CREATING SMARTER UTILITIES May 2012
2. What do we work on?
Water and wastewater systems management and operational engineering with
several years of practice working directly with Operators (bidding, infrastructure
investment plans, managing PPP, managing concessions, implementing
information systems – GIS, SCADA, Repair systems, developing infra-structure
asset management programs, assuring technical support, promoting network
efficiency, among other), in Portugal and Brazil.
Partnership with LNEC (Portuguese Laboratory of Civil Engineering) working in
AWARE-P – Advance water asset rehabilitation (www.aware-p.org) - providing
water and wastewater utilities with the know-how and tools needed for efficient
decision-making in the scope of infrastructure asset management of urban water
services. The AWARE-P program coordinator is Helena Alegre, IWA’s VP.
Joint venture with the largest CRM company in the Portuguese Water Sector
implementing a business intelligence tool. Wiseworks have developed, internally,
a decision support tool that uses information from Billing, GIS and SCADA,
promoting data accuracy , defining standards and creating reports for internal
(e.g. Board and Shareholders) or external (e.g. Regulator) demands. This tool can
easily be adapted to any other CRM providing a structured set of essential
information, clear to any user.
3. Where are we heading?
This Business Unit will be able to develop activities across a diverse range in
Water Utilities, from consulting and advising to project management and
applications development, being an excellent driver to establish local
partnerships, to create empathy between foreign countries and to leverage other
kind of Projects, with different investment needs.
We intend to keep growing to new markets with similar needs, diversifying
segments and products, improving business processes and defining standard
methodologies for a sustainable and clear approach to progressive asset
management policies. We believe that value can be added through operational
excellence and, most of all, strong contracts and negotiation platforms in any
management model (Public, Concessions, PPP or other).
We propose to create a Business Unit promoting a large scale platform to
develop and implement engineering tools and applications towards a better
operational and technical management of Water Operators, believing that, more
than ever, data and information systems have a critical role in organizations.
We have an adapted model to use, adding value, either in High Income Countries
(HIC) or Low and Middle Income Countries (LAMIC).
4. What we believe?
Managing utilities, water services and infrastructures requires high standards
that must be based on reliable, structured data/information.
It is essential to promote solid methodologies for a sustainable and clear
approach to progressive asset management policies, improving business
processes while delivering efficient services.
Being a part of an international Group give us scale to grow from an tested
platform.
The growing process can be made through solid partnerships, knowing right
from the beginning the added value of each partner.
The Water Sector is similar around the world and it has a large dependence
on local policies, typically with low management standards. The capability to
add value with “controlled” effort is something that should be kept in mind in
the next years. Top management will come but it isn´t there yet…

6. What we do?
Services - Redefining utilities management -
We created tools to assist management and support operations. At the same
time we developed structured methodologies to support utility management at
all levels:
- Water audits and loss control;
- Urban wastewater control;
- Modeling and profiling of urban water demands;
- Performance of urban infrastructure systems;
- Hydraulic and water quality modeling;
- Information systems analysis and consulting (GIS, SCADA, CRM, BI, ERP);
- Management and development of interfaces between systems, promoting
data integration and defining analysis standards (GIS, SCADA, CRM, BI, ERP);
- Infrastructure asset management.
Products - Provide efficiency and sustainability based on information
