This document discusses the relationship between information technology (IT) and environmentalism. It argues that environmentalists should care about IT for several reasons: IT produces large amounts of electronic waste; free and open source software promote sharing and access to knowledge; and IT can be a tool for democracy and social justice when available to all. The document then outlines specific green IT practices like reducing computer purchases, recycling electronics, and using open standards and free software.

We now use more information in our day-to-day life than before. The volume of information available through radio, television, internet, books, newspapers, and magazines has enlarged manifold, both in developed and developing countries. Increased flows of information between parties, individuals as well as organizations, have made interactions information-intensive. The unprecedented advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) have transformed societies in both developed and developing countries in ways that were unimaginable not so long ago. The way we conduct our personal lives, the way we build and maintain interpersonal relationships, and the way we engage in production and distribution activities have undergone changes that have long-run implications for the society in general and for the economy in particular.
In "The Future of the Internet IV," Director Lee Rainie reports on the results of a new survey of experts predicting what the Internet will look like in 2020 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's 2010 Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Historic West End: "Winston-Salem's Front Porch"echidesi
The story of the century-old neighborhood in the heart of downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Originally designed as a luxury springs-water health resort, later home to manufacturing fortunes in tobacco and textiles, now a center of renewal and entrepreneurship in this growing city of arts, manufacturing, and biomedical services. This PowerPoint was originally designed as a self-running kiosk presentation for the 2005 West End Tour of Homes by the author of a book about the neighborhood's history.
The slides present some of the research from a new book, The New Polymath - which is excerpted and reviewed at www.thenewpolymath.com . Polymath is Greek for Renaissance Person good at many disciplines. It's about how enterprises are learning to put together 3,5, 15 strands of infotech, cleantech, biotech etc to create compound innovations - new algorithms, new energy and new medicine

can anybody think of any world events that changed information systems?
Solution
Systems range from very simple to very complex. There are numerous types of systems. For
example, there are biological systems, mechanical systems, human/mechanical systems,
ecological systems, and social systems.
Following are some technologies that will change technology:-
- 3D printers,
- sensor networks,
- virtual humans
technologies under development now will drastically change our world in the decade to come.
Internet Things:-
We have passed the threshold where more things are connected to the Internet than people. The
transition to IPV6 also supports seemingly limitless connectivity.
Sensor Network:-
Nowadays this technology grows very fast by using this we can track song pollution, air
pollution and we also can track temperature. This technology is growing day by day and many
companies are coming with new ideas related to sensor networks.
Not just Big data, but zettabyte :-
About 5 exabytes of unique information were created in 2008. That\'s 1 billion DVDs. Fast
forward three years and we are creating 1.2 zettabytes, with one zettabyte equal to 1,024
exabytes. \"This is the same as every person on Earth tweeting for 100 years or 125 million years
of your favorite one-hour TV show,\" says Evans. Our love of high-definition video accounts for
much of the increase.
Yes, there are many other things too but I tried to tell you things I know..
The free software history and communities’ journey aheadRicardo Amaro
"The reason why open source happened, the reason it started, was because the people who make software are artists and craftsmen. They are not just mindless drones, that show up every day and put in their hours. They spend their evenings, their weekends, unbelievable amounts of time crafting this software. And they wanna see it used by the most people, and they wanna see it used for the best purposes, typically, and they didn’t see that happening in the proprietary software world, not any of the proprietary software companies. And so they decided – because they could – to write their own world!"

Company Valuation webinar series - Tuesday, 4 June 2024FelixPerez547899
This session provided an update as to the latest valuation data in the UK and then delved into a discussion on the upcoming election and the impacts on valuation. We finished, as always with a Q&A
Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

2. Green IT! IT vs. The Greens IT seems to be so apart from what we do and what we are. Do we have something so say? Why should we care about IT? If IT is: - Just computers - Only enjoyed by geeks and nerds - Microsoft Word - Something I have to use at work And The Greens are: - Preserving the environment - Defending animals and plants - Promoting renewable energy - Fighting against Climate Change
3.
4. Green IT! Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Consider not buying a new PC: - Manufacturing of a PC consumes 240 kg of fossil fuel, 1.500 kg of water. Don't throw, but upgrade - Buy new RAM memory, new hard disks, or accesories instead of a new PC - Use it for another person in your family - Give it a second life as, for example, a DVD-Player - Give it to NGOs for using it in developing countries. Let's promote e-recyling! - Material reused: lead, copper, gold. - New jobs in recyling companies.
5. Green IT! IT is should be for all What computer and IT mean today for the people: - Cheap and wide access to culture (music, books, films...) - Access to an enormous amount of information and knowledge (encyclopedias, newspapers...) - A powerful and inexpensive communication tool (weblogs, instant messaging, VoIP...) - A chance to have a better democracy (e-vote, e-administration...) All people should be able to benefit of this, but: - Women (older than 25) do not use it as much as men - Our parents and grandparents don't take all its advantages - People in developing countries can hardly use a PC There is a digital divide .
6. Green IT! Women and technology - Small number of women using computers (not true for young women under 25) - Small number of women studying engineering and similar subjects (20%) - Very small number of women involved in free software projects (1-5%) Why? IEEE says that there are few women in engineering because: - There is a lack of respected figures or women leaders in the field - There is a lack of support from their colleagues and teachers - If engineering was taught as team-work for solving real problems, that would change Is technology agressive? Is technology just gadgets ? Today, IT is not generally split 50-50 between men and women.
7. Green IT! IT in developing countries What is IT in the developing world important for? Some succesful examples: - Health-related. Communications and tools for health centres. - Set up virtual marketplaces for farmers and small producers. - Communications (i.e. Internet Radio, WiFi networks) - Access to the Internet for schools, for women. Free software in the developing world - It is free: opportunity to have the same technology as the 1 st world. - But piracy is as cheap. Too low IT knowledge to take up free software. One Laptop Per Child. - Initiative to build a $100 laptop and sell 1M of them to developing countries. - Minimal power consumption, minimal production cost, free software, wifi.
8. Green IT! Software revolution is now There are people all over the world “building things” for them, and for you. There is a community of “builders” and “users” working on improving them. The make them free to use, just for the benefit of the community. These “things” are software pieces. Easy to share. Free to use. This is the Free Software Community. Best known examples: - The family of operating systems GNU/Linux - Mozilla Firefox web browser and Mozilla Thunderbird email reader. - E-Mule for file sharing - Apache Web Server : Widely used (60%) in the industr y
9. Green IT! Standards for Freedom Not everyone is welcome in the live streaming of the Council of Europe -What kind of player do I need to view the live streaming media service of the Council of the European Union? - The users have the choice between Microsoft Media Player 6.4 and higher (only for Windows and Macintosh) Websites “ best viewed with Internet Explorer ”, leave out 25% of european users . Freedom of choice. You have to be able to communicate with your Administration, no matter what browser you use, what office suite you prefer, what OS you have. - Word is not an open standard. You can't know the “inside” of the document - OpenDocument(ISO26300) is an open standard. Microsoft doesn't support it. - If information is only in Word, I am forced to buy it or to piracy - Administrations should offer information on the web through open standards
10. Green IT! Knowledge for all No software patents A company should not be allowed to appropiate a piece of software and make us pay for using it. Knowledge is a public good Knowledge should be something considered as a legacy of mankind: It's not our propierty: we stand on the shoulders of giants. So we can't stop our worldmates and the future generations of accesing it. Users of “free knowledge” are free – without limits- to: - Use it - Study it, modify it, adapt it - Copy it, distribute it - Enhance it, extend it
11. Green IT! Are you a pirate? Sharing is not a crime... yet The European Parliament will vote next week on IPRED2, a directive that: - Treates us like criminal enterprises because we share music. - Criminalises Internet Providers for what they users do (so they block file sharing) Take action: - http://www.copycrime.eu/ Do you share your music with your friends? Do you download films from the Internet? Do you watch them with your friends? - Sharing is caring! Do you copy your music and films in CDs and you sell them? Do you broadcast them in a commercial radio station? Do you board ships in the Caribbean carrying the Jolly Roger? - Well... maybe you are a pirate!
12. Green IT! Green politicians Communication with people means speaking to them but also listening a lot more . Internet is the tool for a new democracy , with more participation. Green politicians should have: - Good amount of information flowing through the official channel (with RSS) - Conversations being held with users through weblogs. - Good debate with people. - Collaborative work: one party, one wiki. The politician looses control, but wins importance. The politician should participate not only in his/her own debates. Green infrastructure. - Hardware “as green as possible” (better if recycled) - Free-Open Source content manager for the website. Includes a wiki tool. - GNU/Linux in every computer and a set of common free tools. - OpenOffice as the office suite, a free browser (like Mozilla Firefox)
13. Green IT! IT vs. The Greens revisited Now... Do we have something to say? Should we care about Green IT? IT is also: - Computers producing waste - Opportunity for sharing knowledge and culture with all people - Freedom to use software - A powerful tool for a better democracy And The Greens care for: - Preserving the environment - Defending wide access to culture - Promoting freedom - A better democracy
14. Green IT! Thanks! Now it's your turn! This document is free (use it, share it, modify it, make it better, please do!) It will soon be available at http://www.informaticaverde.org/
