A. Wise men from the East followed the star to find Jesus and worship him. Though the religious leaders knew where the Messiah would be born, they did not seek him. B. King Herod tricked the wise men to find Jesus so he could kill him, fulfilling prophecies of Jesus' death. C. Joseph, Mary and Jesus fled to Egypt and later settled in Nazareth, also fulfilling prophecies.
Why does Matthew 2:13-15 refer to a fulfillment of Hosea 11:1-4 when the two events in each of these passages seem completely unrelated except for the word "Egypt"? Is there a parallel between the flight of Joseph, Mary and Jesus to Egypt and modern refugees and immigrants? What is your Egypt?
Long ago, about 2000 years, when King Herod ruled Judea (now part of Israel), God sent the angel Gabriel to a young woman who lived in the northern town of Nazareth. The girl's name was Mary and she was engaged to marry Joseph.

U.S.President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan will be announced soon after 9th April. It is speculated to call on Israel to turn over most of Judea and Samaria to the Palestinian Authority to establish Palestinian State. If this is the case, how will God react to this so-called "deal of the century" peace plan?

order is based off of the Byzantine Catholic order of readings for the morning and evening services for
Christmas Eve. For 2.5 points extra credit, read the following narratives and write a 1 page reflection (12pt
Times New Roman, 1-inch margins, single-spaced); you can reflect on such things as how a Christian would
understand these passages, your own reactions to these passages or their order, or how these passages refer to
different topics we have discussed in this course. This extra credit assignment is due by class time (either email

(Matthew 1: 18-25)
18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but
before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce
her quietly.
20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph,
son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that
this child has been conceived in her.
21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,”
which means “God is with us.”
24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.
(Luke 2:1-20)
1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled.
2 This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3 So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town.
4 And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,
5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.
6 While they were there, the time came for her to have her child,
7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock.
9 The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck
with great fear.
10 The angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be
for all the people.

_MINISTRY_Come Let Us Adore Him #2 The Wise MenRohan Dredge
In week 2 of our Come Let Us Adore Him series, Pastor Glen Cox spoke about this part of the Christmas story which is rich in content and meaning.
It reminds us all of one of the most incredible pilgrimages ever undertaken by mankind. Glen uses the example of a personal pilgrimage to draw a comparison and bring context to the need in every one of us to pursue those aspects of life that are important to us. This message dispels many common myths about the journey that these men took to discover the 'King of the Jews' some 2000 years ago.
This year @discoverychurch we are “meeting the people who met Jesus"
These wise men were not kings and were waiting for the great day when the star would shine from the east.
They knew the day was coming and once identified, had enough faith to follow this star. When you think about it, the first people to worship the young man Jesus, wasn't the Jewish nation, whose capital was only 10 km away but a group of gentile astrologers from ancient Persia or Babylon who travelled for months for this very brief encounter. Amazing!
One thing we know for sure is once you meet the person of Jesus, you can never go back the way you came. Your life is changed forever!

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Wise men seeking Him…
•Many claim to be Christian,
but when confronted with
truths of doctrine, they don’t
want to follow theWay of the Master
•They say, “a loving God won’t send me to
Hell…”, forgetting that He is also a just and
righteous, and HOLY God who cannot
tolerate sin, in any form
4. Wise men seeking Him…
•It is one thing to hear and know
about Christianity, but a com-
pletely different thing to believe and obey
what the Bible says
•The Magi– came from the East, looking for
the newborn king– another thing to claim
to seek the truth, but what happens when
you find it?
5. Wise men seeking Him…
•Remember Matthew was written
to the Jews– 12 times in the book
the word “fulfilled” is found
•Today we’ll see 3 more OT prophecies
fulfilled!
•We’ll also see how 3 different types of people
acted after learning of the King of Kings’
birth (people haven’t changed either)
6. Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of
Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi
from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
2 “Where is He who has been born King of the
Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have
come to worship Him.” 3When Herod the king
heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem
with him. 4 Gathering together all the chief
priests and scribes of the people, he inquired
of them where the Messiah was to be born.
7. 5They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for
this is what has been written by the prophet:
6 ‘ANDYOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH,
ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF
JUDAH;
FOR OUT OFYOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER
WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.’”
7Then Herod secretly called the magi and
determined from them the exact time the star
appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem
8. and said, “Go and search carefully for the
Child; and when you have found Him, report
to me, so that I too may come and worship
Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went their
way; and the star, which they had seen in the
east, went on before them until it came and
stood over the place where the Child was.
10When they saw the star, they rejoiced
exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming
into the house they saw the Child with Mary
9. His mother; and they fell to the ground and
worshiped Him.Then, opening their
treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold,
frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been
warned by God in a dream not to return to
Herod, the magi left for their own country by
another way.
Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of
the Lord *appeared to Joseph in a dream and
said, “Get up!Take the Child and His mother
10. and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell
you; for Herod is going to search for the Child
to destroy Him.”
14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His
mother while it was still night, and left for
Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of
Herod. This was to fulfill what had been
spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON.”
11. 16Then when Herod saw that he had been
tricked by the magi, he became very enraged,
and sent and slew all the male children who
were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from
two years old and under, according to the
time which he had determined from the magi.
17Then what had been spoken through
Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
18 “AVOICE WAS HEARD IN RAMAH,
WEEPING AND GREAT MOURNING,
12. RACHEL WEEPING FOR HER CHILDREN;
AND SHE REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED,
BECAUSE THEY WERE NO MORE.”
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of
the Lord *appeared in a dream to Joseph in
Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and
His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for
those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”
21 So Joseph got up, took the Child and His
mother, and came into the land of Israel. 22 But
13. when he heard that Archelaus was reigning
over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was
afraid to go there. Then after being warned by
God in a dream, he left for the regions of
Galilee, 23 and came and lived in a city called
Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophets: “He shall be called a
Nazarene.”
Matthew 2:1-23, NASB
14. A.Wise Men; the Obedient…
•Vs 1-2, Misconceptions and
legends aplenty about them
•Not 3, probably many
•Astronomers, I believe, led by
teachings Daniel left in legacy
•They teach us 3 ways to find God’s will too:
•Followed the light God provided them
•Confirmed their steps by theWord
•Obeyed God without question; He led their way
15. B. Chief Priests and Scribes…
•Vs 5-6, Sadly, they had the right info,
from Micah 5:2, but seemed as if they
didn’t care enough to meet Him
•Like Bible scholars today…?
•Not the wise guys– they many, many
miles to find Jesus, then they listened
to everything God said after…
•I feel sad for those who won’t seek…
16. C. Herod, the king…
•Vs 7-8, He didn’t want theWord or
theTruth– when he found it he tried
to kill the baby Christ
•Herod the Great– not so– 4’11’– super
angry and super paranoid
•Sons and wife Miriam
•Known for his Architectural works
•Murderous Edomite
17. D. Destined to die from birth…
•Vs, 9-11, the 3 gifts…
•Gold– represents royalty and
the Heavenly Kingdom
•Frankincense– represents
the priesthood and fellowship with God
•Myrrh– representing His death for our sin
•More important is the fact that they
worshipped Him– must have been a sight
18. D. Destined to die from birth…
•We know these events occurred
more than a year after his birth
•Joseph and Mary are in a house
•Jesus called “child” not “infant”
•Herod killed all the boys under two years old
•Mary and Joseph’s offering at Jesus’
circumcision with Simeon would have been
much more than two pigeons, poor offering
19. E. Flight to Egypt…
•Vs 12-15,What a guy this Joseph, yes?!?!
•Another dream and off he goes
•This is another prophecy made
complete from Hosea 11:1
“When Israel was a youth I
loved him, And out of Egypt I
called My son.”
20. F. Massacre of inocents…
•Vs 16-18, another prophecy fulfilled
•Quote from Jeremiah 31:15
•Here, Rachel represents the
mothers of Israel
“Thus says the LORD,
“A voice is heard in Ramah,
Lamentation and bitter weeping.
Rachel is weeping for her children;
She refuses to be comforted for her children,
Because they are no more.”
21. G. Home in Nazareth…
•Vs 19-23, Matthew refers to
“what was spoken by the
prophets” in v23
•Note the the plural but no references
•Nazarene may relate to the Hebrew word
‘netzer’, branch, another name for Jesus
•Because He lived in a despised place, He
was like a lowly branch; but will blossom!
