Plastic cards are likely to remain prevalent payment methods for the foreseeable future for several reasons: (1) Plastic cards and the infrastructure supporting them have been established for over 50 years; (2) Many older consumers are more comfortable using plastic cards than digital payment methods; (3) A significant portion of the population does not own smartphones needed for mobile payments. While digital payments are growing, plastic cards offer advantages in terms of ubiquity of acceptance, ease of use, and branding opportunities that will help ensure their continued widespread use.
