.
In 2012, Kaling was included in
the Time 100 list of influential
people. In 2014, she was named
one of Glamour magazine’s
Women of the Year.
Kaling is a 1 percent owner
of the Welsh football team
Swansea City A.F.C. based in
Swansea, Wales in the UK.
In December 2017, Kaling
gave birth to a daughter.
On June 10, 2018, she
received the honorary degree
of Doctor of Humane Letters
from Dartmouth College in
Hanover, New Hampshire.
Career
While a 19-year-old
sophomore at Dartmouth,
Kaling was an intern on Late
Night with Conan O’Brien.
Kaling said she was a terrible
intern, “less of a ‘make copies’
intern and more of a ‘stalk
Conan’ intern.”[18] Kaling has
said that she never saw a
family like hers on TV, which
gave her a dual perspective
she uses in her writing.
She thinks the “everyone
against me mentality” is
what she learned as a child
of immigrants. She named
her Mindy Project character
Mindy Lahiri after author
Jhumpa Lahiri.
After college, Kaling moved
to Brooklyn, New York.
Kaling said one of her
worst job experiences was
as a production assistant
for three months on the
Crossing Over With John
Edward psychic show. She
described it as “depressing.”
During this same time,
Kaling performed stand-up
comedy.

Kaling devised her stage
name after discovering while
doing stand-up comedy that
emcees would have trouble
pronouncing her last name,
Chokalingam, and sometimes
made jokes about it. She
toured solo as well as with

was on The Office.
In August 2002, Kaling
portrayed Ben Affleck in an
off-Broadway play called Matt
& Ben, which she co-wrote
with her best friend from
college, Brenda Withers -
who played Matt Damon.
The Office
In 2004, when The Office
producer Greg Daniels was
working to adapt The Office
from the BBC TV series of
the same name, he hired
Kaling as a writer-performer
after reading a spec script she
wrote.
When Kaling joined The Office,
she was 24 years old and was
the only woman on a staff of
eight. She took on the role
of character Kelly Kapoor,
debuting in the series’s second
episode, “Diversity Day.”
Kaling directed The Office
webisode The 3rd Floor. She

titled “Body Language,”
which marked her television
directorial debut.
Her contract was set to expire
at the end of Season 7. On
September 15, 2011, she
signed a new contract to stay
with the show for Season 8 and
was promoted to full executive
producer. Her Universal
Television contract included
a development deal for a
new show (eventually titled
The Mindy Project), in which
she appears as an actress
and contributes as a writer.
Kaling left the series after
the ninth season episode
“New Guys”. However, she
returned to guest star in the
final episode of the series.
Kaling and her fellow writers
and producers of The
Office were nominated five
consecutive times for the
Primetime Emmy Award for

Good News for Indian Techies!
United States House Passes Bill
Removing Country Cap on Green Cards
The United States lawmakers recently passed a Green Card bill
aimed at lifting the per-country limits on the employment-
based cards that would in the main benefit thousands of high-
skilled Indian IT professionals, for whom the wait for Green
card is more than a decade.
A Green Card allows a person to live and
work permanently in the United States.
Titled the Fairness of High-Skilled Immigrants
Act, 2019 or HR 1044, the Bill was passed by
the 435-member House by an overwhelming
majority of 365-65 votes. As per the present
system, out of the total number of family-
based immigrant visas to be given by the U.S.
in a particular year, the people of a country
can be given a maximum of seven percent of
such visas.
The new Bill seeks to increase this seven
percent per-country limit to 15 percent.
Similarly, it also seeks to eliminate the seven
percent per-country cap on employment-
based immigrant visas. In addition, it removes
an offset that reduced the number of visas for
individuals from China.
NRI IMMIGRATION

The bill also establishes
transition rules for
employment-based visas from
FY 2020-22 by reserving a
percentage of EB-2 (workers
with advanced degrees or
exceptional ability), EB-3
(skilled and other workers)
and EB-5 (investors) visas for
individuals from other than
the two countries that get the
largest number of such visas.
As per another provision of
the Bill, not more than 85
percent of the unreserved
visas, would be allotted
to immigrants from any
single country. Before it
can be signed into law by
the U.S. president, the Bill,
however, has to be passed
by the Senate, wherein the
Republicans enjoy a majority.
An identical bill sponsored by
Senators Kamala Harris and
Mike Lee is likely to be taken
up soon.
The Senate bill S386
currently has 34 co-sponsors.
Congressman John Curtis,
speaking on the floor of the
House, said the Bill will create
a first-come, first-served
system providing certainty
to workers and families and
enabling the U.S. companies
to flourish and compete in a
global economy as they hire
the brightest people to create
products, services, and jobs,
irrespective of where they
were born.
If President Donald Trump
“is serious about merit-based
legal immigration, he should
help usher this bill into law,”
said Congresswoman Zoe
Lofgren.
Bill Hailed by Indian
American Professionals
The passage of the Bill was
hailed by Indian professionals
from across the U.S.,
particularly those from the
Silicon Valley in California,
Seattle area in Washington
state, the Greater Washington,
D.C. area and the tri-state area
of New York, New Jersey, and
Connecticut.
The Department of Homeland
Security, however, has said
it does not support the Bill.
“This bill would do nothing to
move the current employment-
sponsored system toward a
more merit-based system,”
said Joseph S Joh, Assistant
Director and Senior Advisor in
the Office of Legislative Affairs,
Department of Homeland
Security. Top American IT
companies welcomed the
passage of the bill and urged
the Senate to pass it at the
earliest.
“Today the U.S. House passed
the legislation to ensure
people from all countries are
treated alike in the Green
Card process. This promotes
a fair high-skilled immigration
system that’s good for the
business and our economy,”
said Microsoft president Brad
Smith.
“This bill will help ensure
those seeking permanent
residency don’t have to
wait for extraordinarily long
periods, - projected at 50
years or more for people
from countries like India and
China - simply because of
their country of origin,” said
FWD. U.S. president Todd
Schulte, hailing the passage
of the FHSI Act.
FWD.U.S. is an advocacy
organization representing top
Silicon Valley firms including
Facebook, Google, Microsoft,
and DropBox.
“Eliminating ‘per-country’
caps for employment-based
Green Cards and raising
caps for family-based
green cards will make the
system fairer for immigrant
families and strengthen
the United States’ ability to
recruit and retain top global
talent by establishing a
fair and predictable path to
permanent legal status,” he
said.
Hindu American Foundation
too welcomed the passage
of the Bill. “It is now up to
the Senate to ensure that
fairness is delivered to high-
skilled immigrants who have
been stuck in a decades-
long backlog waiting for
their chance to become
full-fledged contributors to
the American economy.
The time to act is now,” said
Jay Kansara of the Hindu
American Foundation.

Boris Johnson Has Close
Indian Connection
Boris Johnson’s estranged
wife Marina Wheeler, whom
he married in 1993, is half
Indian. Wheeler is the niece
of the late editor and writer
Khushwant Singh. Prior to
announced their separation
early this year after being
in 25 years of marriage,
Johnson had traveled several
times to India with Marina.
They have four children
together.
Johnson is expected to
depend on his declared
personal connect with Prime
Minister Narendra Modi to
deliver a “truly special” UK-
India relationship.
In his letter to the Indian
diaspora Tory membership
base, Johnson wrote that,
during his meeting with Modi,
he had stressed upon how
India and UK were modern
democracies and should
work together to promote
trade and prosperity. Johnson
told Modi that the two nations
should work closely to tackle
the challenges that their
countries face.
The former Mayor of
London and former Foreign
Secretary, 55, has earlier
referred to himself as the
son-in-law of India. Marina’s
mother, Dip Singh, who is
still alive, was married to
Khushwant Singh’s youngest
brother, Daljit Singh.
In a column for The Tribune,
veteran journalist and
Khuswant Singh’s son Rahul
Singh writes that Johnson
visited the Ranthambore tiger
reserve along with Marina
and three of their children last
year. During a family get-
together, Rahul Singh got to
meet Johnson.
“Though I had met him once
before in Mumbai some years
earlier, this was the first time
I got a chance to talk to him
one-to-one, at some length.
I was surprised that he knew
so much about India and its

politics. Should he become
Britain’s next PM, I think
those Indian insights, thanks
mainly due to his 25-years
of marriage to Marina,
however rocky it may have
been, and personal visits to
this country, should augur
well for better Indo-British
ties.”
However, Johnson is known
to have made several
gaffes, including some
related to India. When he
was Foreign Secretary,
Johnson was berated at a
Sikh gurdwara for talking
about whiskey exports to
India - despite alcohol being
forbidden in the Sikh faith.
With a saffron turban on his
head, Johnson said in the
Bristol gurdwara in 2017:
“Whenever we go to India,
to Mumbai or to Delhi, we
have to bring ‘clinkie’ in our
baggage.
“We have to bring Johnnie
Walker, we have to bring
whiskey because as you
may know there is duty
of 150 percent in India on
imports of Scotch whiskey,
so we have to bring it in
duty-free for our relatives.
But imagine what we could
do if there was a free trade
deal with India - which there
will be.” A woman devotee
reportedly angrily told
Johnson: “How dare you
talk about alcohol in a Sikh
temple.”
In November 2014, as London
mayor, Johnson suggested
that countries that “haven’t had
the benefit of British rule” are
now “less fortunate” - during
a discussion on Winston
Churchill. Johnson explained
how he felt that Churchill would
have been “very proud” at the
“continuing legacy of Britain”
in former colonies around the
world. UK’s Boris Johnson
Pledges Post-Brexit Migration

“He would have been very
proud at the continuing
legacy of Britain in those
places around the world,
and particularly I think he
would have been amazed
at India, the world’s largest
democracy, and a stark
contrast with other less
fortunate places that haven’t
had the benefit of British
rule, if I can say this on the
record.... why not? It’s true,

On 6 September 2018, Indians rejoiced as the Supreme Court

The host Zakaria asked if the

The global report for the period
2005-06 and 2015-16 reveals
that India lifted 271 million
people out of impoverishment,
marking cut downs in ten
indicators, cooking fuel,

sanitation, and nutrition.
In the 101 countries where
the study was performed,
1.3 billion people are
“multidimensionally poor”,
meaning the definition of
poverty does not solely
include the economics or
income but other factors
such as poor quality of
work, poor health, and the
threat of violence.
The report identifies 10
countries, with a combined
population of about 2 billion,
have illustrated a reduction
in poverty.
The 10 countries are India,
Cambodia, Bangladesh,
Vietnam, Haiti, Ethiopia,
Democratic Republic of
Congo, Peru, Nigeria, and
Pakistan.
“This progress was largely
driven by South Asia.
In India, there were 271
million fewer people in

the number dipped by 19
million between 2004 and

India’s MPI value reduced from 0.283 in
2005-06 to 0.123 in 2015-2016.
The report cites Jharkhand, which
reduced multidimensional poverty from
74.9 percent to 46.5 percent in the
ten years since 2005-06, improving
the best, followed by Rattanak Kiri in
Cambodia.
Jharkhand, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh
have the worst MPI value.
India was among the top three
countries where poverty reduction
in rural areas outpaced that in urban
areas. The report cited this as an
indicator of pro-poor development.
“Traditionally disadvantaged subgroups such as
those living in rural India, Muslims, the Scheduled
Castes and Tribes, and young children are still
the poorest in India,” a UNDP official told Indian
Express.
In 2005-2006, the population in India living in
multidimensional poverty stood at about 640
million people (55.1 percent) and this reduced
to 369 million people (27.9 percent) living in
poorness in 2015-16.
According to the report, children experience
poverty to an extreme degree than adults and
are more probable to be deprived of all the 10
MPI indicators, lacking essentials such as clean
water, sanitation, education, and basic nutrition.

Chandra Shekar Azad
An Inspiration To Young India
The struggle and pain that the
freedom fighters went through
are turned out as blessings
for India. The running and
coming generations must be
grateful for the contribution
of the fighters. Now, you
must know little more about
a dynamic freedom fighter-
Chandrashekar Azad. Let’s
admire and take some
inspiration from them together.
Early Life Of Azad-
A Powerful Soul
Azad’s original name was
Chandra Shekhar Tiwari.
His mother wanted him to
FREEDOM FIGHTER
be a Sanskrit scholar. Azad
was well trained in wrestling,
swimming and archery. From
a very small age, he was a
devotee and a follower of Lord
Hanuman. He started to build
a desirable physique with
powerful physical activities like
javelin throwing.
Azad As A Freedom
Fighter- Fearless
Steps
Chandra Shekar Azad was a
strong believer of socialism
and he was a part of ‘The
Hindustan Socialist Republican
Association’. At any cost,
he wanted a complete
independent India. At a
young age, he was involved
in revolutionary activities.
After the death of Lala Lajpat
Ray, Azad killed the British
Assistant Superintendent of
Police John Poyantz which
was an act avenge. He
trembled Britishers till he was
alive.
Chandra Shekar Azad dint
leaves any chance of driving
Britishers from India. His
foundation as a freedom
fighter was by himself when
was just 15 years. It was
Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-
Cooperation Movement when
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
Azad decided to fight for his
motherland. As part of fight
and protests, he was arrested.
When the authorities asked him
his name and father’s name
and residence- he replied that
his name is “Azad”, his father’s
names as Swatantrata and his
residence as the “prison cell”.
In his first protest, we had
to receive 15 whiplashes
as punishment. He took the
punishment with calmness and
then was called as Azad from
then.
A Promised Death-
Martyrdom Is Heroic
The British government was
waiting to capture Chandra
Shekar Azad dead or alive. The
government also announced
30000 rewards in return for
Azad’s information. Azad
was with his friends in Alfred
Park, Allahabad and he was
surrounded by policemen.
The policemen asked Azad to
surrender. But he was not the
one who meant to surrender.
He fought and killed three
policemen, also was badly
injured with the police attack.
After exhausting with injuries,
he had no chance of escaping.
Then, with the last bullet, he
shot himself in his head. He
kept up his words of never to
be captured by the British.
Quotes Of Chandra
Shekar Azad
“ I believe in a religion which
teaches freedom equality and
brotherhood”
“A plane is always safe on the
ground but it is not made that,
always make meaningful risks
in life to achieve great heights.”
“Don’t see others doing better
than you, beat your own
records because success
is a fight between you and
yourself.”
“We will face the bullets of the
enemies, we are free and
will remain free.”
If we are watching a movie
and having entertainment
which is temporary. Then,
we must read and learn
about our freedom fighters
which teach us something
valuable and permanent.
Hope Azad’s story
taught you a lot!

Ways To Overcome Grief And Look
Forward To A Fresh Start!
Why Live In Grief?
“ Grief is found in two parts. The first one is loss and
the second one is in remaking life”
- Anne Roiphe
AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET
Do we really overcome grief or do we
live with it? Is grief going to last long in
our heart or does it ever heal? While
grief is an emotion no one escapes from,
we all face it or heal from it in different
ways.
What comes to your mind when you
think of grief? Is it those times when
you have been through it? Or is it the
struggle behind how you got over it.
While both are equally complicated and
difficult. One’s grief can never be felt
while it can just be understood.
We all define our grief based on what
hits on us the most. No one’s grief can
be defined as big or small, it is a feeling
and you cannot get into someone
and feel it. Not everyone has the
same reasons to feel deep grief. If for
someone grief is to deal with a broken
relationship for someone grief is losing
money.
If you look at it, it is easy to be
philosophical and say that grief makes
us. However, it is true that grief is an
experience that will build you and at the
same time affect your mind. It works
both ways. How you perceive it, deal
with it and choose to let it affect you is
completely on you.
To overcome grief it is important to
understand it and observe it yourself.
It is dangerous to let grief linger in the
mind because it can end up causing

  • 10. CURRENT AFFAIRS Article 370 Not Revoked In Jammu & Kashmir Yet The decision that Narendra Modi has taken about Article 370 is still talked about without a final decision made yet about Jammu and Kashmir being separate union territories. Article 370 is about Jammu & Kashmir having special rights of their own flag and constitution. Updates About What Is Happening -> The Government cancels Article 370 for now -> The article 370 would come into the picture only after there is a constitutional revision that is aligned to article 368. -> Amit Shah hasn’t passed a bill on Article 370 yet -> The President gets the rights to announce that Jammu and Kashmir would not follow Article 370 -> Article 370 would be debated for a while now
  • 11. What Did The Government Do On 6th August? Jammu and Kashmir to be two Union Territories and not a state yet. This bill is introduced by the government. For now, Rajya Sabha has passed a bill asking for Jammu and Kashmir to be two separate Union Territories. The Lok Sabha is yet to do it after they do it, it would go to the President for his approval and if he approves it the government would authorize it and Jammu and Kashmir would no longer be a state. What Is The Present Status Of Jammu & Kashmir? Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are two union territories for now Jammu and Kashmir would be governed by legislative laws There would be no legislative rights for Ladakh Ramnath Kovind authorized a notification that Article 370 is not going to operative What Is Article 370? Ever since the constitution has come into existence this Article was made for Jammu & Kashmir who are disturbed because of the turmoil between countries fighting for it. In Jammu & Kashmir, the Central Government would need permission from the State Government and that would be altered now. This article gives a detailed picture about which state would have jurisdictional rights over Jammu & Kashmir. What Would Be The Difference In Jammu & Kashmir Without Article 370? -> There would be no special powers exercised by Jammu and Kashmir -> There would no more be dual citizenship in Kashmir, it would be one citizenship for all -> The flag for Jammu and Kashmir would no more be different, it would be the Indian flag only -> Earlier minorities did not have reservations but now they would get reservations to about 15 percent -> There would be no restriction over buying land and property in Jammu & Kashmir anymore. Earlier, only the residents of Kashmir had the rights -> Nothing would happen to a woman’s citizenship status rights even if she married out of Jammu and Kashmir -> Children will benefit from the right to education
  • 12. CURRENT AFFAIRS Kosi And Nechi River To Be Linked - The 4,900 Crores Project! The Seemanchal region in Bihar to be given on lease as the center has taken up a project to connect the Kosi & Mechi River, this project is worth 4,900 crores Kosi and Nechi are known to be the second-best interlinking project in the entire country. Ken Batwa was one of the best one’s in Madhya Pradesh earlier. What is the intention of this project? The main motto behind this project is to get saved from floods and difficulty in the entire region and it is focused on having a green revolution in Seemanchal. Apart from this, the intention of this project is to provide better irrigation facilities to lakhs of acres of land in and around the areas of Bihar in places such as Araria, Kishanganj, and Purnia. The Water Resource Department Minister Sanjay Kumar Jha is monitoring this project by staying in touch with the Central Water Development Authority and he met the Union Minister to further get approval on this project. Details about this project Mechi is an essential part of the Mahananda river and it has less water,
  • 13. the excess water from Kochi would be put into this river through Hanuman Nagar. This process of transferring water would help stabilize what is surplus by providing to what is the deficit. This practice would improve the irrigational facilities. This project is capable of getting a national project status, said, experts. The state leadership to focus on this project. On a majority, the center would fund for this project and it would not be left on the state to be burdened with the expenditure. The WRD minister calls this inter-linking project a green revolution project because it does not want to cause any disturbance to any part of the land where the population resides or in the forest areas. The land that will be used up for this project is within 1400 hectares and it is not close to any wildlife sanctuary or national parks. All in all, if you look at the benefits of this project it is balancing surplus and deficit by sending water from Kosi to Mechi, it is not causing harm to any other part of lands and finally, it is a green revolution project and at the same time, it is working on improving irrigational facilities.
  • 14. WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019 14 Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath is synonymous with the ancient art form, Pattachitra. One of the many art forms to have survived over thousand years, Pattachitra can virtually act like a historical chronicle of our country through time. 9 UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT PATTACHITRA ART INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART
  • 15. AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET 1. A single Pattachitra painting can even take months to complete. A single Pattachitra painting takes at least five to 15 days, while some even taking months to complete. The timing to carve one Pattachitra painting depends upon the level of intricacy and size of the paintings. However, it takes years of practice, dedication and skill for an artisan to carve a flawless and magnificent piece. 2. Original Pattachitra paintings are made from 100% natural materials. A lot goes into preserving the original appeal of this art form, and the chitrakars of Odisha seemed to have mastered that art. What gives Pattachitra an edge over other art forms is the fact that the colours used are 100% natural and are prepared by the chitrakars using ancient methods. Simple and rustic in appearance, you will be surprised to know that Pattachitra paintings require immense patience, intense hard work and skilled craftsmanship. Let’s share some interesting bits of information about the art that are as mind blowing as the masterpieces the art has given us. While white is made using conch shells, a mineral colour named hingula is used as red colour and a stone named harikala is used for yellow. 3. Pattachitra paintings are not just restricted to cloth and canvas. The creativity of Pattachitra artists is not just limited to canvas and cloth. They celebrate the art form by painting murals on the outer walls of their houses. These paintings depict mythological scenes from the Panchatantra, the Puranas, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. 4.Pattachitra art is believed to be the illustrated story books of the olden days. The main themes of Pattachitra paintings have always been inspired by Lord Jagannath and the Vaishnava sect. So, one can imagine that much before Amar
  • 16. WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019 16 INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART Chitra Katha, mothers were reading out stories to their children from Pattachitra paintings. 5. The best Pattchitra art work can be fund in the Raghurajpur village of Odisha. Pattachitra paintings have an uncanny resemblance to the old murals and paintings done on the wall of religious centres in ancient Odisha. While Pattachitra art is famous all over Odisha, if you want to find the best work then head straight to Raghurajpur. Deeply driven the love and passion for the art, Pattachitra artists from this village have not just kept this art form alive through ages, but have also earned the status of heritage village for the wide and unique range of crafts practised there. 6. Pattachitra paintings are known for their floral borders. Pattachitra is a disciplined form of art with set rules and restrictions. A floral border is a must in Pattachitra paintings, and so is the use of natural colours, restricting them to a single tone. This creates a distinct look and feel that is typical to Pattachitra and cannot be replicated! Simple and rustic in appearance, you will be surprised to know that Pattachitra paintings require immense patience, intense hard work and skilled craftsmanship.
  • 17. AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET 7. Pattachitra art usually runs in the family; Generally, Pattachitra art is practised by the entire family of chitrakars. While the women prepare the glue, the canvas and help out in filling the borders, the master painter, usually a male, draws the initial sketch and gives the final touches to the painting. 8. Over time, Pattachitra art gave birth to the Puri school of painting. Pattachitra has largely remained uninfluenced by the other schools of Indian paintings, namely the Mughal and Pahadi styles as Odisha had remained uninvaded by the Mughals for a fairly long time, giving the art form a window to evolve its own unique styles which gave birth to the Puri school of painting. 9. Originally done mainly by men, now Pattachitra art is done by women and young girls too. interestingly, this ancient art form hasn’t suffered a slow death due to lack of enterprise. Chitrakars today send their children out for exposure and education apart from training them in this traditional art form to ensure that they can run their own business rather than depending on middlemen. Though mostly done by men, the art form is now being taken up full time by women and young girls. Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath is synonymous with the ancient art form, Pattachitra. One of the many art forms to have survived over thousand years, Pattachitra can virtually act like a historical chronicle of our country through time. Simple and rustic in appearance, you will be surprised to know that Pattachitra paintings require immense patience.
  • 18. WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019 18 Car Festival Or RathaYatra Of Sri jagannatha Puri INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION AND CULTURE
  • 19. AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET One of the most awaited festivals in the Orissa state as well as in India, Jagannath Rath Yatra is an annual event, which is celebrated in the month of June or July. It is dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Lord Krishna), his sister Goddess Subhadra and his elder brother Lord Balabhadra. It is also called Gundicha Yatra, Chariot Festival, Dasavatara and Navadina Yatra.
  • 20. WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019 20 INDIAN DIASPORA TRADITION AND CULTURE It is the oldest Ratha Yatra celebrated in the India and all over the world. This festival is celebrated on the second day of the Shukla Paksha, Ashadh month as per the traditional Oriya calendar. It is considered most auspicious to visit the temple during this period. The festival in Odisha is celebrated for nine days, the commencement of this festival is called as the Rath Yatra and the return journey on a ninth day is called as Bahuda Jatra. The celebrated Ratha Yatra Festival is said to have started in the time of Svarochisha Manu of the second manvantara and is predicted to continue until the end of the second half of Lord Brahma’s lifetime. Even in the Valmiki Ramayana, it is mentioned that when Lord Rama was getting ready to leave this world, he told Vibhishan, Ravana’s younger brother, to worship Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the Iksvaku dynasty in His absence. The Skanda Purana also fixes the date of the Ratha Yatra as the second day of the bright fortnight if the month of Ashadha, a day called Pushyami Nakshatra by astrological calculations. The Padma Purana describes that in Purushottama- Kshetra, or Jagannatha Puri, the supremely blissful Personality of Godhead pretends to be made of wood. In this way, although the Lord takes on what appears to be a material form, it is completely spiritual by the causeless mercy of the Lord for the conditioned souls who cannot perceive the transcendental domain of His.
  • 21. AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET Where the festival is celebrated? Ratha Yatra is organized in puri. At the Jagannath temple in puri the car festival is celebrated. Puri is approximately an hour and a half from the capital city of bhubaneswar. When is the festival celebrated? As per the traditional Odia calendar, the Ratha Yatra begins on the second day of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon or bright fortnight) of the Hindu lunar month of Ashadha. In 2019, it commences on July 4 and ends on July 15. Once every nine to 19 years, when the month of Ashadha is followed by another month of Ashadha (known as “double-Ashadha”), a rare and special Nabakalebar ritual takes place. Meaning “new body”, Nabakalebara is when the wooden temple idols are replaced with new ones. In the last century, the ritual was performed in 1912, 1931, 1950, 1969, 1977, 1996, and 2015. Nabakalebara: The making of God Since the idols of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra are made from wood, they decay over time and need to be replaced. The new idols are crafted from neem wood. However, not all neem trees are suitable for this purpose. According to the scriptures, the trees need to have certain qualities (such as specific number of branches, color, and location) for each of the idols. On the year when the idols are due to be replaced, a contingent of priests, servants, and carpenters sets out from the Jagannath Temple to find the appropriate neem trees (locally known as Daru Brahma) in a procession called the Banajag Yatra. The priests walk bare-footed to the temple of Goddess Mangala at Kakatpur, around 50 kilometers from Puri. There, the Goddess appears in a dream, and guides the priests as to where the trees can be found. The carving takes place in a special enclosure, known as Koili Baikuntha, accessed via the temple’s north gate. Lord Krishna is believed to have been cremated there, after being accidentally killed by hunter Jara Savara. The creation of new idols and destruction of the old idols symbolizes reincarnation. Devotional songs and prayers from the Vedas are chanted continuously outside the area where the new idols are being carved from the neem wood. Once they’re completed, the new idols are carried inside the inner sanctum of the temple and placed facing the old idols. The supreme power (Brahma) is then transferred from the old to the new idols, in a ritual known as Brahma Paribartan (Changing the Soul). This ritual is carried out in privacy. The priest performing the ritual is blindfolded, and his hands and feet are wrapped in thick layers of cloth, so that he can’t see or feel the transfer. Once the ritual is complete, the new idols are seated on their throne. The old idols are taken to Koili Baikuntha and buried there in a sacred ceremony before dawn. It’s said that if anybody sees this ceremony, apart from the priests who perform it, they will die. As a result, the state government orders a full blackout of lights in Puri on the night the ceremony is performed. Afterwards, the temple rituals recommence as normal. Flowers and new garments are given to the deities, food is offered, and pujas (worship) are performed. Pulling Of The Chariot: The pulling of the chariot start after the given time frame. In 2019, it occurs on May 7. About 18 days before the Ratha Yatra festival starts, the three idols are given a ceremonial bath with 108 pitchers of water. This is known as Snana Yatra and it takes place on the full moon in the Hindu lunar month of Jyeshtha (known as Jyeshtha Purnima). In 2019, it falls on June 17. It’s believed that the deities become sick after the bath. Hence, they’re kept out of public view until they appear, dressed and renewed, on the new moon in Ashadha (known as Ashadha Amavasya). In 2019, it falls on July 2. The occasion is called Navajouban Darshan. The Ratha Yatra is a community festival. People don’t worship in their houses or fast. When the gods return from their journey, they’re decorated and adorned with ornaments of pure gold and given a nourishing drink, before being placed back inside the Jagannath Temple. An entertaining comic scene is enacted for onlookers, as part of the grand finale. Goddess Lakshmi is angry that her husband, Lord Jagannath, has stayed away for so long without inviting or informing her. She closes the doors of the temple on him, locking him out. Finally, he manages to placate her with sweets, and she relents and lets him enter. It happens in the evening, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Niladri Bijaya/Bije: July 15; Deities are placed back inside Jagannath Temple. This spectacular chariot festival celebrated for 8 days, is held at the famous Jaganath Temple at Puri (Orissa). Thousands of devotees flock to Puri during the occasion as they believe that a glimpse of Lord Jagnath in his chariot gives salvation. Images of Lord Jaganath - the Lord of the Universe, his sister Subhadra and brother Balbhadra are taken out in a procession in three immense chariots. The main chariot is 14 meters high and 10 meters square with 16 wheels. The deities are brought out of the temple to the chariots by rhythmic movement called ‘Pahandi’ in a royal procession to the accompaniment of the beat of the ‘cymbals’ and drums and chanting of prayers by devotees. The pushing and shoving to seat Lord Jagannath on his chariot continues for hours. The god it seems is testing the perseverance of his devotees. The devotees in turn coax, cajole, they promise sweetmeats and other delicacies, when all this fails they call the Lord names and even give blows to the idol, all the while the surging crowd chants, sings and dances. It is believed that on these days Lord Jagannath will descend from his pedestal and mingle with his devotees with no barrier between them. After seating the idols, the traditional King of Puri sweeps the Chariots with a golden broom. Thousands of devotees pull these chariots to Gundicha Mandir, a temple 3 km away. After a week, on ‘Ashadha Sukla Dasami’, the 10th day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha (June-July), return journey or ‘Bahuda Yatra’ of the deities commences in the same manner from Gundicha temple to the main temple like Rath Yatra. When two months of Ashadha fall in one year, Rath Yatra is observed as the festival of ‘Nabakalebar’ the old deities are buried within the temple premises (‘Koilibaikuntha’) and are replaced by new deities, carved out of Margosa trees for which there are set procedures. Double Ashadha occurs at intervals of 8 to 19 years. Construction of the chariots begin as early as April. One of the most awaited festivals in the Orissa state as well as in India, Jagannath Rath Yatra is an annual event, which is celebrated in the month of June or July. Chandrayaan 2 With the successful launch of the Chandrayaan 2, it is not surprising that the Indian Space Research Organisation has initiated something that hasn’t been done by any of the countries before. India’s Second Lunar Mission to Lunar South Pole The first lunar mission with the Chandrayaan – 1, which was a success too, the Indian space researchers are all set to explore the Lunar south pole for better pictures and evidences for possible breakthrough in the future findings and explorations. The Chandrayaan – 2 consists of three distinct parts in it – the orbiter, the rover named as Pragyan and finally, the lander, Vikram. The spacecraft finally took off from launching pad in Sriharikota on July 22nd, 2019 and is all set to land on the moon on September 07th, 2019. The space scientists have designated stating that while the mission life of the Orbiter is around 1 year, that of the orbiter and the lander will be one Lunar day which is equivalent to 14 Earth days. While the first lunar mission by ISRO was conducted in 2008, the scientists are working to conduct and complete this entire mission in 3 phases – the Chandrayaan 1, Chandrayaan 2 and finally, the Chandrayaan 3. The final mission is believed to be conducted in 2024 but hasn’t been decided upon the tentative date or month yet. Comparing Chandrayaan 1 vs. Chandrayaan 2 The Chandrayaan 1 was the first successful lunar mission conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation in October 2008. The functionality of the parts of the spaceship was there till the end of August 2009. Unlike the second installment, the first mission’s components included an orbiter as well as an impactor. • 28. The Chandrayaan spaceship was launched with the aid of PSLV – XL rocket from the infamous Satish Dhawan Space Centre located in Sriharikota. The Chandrayaan 2, on the other hand, was recently launched into the space on its mission towards the lunar expedition on July 22nd, 2019 with the GSLV – Mk III rocket. As mentioned before, it has three components – the lunar orbiter, the lander and finally, the rover. The main objective behind this specific launch is to gauge the possible availability as well as the primal location of possible water traces on moon. With the Chandrayaan 2, the scientists are expecting to promote a soft landing of the lander, Vikram on the lunar surface and then finally deploy their rover, Pragyaan to further conduct the scientific experiments to achieve their goals and objectives. The Chandrayaan 1 weighed 1380 kg during life off while the Chandrayaan 2 weighs almost triple of that with 3850 kg. Landing Site of the Chandrayaan 2 When it comes to explaining the landing site of the Chandrayaan 2, the scientists are expecting to make an attempt in launching both the lander as well as the rover in one of the high plain which is nestled between the two craters of Manzinus C and Simpelius N. The reason why the expedition to the Lunar south pole is so interesting is mainly because of the fact that it does have the possibility of water presence there because of the shadowed areas there. Additionally, this region is also believed to have cold trap craters in there along with a similar fossil record much like that of the early Solar system. What are the final objectives of the Chandrayaan 2? • 48. WWW.WISHESH.NET | AUGUST 2019 48 Good News for Indian Techies! United States House Passes Bill Removing Country Cap on Green Cards The United States lawmakers recently passed a Green Card bill aimed at lifting the per-country limits on the employment- based cards that would in the main benefit thousands of high- skilled Indian IT professionals, for whom the wait for Green card is more than a decade. A Green Card allows a person to live and work permanently in the United States. Titled the Fairness of High-Skilled Immigrants Act, 2019 or HR 1044, the Bill was passed by the 435-member House by an overwhelming majority of 365-65 votes. As per the present system, out of the total number of family- based immigrant visas to be given by the U.S. in a particular year, the people of a country can be given a maximum of seven percent of such visas. The new Bill seeks to increase this seven percent per-country limit to 15 percent. Similarly, it also seeks to eliminate the seven percent per-country cap on employment- based immigrant visas. In addition, it removes an offset that reduced the number of visas for individuals from China. NRI IMMIGRATION
  • 49. AUGUST 2019 | WWW.WISHESH.NET The bill also establishes transition rules for employment-based visas from FY 2020-22 by reserving a percentage of EB-2 (workers with advanced degrees or exceptional ability), EB-3 (skilled and other workers) and EB-5 (investors) visas for individuals from other than the two countries that get the largest number of such visas. As per another provision of the Bill, not more than 85 percent of the unreserved visas, would be allotted to immigrants from any single country. Before it can be signed into law by the U.S. president, the Bill, however, has to be passed by the Senate, wherein the Republicans enjoy a majority. An identical bill sponsored by Senators Kamala Harris and Mike Lee is likely to be taken up soon. The Senate bill S386 currently has 34 co-sponsors. Congressman John Curtis, speaking on the floor of the House, said the Bill will create a first-come, first-served system providing certainty to workers and families and enabling the U.S. companies to flourish and compete in a global economy as they hire the brightest people to create products, services, and jobs, irrespective of where they were born. If President Donald Trump “is serious about merit-based legal immigration, he should help usher this bill into law,” said Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren. Bill Hailed by Indian American Professionals The passage of the Bill was hailed by Indian professionals from across the U.S., particularly those from the Silicon Valley in California, Seattle area in Washington state, the Greater Washington, D.C. area and the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The Department of Homeland Security, however, has said it does not support the Bill. “This bill would do nothing to move the current employment- sponsored system toward a more merit-based system,” said Joseph S Joh, Assistant Director and Senior Advisor in the Office of Legislative Affairs, Department of Homeland Security. Top American IT companies welcomed the passage of the bill and urged the Senate to pass it at the earliest. “Today the U.S. House passed the legislation to ensure people from all countries are treated alike in the Green Card process. This promotes a fair high-skilled immigration system that’s good for the business and our economy,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. “This bill will help ensure those seeking permanent residency don’t have to wait for extraordinarily long periods, - projected at 50 years or more for people from countries like India and China - simply because of their country of origin,” said FWD. U.S. president Todd Schulte, hailing the passage of the FHSI Act. FWD.U.S. is an advocacy organization representing top Silicon Valley firms including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and DropBox. “Eliminating ‘per-country’ caps for employment-based Green Cards and raising caps for family-based green cards will make the system fairer for immigrant families and strengthen the United States’ ability to recruit and retain top global talent by establishing a fair and predictable path to permanent legal status,” he said. Hindu American Foundation too welcomed the passage of the Bill. “It is now up to the Senate to ensure that fairness is delivered to high- skilled immigrants who have been stuck in a decades- long backlog waiting for their chance to become full-fledged contributors to the American economy. The time to act is now,” said Jay Kansara of the Hindu American Foundation.

When he was Foreign Secretary, Johnson was berated at a Sikh gurdwara for talking about whiskey exports to India - despite alcohol being forbidden in the Sikh faith. With a saffron turban on his head, Johnson said in the Bristol gurdwara in 2017: “Whenever we go to India, to Mumbai or to Delhi, we have to bring ‘clinkie’ in our baggage. “We have to bring Johnnie Walker, we have to bring whiskey because as you may know there is duty of 150 percent in India on imports of Scotch whiskey, so we have to bring it in duty-free for our relatives. But imagine what we could do if there was a free trade deal with India - which there will be.” A woman devotee reportedly angrily told Johnson: “How dare you talk about alcohol in a Sikh temple.” In November 2014, as London mayor, Johnson suggested that countries that “haven’t had the benefit of British rule” are now “less fortunate” - during a discussion on Winston Churchill.
