Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs): A flame retardant found in many buildings that are known to
cause damage to the nervous system, liver, and kidney.
Bisphenol A (BPA): Found in plastic products and known to impact the reproductive system.
Perfluoro octanoic acid (PFOA): AKA Teflon, affects the liver, immune system, and reproductive system.
Acrylamide: A carcinogen that is formed when carbohydrates foods are cooked at high temperatures.
Exposure can lead to cancer and neurological dysfunction.
Mercury: Commonly found in seafood is associated with neurological dysfunction.
Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE): A gasoline additive linked to neurological and reproductive problems.
Parabens: A class of preservatives used in many skincare and makeup products to prevent the growth of
bacteria and mold. They mimic estrogen and may play a role in triggering cancer and other serious
health issues.
Phthalates (pronounced THAL-lates): Plasticizers that make plastic more pliable (think shower curtains).
It’s a huge component of PVC plastic, which is one of the more toxic plastics. In cosmetics, phthalates are
used to make fragrances stick to skin, improve the performance of styling products, and they make nail
polish bend and stick to the curve of your nail. They are thought to block signaling pathways for
hormones like testosterone, and have been linked to birth defects.
