WIC2006 - Research Paper Recommender Systems: A Random-Walk Based Approach

Every day researchers from all over the world have to filter the huge mass of existing research papers with the crucial aim of finding out useful publications related to their current work. In this paper we propose a research paper recommending algorithm based on the Citation Graph and random-walker properties. The PaperRank algorithm is able to assign a preference score to a set of documents contained in a digital library and linked one each other by bibliographic references. A data set of papers extracted by ACM Portal has been used for testing and very promising performances have been measured.

Context-Aware Recommender System (CARS) models are trained on datasets of context-dependent user preferences (ratings and context information). Since the number of context-dependent preferences increases exponentially with the number of contextual factors, and certain contextual in- formation is still hard to acquire automatically (e.g., the user’s mood or for whom the user is buying the searched item) it is fundamental to identify and acquire those factors that truly influence the user preferences and the ratings. In particular, this ensures that (i) the user effort in specifying contextual information is kept to a minimum, and (ii) the system’s performance is not negatively impacted by irrelevant contextual information. In this paper, we propose a novel method which, unlike existing ones, directly estimates the impact of context on rating predictions and adaptively identifies the contextual factors that are deemed to be useful to be elicited from the users. Our experimental evaluation shows that it compares favourably to various state-of-the-art context selection methods.

Image segmentation, a process used to partition images into distinctive regions, is a crucial task in many nowadays ubiquitous applications. Several methods have been developed to perform segmentation. We present a method that combines Hidden Markov Random Fields (HMRF) and Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) to perform segmentation. HMRF is used for modelling the segmentation problem. This elegant model leads to an optimization problem. The latter is solved using PSO method whose parameters setting is a task in itself. We conduct a study for the choice of parameters that give a good segmentation. The quality of segmentation is evaluated on grounds truths images using Misclassification Error criterion. We use the NDT (Non Destructive Testing) image dataset to evaluate several segmentation methods. These results show a supremacy of the HMRF-PSO method over threshold based techniques.

HMRF model to perform segmentation of volumetric medical images. We have a problem with incomplete data. We seek
the segmented images according to the MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) criterion. MAP estimation leads to the minimization
of an energy function. This problem is computationally intractable. Therefore, optimizations techniques are used to
compute a solution. We will evaluate the segmentation upon two major factors: the time of calculation and the quality of
segmentation. Processing time is reduced by distributing the computation of segmentation on a powerful and inexpensive
architecture that consists of a cluster of personal computers. Parallel programming was done by using the standard MPI
(Message Passing Interface).

Evidence-based Semantic Web Just a Dream or the Way to Go?
The Semantic Web vision emerged with a promise to collect and interlink semantically relevant data from diverse sources in order to to achieve a full potential of the Web. After more than a decade of diligent research, it is the time to start summing up what has been accomplished and how mature Semantic Web research is, so that plans for the future can be charted. One of the key trails of a mature discipline is to have well-designed research methods allowing researchers to establish evidence about the effectiveness of the research ideas. It is equally important to to have knowledge translation methods that allow for transferring the established evidence to decision makers in practice. In this talk, we will first share some experience and challenges in conducting experiments in the area of the Semantic Web. We will next discuss findings of systematic reviews conducted to estimate the level of quality of the existing research results based on the criteria well-known in medical research and recently adopted in empirical software engineering. We will conclude the talk by discussing the importance and potential milestones for the Semantic Web in order to become an evidence-based discipline (similar to medicine or education) capable of producing strong research evidence transferable to practice.

This case study reports on two first-semester programming courses with more than 190 students. Both courses made use of automated assessments. We observed how students trick these systems by analysing the version history of suspect submissions. By analysing more than 3300 submissions, we revealed four astonishingly simple tricks (overfitting, evasion) and cheat-patterns (redirection, and injection) that students used to trick automated programming assignment assessment systems (APAAS). Although not the main focus of this study, it discusses and proposes corresponding counter-measures where appropriate.
Nevertheless, the primary intent of this paper is to raise problem awareness and to identify and systematise observable problem patterns in a more formal approach. The identified immaturity of existing APAAS solutions might have implications for courses that rely deeply on automation like MOOCs. Therefore, we conclude to look at APAAS solutions much more from a security point of view (code injection). Moreover, we identify the need to evolve existing unit testing frameworks into more evaluation-oriented teaching solutions that provide better trick and cheat detection capabilities and differentiated grading support.

We illustrate how contextual task analysis can be supported by TEMPEST, a platform originally created for experience sampling and more generally, longitudinal ambulatory assessment studies. We present a case study that illustrates the extent to which this tool meets the needs of real-world task analysis, describing the gains in efficiency it can provide but also directions for the development of tool support for task analysis.

This case study reports on two first-semester programming courses with more than 190 students. Both courses made use of automated assessments. We observed how students trick these systems by analysing the version history of suspect submissions. By analysing more than 3300 submissions, we revealed four astonishingly simple tricks (overfitting, evasion) and cheat-patterns (redirection, and injection) that students used to trick automated programming assignment assessment systems (APAAS). Although not the main focus of this study, it discusses and proposes corresponding counter-measures where appropriate.
Nevertheless, the primary intent of this paper is to raise problem awareness and to identify and systematise observable problem patterns in a more formal approach. The identified immaturity of existing APAAS solutions might have implications for courses that rely deeply on automation like MOOCs. Therefore, we conclude to look at APAAS solutions much more from a security point of view (code injection). Moreover, we identify the need to evolve existing unit testing frameworks into more evaluation-oriented teaching solutions that provide better trick and cheat detection capabilities and differentiated grading support.
A Multi-Objective Refactoring Approach to Introduce Design Patterns and Fix A...
This document presents a multi-objective search-based software engineering approach to recommend refactorings that introduce design patterns, fix anti-patterns, and improve software quality attributes. The approach uses NSGA-II genetic algorithm to evolve refactoring solutions. An empirical evaluation on 4 open-source Java systems shows the approach outperforms existing techniques in fixing anti-patterns and introducing design patterns while improving quality. Towards Task Analysis Tool Support
This paper discusses challenges in contextual task analysis and the need of tools that support analysts to collect such information in context. Specifically we argue that the analysis of collaborative and distributed tasks can be supported by ambulatory assessment tools. We illustrate how contextual task analysis can be supported by TEMPEST, a platform originally created for experience sampling and more generally, longitudinal ambulatory assessment studies. We present a case study that illustrates the extent to which this tool meets the needs of real-world task analysis, describing the gains in efficiency it can provide but also directions for the development of tool support for task analysis.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
