Why Is Franz Marc Important
Intro:
I selected the artist Franz Marc. Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany in February 8, 1880. He went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and
is known for cubism and expressionism in his art.
When I laid my eyes on Franz Marc's art, the first element of art that caught my eye was his use of vivid and bold colors. I also enjoyed the
geometrical qualities (cubism) of his paintings.
Your piece:
My painting depicts a girl with fiery orange hair looking down at a little chick she's holding while her own wings are spread out behind her. She's
standing on sand at the beach and dons a green beret, ankle boots, and a green coat that's flapping in the wind. I utilized most of the elements of art,
i.e. line, form, color, and value. For principles

Fiercely The Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Among The...
"Fiercely the Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Among the Heavens," was painted by Thomas Moran in 1875–1876. The artist's use of contrast
between very cool colors to very warm colors attracts attention to the sun and it's brightness in the painting. The painting is vivid, yet impressionistic.
The brushstrokes from the water to the rocky mountains are quite thin and small, but those of the sun are deep, rich, and intense. The brightness and
intensity create a blinding and volcanic sun that appears to be setting the clouds above it on fire. Moran uses darker, inky colors in the water to mute
the background for a moment and allow the viewer to experience the sun in its totality. As the viewer moves away from the sun and back to the water,
he may notice the waves are fervently crashing against the mountain and against each other. The painting overall evokes an image of war and
vengeance. Thomas Moran was influenced by many artists and ideas, but the most important works that influenced him were the epic poem by Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow and a singular painting by J. M. W. Turner.

Turner's artwork. Though, Turner was truly an Englishman, he was known as "American Turner" by many artists, and was admired as such. In 1862,
Moran traveled to England to see and study Turner's work. Upon seeing the work above, "Slave Ship," created by Turner in 1840, Moran was inspired
by both the malevolence of the sun and the twist it had on the history of the painting. J.M.W. Turner "heightened the malevolence of the story by
marshaling all the forces of nature–a roiling, inky sea, a livid sun, and an angry, incendiary sky–creating a setting fit for the Apocalypse". With this
painting and the literature of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Moran moved to paint "Fiercely the Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Along the
Heavens" as an homage to his favorite

Manet Essay
Manet
Much of the art of Manet reflects the developments going on in Paris in the 1860s and 1870s. The rebuilding of Paris was being supervised by Baron
Haussman, as much of the old medieval centre of the city was being destroyed so that the new city could be rebuilt. In his book "The painting of
modern life" TJ Clark argues that modern art of the 20th century evolves from the art produced by Manet during this period of great change in Paris.
Manet's scenes of Parisian cafes, bars and streets reflected the new Paris. Manet's work influenced the impressionist painters, who were a strong
influences on the painting of the 20th century, so in this sense Manet's painting is the first modern art that emerged from the creation of the new Paris...

It was one of the largest efforts to rebuild the centre of a city since ancient times. While there was the glamour of the many entertainments in the city,
there was also a darker side of poverty, crime and prostitution. "The city – with its pristine exterior, its soiled underside, its hollow entertainments –
provided the makings of an enormous duality: a two–sided mirror...a spectacle and secret life." (Bromber 1996: 62) One of the key parts to this design
by Haussmann were the wide tree lined avenues, which replaced the smaller streets that had previously existed in the city. "Haussmann's grand design
for the reconstruction of Paris was being carried forward by the Third Republic, and the city was now laced with wide, tree–lined avenues." (Schneider
1972: 134) In fact, the modern city of Paris is based on the city that was built by Haussmann and the modern perception of Paris as being the artistic
and cultural centre that it is known for, is chiefly based on Haussman's design and re–modelling of the city.
The art of Edouard Manet depicted modern life in the new Paris, as advocated by the writer Baudelaire. Charles Pierre Baudelaire was a writer in
nineteenth century Paris, a contemporary of Manet, who knew Manet personally, and who wrote about the idea of modern life. Baudelaire encouraged
the artists of the day to paint modern scenes, such as looking at the world around them for inspiration, rather than turning to scenes from the

St. Louis Art Museum Analysis
The St. Louis Art museum has one of the largest permanent exhibitions of a Max Beckmann collection in the world. He was a "German
Expressionist" and later became part of a newer style of German art which came to be known as "New Objectivity". During the last three years of his
life, he accepted a teaching position in the school of fine arts at Washington University in in 1947. Morton D. May, CEO of the May Company,
between 1945 and the mid–1950s began acquiring German Expressionist works, a movement which was not well known in the United States at the
time. May was surprised that Beckmann was working at the nearby University. During Beckmann's time in St. Louis they became friends. May, who
was painting at the time hired him to be his tutor.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason I chose this artwork was because it wasn't so much focused on the catastrophe itself, but the people's effort for survival. On April 15,
1912, the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. On its maiden voyage to New York, New York it collided with an iceberg. On board were 2,200
passengers, of those 1,507 died. Beckmann was said to be inspired by news accounts to produce this work which at the time was a current event. The
date of this art work is 1912–1913, and the media is oil on canvas. When we think of the sinking of the Titanic, we think about an unsinkable ship
going down. This painting is not about that. It is about the passengers and their fight for survival and what they must have gone through. The story
in this painting is about how they tried to survive and come to terms with the possibility of death. It is painted on a huge canvas 8 foot by 11 foot in
very dark and cool colors. The size and magnitude of this helps to create a most impressive scene. Off in the distance in the right hand corner you can
the still brightly lit Titanic still upright and powered, drifting near the iceberg which sunk it. However, the ship and the iceberg are not the focus of
what the artist is trying to convey. The struggle of the survivors and the lifeboats dominate the scene. In the center of the painting is a capsized lifeboat
with some of the surviving passengers

El Greco : The Greatest Spanish Painter Of The Era
Painting in Spain during the 1500's was being magnificently produced for patrons, churches, royalty, and private commissioners, which created an
intrigue for artists in neighbouring countries. A Greek artists by the name of El Greco (Greek name: Domenikos Theotokopoulos) has been known to
be titled as "the greatest Spanish painter of the era", although he was not from Spanish heritage. He was born in Crete, Greece in 1567 and spent
approximately half of his life traveling and apprenticing in Italy. El Greco had traveled to Rome, where he was influenced by the Florentine and Roman
Mannerism techniques. As El Greco traveled through Italy he worked alongside the famous artist Titian in his studio in Venice. Other artists El Greco
worked under include Tintoretto, Jacopo Bassano, and Veronese. El Greco's exploration of art through Europe finally brought him to the most
influential location of his career, Toledo in 1577. In this city, El Greco painted many of his most infamous art pieces of his career. El Greco was not
originally from Spain, yet he was and is categorized as a Spanish painter. As El Greco gained knowledge of the arts during his travels, his subject
matter evolved. El Greco was a man who was not afraid to push boundaries in his works or create additional components, which reflect him as the
artist in his paintings. The discussion of how El Greco's immigration from Crete to finally settling in Toledo was a crucial contributing factor in his
artworks and will be

Naturalism In Cythera
On looking closely at her sculpture it is seen that cupid's arrows are tied to her along with a garland of flowers. These are clear connotations of love.
Cupid can be seen sitting below the sculpture with his quiver down almost as though nothing has to be done to bring love in that area. He is seen
tugging the skirt of the lady sitting near him, as though he is urging her to fall in love with the man on her right, who seems to be trying too. On
following the coupled figures down towards the boat, is a conspiracy whether the boat bought the figures to Cythera or is taking them to the island of
Cythera. On closely observing the body language of the figures, it is noticed how they get closer and closer towards a state of intimacy. As observed–
towards the boat a couple is seen where the women is holding the man's arm of her own volition, she doesn't have to be coaxed anymore. The
progression of the figures almost looks like a form of dance. The second figured couple hold hands similar to the dance form in the 18th century.

The French crowd desired more dramatic and realistic art which led to the birth of this art form. The favourite themes the realism artists liked to
paint was scenes of urban life , scenes of rural life, street life , working class , cafГ©s and nightclubs. They also loved to paint nudity and sensual
paintings. This movement moved away from what was 'ideal' to what was simply 'ordinary'. Artists preferred painting real and ordinary people in
contrary to the previous movements where which focused on religious themes which always managed to look aesthetically appealing even if the figure

Comparing Johann Liss And Shepherd And Camille Corot's...
Johann Liss's Nymph and Shepherd and Camille Corot's Diana and Actaeon (Diana Surprised in Her Bath) evoke themes of female exposure under
male surveillance. Both artists interject two male figures in the background of their paintings, one, the shepherd and Actaeon, is named and the other
is unknown. Liss personifies danger and protection through his two men while Corot uses them as a narrative device to illustrate several moments in
one space. Liss is particularly heedful of the sinister nature he crafts through the vulnerable, exposed, and unsupported nature of the nymph. Corot,
on the other hand, creates a scene where the female subjects have a strong leader in Diana and are connected to and supported by their environment.
Both artists achieve these differing interpretations by diverging in their use of space, color, and relationships between figures and landscape. Liss
and Corot achieve very distinct goals through the two male figures placed in their works, but they both primarily place the men spatially behind the
women in positions of surveillance. Liss places the shepherd behind and overlooking the nymph; he is identified as a shepherd because of the crook
in his right hand. His profession is significant because it alters how the viewer perceives him. Without this knowledge, he would look threatening
because of the dark value of the color of his body and the positioning of his crook above the nymph, perhaps in an attempt to harm her. Despite this, the

Modern Art 1900-40
Comparison Paper
Modern European Art 1900–50
By the end of World War I in 1918, artist had a remarkable change in their styles of art. Two very pronounced artists, Fernand Leger and Max
Beckman, served in the war and impacted their art profusely. World War I was an era of industrialization in culture and in the economy, and as the
world changed, so did European Art.Leger fascination with the past and his vital experience in the war had a profound impact on his work. While the
war was undergoing trench warfare, Leger was one who almost lost his life, due to a mustard gas attack, which changed his imagery in art from cubist,
to what critics called "tubist". His emphasis on cylindrical, ambivalent forms, machine like imagery, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He took a different route than Leger when it came to expressing his artistic skill. He was an expressionist who distorted the body and space. In Max
Beckmann's, Reclining Nude 1929, Beckman decided to take it a different direction. He shows the woman in a different aspect. It seems to me as if
she is laying down on a reclining chair or mattress showing off her feminine body to her audience. She seems to letting herself open to the public and
he highlights this by his lighting gestures in the painting. Beckman's main focus is the woman laying down, relaxing; perhaps she is waiting on
company to come around and lay beside her as if she is saying "here I am out in the open". The iconography at the time related to what other artist were
doing and as a well marketed artist Beckman did the same. Although Beckmann does many things different then Leger, their interpretations ofcolor,
and distorted space had the same idea, but different views. In the painting, there seems to be a sign of light coming from the left side of the image
that really put emphasis on her body. It highlights her legs, up to her breast, and sides of her arms. Beckman's art seemed to be pasty, or chalky, and
put a lot of emphasis on his brush strokes. It is clear that he wants you to know where and why he puts the paint where it is. This is obvious in the

Andre Derain The Turning Road Analysis
Gianna Sorola Professor Reed Art Appreciation 1301 18 October 2017 The Turning Road, L'Estaque Andre Derain AndrГЁ Derain, born in Chatou,
France in 1880 was one of the few leaders of the Fauvists movement (although only lasting three short years). Playing a vital part in this new movement,
it enabled him to achieve recognition in all of his paintings. Fauvists was created in the early twentieth century, by modern artist whom emphasized
painterly qualities. By having strong, vibrant colors that represent realistic values. This style of art was inspired by the impressionists' era, they (the
founding leaders of fauvists) wanted to capture the impact of lighting and the atmosphere within. The word Fauve translates into "wild beast"... Show

Derain adds variation to the shapes to create several forms within the painting. The turning roads are created and flow freely for the fact that the free
form arc. From what I can infer, the last tree on the right was altered by making it thicker on the edges. Many of the forms are characterized by the
trees, bridges, buildings and people. Nevertheless, other forms can be considered non–characterized and just serve to increase the elegance of the
painting. Although, he avoided using three dimensional forms to the best of his ability to attempt of the curve road that displayed three planes. Across
the other forms, they are implied three–dimensional. The appearance of three–dimensional was reached by using tonal techniques, which were shading
and smearing. When AndrГЁ Derain was painting in a three dimensional style, it was to portray the trees and walkway in different angles. This allowed
the observers to see the foreground. Although, using one perspective style, the features throughout the background appear to disappear into the horizon,
therefore being unclear. The main type of lines used in The Turning Road are extremely pronounced, strong, thick and dark. However, through the
painting, some of the lines are thin in certain part of areas to avoid the attention. This would stimulate the different textures throughout the painting.
With the textures of the painting it would also trigger the motion of the painting. In the works of "The Turning Road,

Music and Painting
During the study of 20th–century Western music history in this class, I found out there are may same movements of art and music. I took 20th century
Art history as well so there is always the comparison of them in my mind. Music and art appear to be two different art forms. Music is both auditory
art, but also an art of time and movement. Music express musicians' feelings through sound, it will create images in the mind of the viewer for them to
have a variety of feelings, and to elicit in the viewer emotional resonance. Painting is a visual art, space art. It is static. Painters use lines, shades and
other forms to sketched out some figurative or abstract pattern. It provide visually to the viewer a strong impression and cause them reflect a variety of
emotions, resulting in aesthetic stimulation. Music and painting each is done through a different medium with different means of artistic expression.
They both convey people the author's expression of the content and emotion. Many artists themselves are both musicians and painters, such as
Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Leonardo da Vinci and extra. One of the great examples is Wassily Kandinsky. He is one of the representatives of Russian
expressionism painter. He also was a man versed in music. He is a friend of expressionist music composer, Schoenberg. By listening to Schoenberg 's
works, he felt "like a recklessly in front of the same lines in countless dance." Since Kandinsky

Landscape Painting : Landscape, Landscapes, And Paintings
Landscape painting has been developed and pursued by many over the centuries. Think back to the dawn of civilization, cavemen were painting murals
upon the cave walls of the nature that surrounding him and the animals that habituated. The term "landscape" derives from the Dutch word landschap,
which originally meant "region, tract of land" but acquired the artistic connotation, "a picture depicting scenery on land" in the early 1500s (American
Heritage Dictionary, 2000).
All my life, I have lived in small town by the name of Banta. It has the population of roughly 3,000 individuals, making it an extremely small town. I
am not even to sure I can technically call it a town its filled with farm houses and crop fields, rolling hills and trees galore. Banta, Indiana. As it is
only a half–hour drive away. There are many things that make this landscape unique; that let me know that it is "home." These range from the shape of
the land itself to the architecture of houses. One way that I know when I am home is when I am in "my hills," as I selfishly call them. They might not
be much more than foothills, but it is significant enough for me to notice a vast flatness when traveling. Indiana's climate can also help make it
identifiable. It falls into a humid continental region, resulting in it having both long, hot summers and freezing winters with snowfall. It also has a
moderate amount of rainfall. Due to this, Indiana has rather diverse weather patterns. Sometimes the weather can

The Chasseur
Caspar David Friedrich's work The Chasseur in the Forest, 1814, makes use of this technique as the subject is positioned at a distance from the
audience, walking away from our line of sight and toward the towering trees of a forest ahead. The work is typically romantic as the poignancy and
theatricality of the imagery attests to the visual impact of this motif and its complex characterization of the individual in relation to the natural world .
In light of this, Friedrich's work blurs the boundaries between landscape and portrait painting, effectively carving out a unique subdivision of these
disciplines which exists in both realms at once. However, the artist's humanistic technical and compositional tendencies solidify the position of this ...

What emerged in its place was a newfound appreciation of the ordinary and the real, in a nostalgic revival of the pre–industrial world through
depicting the life and work of peasants . However, this bourgeoning realist and naturalist preoccupation did not entirely destroy or even entirely
disassociate from the artistic tastes of the romantics. The temporal and contextual proximity of romanticism, realism and their affiliated stylistic subsets
culminate with widespread influence throughout Europe, providing some explanation for potential similarities in subject matter and aesthetics. One of
the key parallels between the romantics and the realists is their departure from urban living to regional, sparsely populated areas favouring natural
settings, once again emphasising the connection between people and the environment . However, the visual consideration of this relationship is
approached in different ways, and this is the pivotal point of divergence from romanticism to realism. The realist movement, with its empathetic and
attentive depictions of farmers, labourers and the working class in general, marked a new appreciation of simple, wholesome and humble living as
opposed to grand narratives of mythology and history or dramatic and formidable landscapes which largely

Summary Of Frames Of Reference By Jeff Wall
Jeff Wall reviews his decades of practices as a photographer in his article "Frames of Reference." In his prose, Wall explains how he learnt from
multiple forms of art and apply essential ideas embedded in these various forms to his work of photography. He characterizes two elements in his work,
the large and the representation of the nature and existence, which he extracts from the criteria of Western painting and utilize in his photograpic
works. To analyze the purpose of Wall's approach, it is vital to know how his understanding of photography works and practices developed through his
career.
Wall aims to test the nuance of photography works and enlarge the boundary of photography by applying different concept of other art forms to it. Wall
wants to make "photography with qualities in other art forms that held valuable indications for aspects of photographic making." It is crucial that this
combination of concepts and idea in Wall's works is different from the practice of photo collage. The documentary tradition of photography makes
photography distinct from other art forms. Wall refutes the approach of blending... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Literary Analysis Of Rene Magritte's The Son Of Man
Part of human nature is to find faces in images whether they are supposed to be there or not. So, Rene Magritte purposely made the face unseeable
behind the apple. In his painting, there is more than what meets the eye. The way in which he executed the piece is simple yet it still makes those
who see the art wonder what it represents. As like any artwork, successes and failures can be found in Magritte's art and how well it portrays the
meaning behind the piece. The Son of Man when examined closer, can be more interesting than one might think. Representation lies in every form
of art. There is the literal representation, and there is the abstract figurative way of viewing. Simply, the painting shows a man with an apple in
front of his face and a storm taking place behind him. Many think the fruit is referencing the tale of William Tell in which he shot an apple off his
son's head. Since in Magritte's painting the fruit is floating in front of him, this alludes to him about to be shot in the face. Others quickly think
religion inspired the work. The Son of Man sounds eerily close to Son of Man, which is Jesus' title. Also, the green fruit could be from the famous
tale of the Garden of Eden where Eve took a bite from an apple and committed the first sin. Neither of these are wrong, but Rene Magritte states,
"Well so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of a person... There is an interest in that which is hidden and
which the visible

Analysis Of Thomas Gainsborough's Portrait Of Grace...
Thomas Gainsborough presents a fabulous portrait of Grace Dalrymple Elliott. This is a full–length painting believed to be commissioned by her lover,
Earl of Cholomondeley in 1777 (Major, 2016). This portrait goes beyond a simple painting of a mistress. Rather, Gainsborough's portrait of Grace is a
study of striking and noble beauty versus a celebration of female sexuality as a commodity. Gainsborough accomplished this art piece by using several
uncommon practices in his portrait making techniques. The first is using a six–foot handle brush working directly on the canvas to give himself a
better viewpoint of his work. Second, Gainsborough often painted by candlelight, attempting to simulate the soft lighting in which the painting would be
viewed (Information for Parents, n.d.). Gainsborough was very successful in creating an atmospheric mood and unity between the backgrounds and
figures in his paintings. He displayed great skill in the use of color repetitions and contrasts, fluid brushstrokes, and highlighting. Grace, in her
full–length portrait, appears both self–confident and majestic as she leans forward on her left foot. She is wearing a simple, snug ribbon choker
around her throat that graciously drapes down the front of her chest where she clasps the train of her gown in a gesture of vulnerability. Her other

Modern Art Vs. Contemporary Art
Art overall is created and adored by numerous amount of people for many reasons, such as amplifying shared common visual language. The word art
often branches into many different movements and components. Modern art or Contemporary art is one those components; this specific genre began
mainly in the 1860's to the 1970's. During, this time period artists began throwing aside their own beliefs in a spirit of experimentation and the
bringing of new ideas. The purpose of Modern art is to beautify one's surroundings with intrigue, its often very diverse and cannot be easily defined
through a list of visual characteristics, artistic themes or cultural concern. Moreover, Modern art is often hard to understand by people because, unlike
Egyptian tomb paintings or Greek sculptures, it speaks to the dramatic social, political and technological changes of the last 50–60 years, and questions
many of society's values and assumptions. Also, Modern artists known for incorporating a great deal of abstraction into their works and
representational forms to convey their ideas more elaborately; Rene Magritte is one of those artists. In the False Mirror by Rene Magritte the artist
presents his viewers with an enormous lashless eye illuminated with luminous cloud–swept blue sky filling the iris and opaque, and a dead–black disc

home to collections of American art from the 17th century to present, African art, oceanic art, art of the Americas, photography and rotating
exhibitions. I had wanted to visit the de Young for some time and finally made my first trip there with my wife. We decided to time our arrival to
the opening of the museum and spent four hours exploring everything from the artwork on the grounds to the Summer of Love Exhibition. It was a
great day and I definitely felt my mind stretch to comprehend all of the artwork and make the connection to what I have been learning. In this paper,
I will share a description of the different styles of art I viewed, the experience of viewing art in person and how art is relevant today.
Artists and Artistic Style
While I enjoyed many of the works of art at the museum I will focus on a few pieces that really caught my attention. The first would be a contemporary
sculpture, Anti–Mass created by artist Cornelia Parker. Constructed from wood, nails and wire, Anti–Mass was made from the remains of a Southern
Baptist church which was burned by arsonists. Hanging in the air the church represented by charred wood appears to be exploding outward. For me
this was such a powerful statement and made me think of the violent persecution of African Americans in the south. Because it was constructed from

Art, in different races has a different interpretation and a different way to express. There are never be unified to one kind of way to develop because
the variety of nation brings variety of visual attitude. Even only in European art, artists' imaginative beholdings could be so distinct, when we compare
a Westernpainting with a Chinese painting, the contrast would be even more obvious. However, this two natures have their common kind of expression
too.
The following remarks will be analysing one Western paint and one Chinese painting. The Western one would beCaspar David Friedrich's A Wanderer

The, The Bark, And Birds Hell
Upon entering The Met museum, I was overwhelmed by the enormous sculptures and detailed paintings that filled each gallery. Though there were
many galleries, the one that captured my attention and led to be the focus of my paper is the Max Beckmann gallery. Max Beckmann in New York
sheds light on his connection with New York City. The art gallery displayed fourteen works in which Beckmann created during his time living in New
York. The gallery included many different forms of art works such as, self–portraits, mythical, expressionist interiors, robust, colorful portraits, portraits
of women, performers, and landscapes. Of the fourteen works, the three that I will focus on in this paper is the Self Portrait in Tuxedo, The Bark, and
Birds Hell. Max Beckman was a German painter, printmaker, craftsman, and sculptor. Beckmann enjoyed great success, receiving official honors and
awards. His success suddenly reached a turning point when Adolf Hitler came into power. Hitler resented Modern Art, and led in the abolishment of
Modern Art in Germany. Shortly after, Beckmann was disliked by the Nazi Government and was often referred to as a "Cultural Bolshevik". Cultural
Bolshevism was a term used by Nazi Germany to attack Modernist Movements in the arts. After enduring such rejection, Mac Beckmann focused his
experience of Modern life into Expressive images with an intensity of emotion and symbolism.

Virgin and Child (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), dated c. 1395–1400, and created much later, Antoniazzo Romano's Virgin and Child with Donor
(Museum of Fine Arts, Houston), dated c. 1430–1512. Within a hundred years, these two artists, as well as many others, developed pieces of grandeur
that have been the subject of speculation and analyzation to this day. Why? Because of their nuances that make them traditional in their own isolated
ways. Whether... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Straus Virgin and Child portrays a woman gazing at the child in her arms as if she is not actually holding him. As mentioned in the previous
paragraph, there is an extreme level of reverence being related to the child from the virgin, who seems to have almost no personal relationship with
the baby. In turn, the baby seems to be holding a dove in his hand in such a way that causes him to appear in perfect control of himself– complete
awareness of his own actions, despite his evident age. In the times of the middle ages, it was difficult to view Jesus as a close and personal being
because of the current religious system that was in effect. Religion often acted as a method of conviction and manipulation, therefore, depicting
Mary as the virgin with baby Jesus as the child in a loving embrace was unheard of. Having a personal and loving relationship with Christ had not
yet become accessible. Romano's Virgin and Child with Donor, on the other hand, was completely different. The virgin is seen lovingly caressing her
child with a gentle touch as the child clings to her in kind. The baby is held upright by the mother, being more realistic to the apparent age, and seems
at perfect peace as he presents the dove in his hand like a toddler might present a toy. With the comingRenaissance era, as well as the uprising of the
Protestant Reformation, a relationship with Christ became

Menil Collection
Visiting the Menil Collection and Contemporary Art Museum in Houston for the first time was eye opening. I never thought art was such a big thing. I
knew art was to be creative but other than that I never would have thought art would have meaning. From reading, "Ways of Looking" by Ossian Ward,
art comes in many forms: entertainment, confrontation, event, message, etc. however, having to pick two art works and compare and contrast them
was difficult since there were many to pick from. I chose "La lunette d'appproche" and "Suck My Tits," even though there completely different. They
both share a hidden message that need recognition. The Menil Collection in Houston downtown has a wide variety of art ranging from ancient art to
surrealism. Although there were all types of art, surrealism struck out to me. While trying to grasp the whole idea and why this was created. I came
across this one painting that froze me in place and drew my mind into amazement. The "La lunette d'approche" or "the Telescope," an oil based
painting on canvas created by Rene Magritte in 1963. Its contents grab me by the arm and drew me closer. Allowing me to escape into the darkness it
depicts behind the open window. It metaphorically represents how everything could be a front in one's eyes while beneath everything they are things

I Will Explore The Painting ' Wo Ist Ein Zigarrengeschaft...
Colour can be defined as the result of light hitting an object and its resulting perception based on the physics of sight or the eye. Artist have been
theorising and implementing colour and colour relationships for many years, and through many artist/art movements. Successful use and understanding
of colour can elevate a particular piece of art far beyond any that do not successfully implement colour and its various elements. For this essay I will
explore the painting "Wo ist Ein ZigarrengeschГ¤ft" (1954) by Jean Phillipe Dallaire(Fig 1–3). In this exploration I will examine aspects of this
painting which include Dallaire 's use of form, and colour. While also considering briefly Dallaire 's painting in in comparison to Jean Dubuffet 's,
painting "The Dandy"(1954)(Fig 4). Both paintings originate from the same era with two artist interpretations of colour and form, and two sets of
techniques. Before considering the painting itself I will examine the artist himself, as this will help in understanding his painting, "Wo ist Ein
ZigarrengeschГ¤ft"(1954). Jean Dallaire (1916–1965), is a Canadian artist who was known for his work as a painter, illustrator, and professor. His
work is considered as expressive with the use of festive images, shapes, colour and form, where the real and the imaginary come together in a visual
experience (Cheff, 2008). Jean attended art classes in both Canada and the united states, but his practice was built on mainly self teaching.

Alpine Landscape: An Oil Painting By Julius Lange
Alpine Landscape is an oil painting by German artist Julius Lange at 1866. It is considered that this painting might be based on sketches from 1856
or may date from a later trip to Switzerland. The painting basically shows a scene of mountains and a lake from a lakeside. Mountains and clouds in the
sky are presented in the background. On the foot of the mountain is a lake surrounded by disorganized rocks and plants. Some rocks are stretching all
the way to the center of the lake, where some people and their cattle are standing. The whole painting don't have any special focus because the artist

Grant Wood’s "American Gothic" Essay
Grant Wood's American Gothic is one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting brought Wood almost instant fame
after being exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1930. It is probably the most reproduced and parodied works of art, and has
become a staple within American pop–culture. The portrait of what appears to be a couple, standing solemnly in front of their mid–western home
seems to be a simplistic representation of rural America. As simple as it sounds, when looking deeper into this image, it reveals something much more
complex. The first thing to notice about this painting is how incredibly involved and realistic the brushwork is. The couple's faces are so delicately...

It is almost a reflection of the man's trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window of the house that sits in between both figure's
heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of the woman's outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the
house's window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The
pitchfork's slender prongs and the green stripes on the man's shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood
boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer's eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood's use of verticality in this painting
is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the painting. The man and the woman's faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really
see the reflection of the sun beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying glazes. Wood would apply a layer of oil
paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated numerous times. It was a process perfected by the 16th century
Venetian painter, Titian. The series of glazes seems to have created an overwhelming sense of depth and radiance within the paint. Wood's use of
glazes is not the only reference to early Italian painters. It is clear that Wood was inspired by Northern

paintings reflect the philosophy and value of the world? No matter you are eastern or western people, paintings are just not about the skills, but they

So I would combine them together as to compare with Chinese painting style more sophisticatedly. Abstract expressionism is the pioneer of western
abstract painting style. It was to use exaggerating brushwork to express emotions, so it is similar to Xieyi. However, the level of thinking may be quite
different. Most of the artists would like to express their personal feelings like happiness, sadness rather than national feelings by using
objects.(Seitz,1983) By contrast, Color–field painting was the development of Abstract expressionism and the purpose was similar in addition to the
fact that background was tremendously crucial. (Wilkin,2007) The only difference is that the subject matter in color–field painting is the color, the
object is not necssarily important.(Artstory foundation) Willem De Kooning represented the Abstract expressionism while Kenneth Noland
represented the color–field painting.Willem De Kooning was the prominent Abstract expressionism painters and urgely objected to the restrictions
imposed by naming movements. He said "I'm not interested in 'abstracting' or taking things out or reducing painting to design, form, line, and color. I
paint this way because I can keep putting more things in it – drama, anger, pain, love, a figure, a horse, my ideas about space. Through your eyes it
again becomes an emotion or idea."(Artstory foundation). It means he like the freedom of painting to tell people his emotions. Some of the famous
paintings were the women features. In the other way, Kenneth Noland was an significant painter who insisted on producing his paintings in soak–stain
technique. He focused on the choice of color, to determine how the background integrated with the subject to become a full subject.(Webb,2011)I will

Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?, is the self–acclaimed masterpiece of Paul Gauguins' career. It represents the culmination
of his ideas and beliefs that he acquired throughout his life as a painter. Many visual characteristics of the painting, such as the color, line, and light are

The idol also represents a change in color tones from the rest of the painting. It has been painted in a light blue, similar to the coloring of background
elements. According to Gauguin, this figure represents "the beyond," which is emphasized by its close relationship in color to nature. (Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston)
Although the use of line and light is not as defined as the color scheme, they still play an important role in the overall organization of the painting.
Gauguin uses curvilinear lines throughout this work with no right angles or sharp points. The outlines in the background are fairly blurry and some
of the lines blend into one another. In contrast, the characters in the foreground are comprised of precise, sharp lines. Gauguin goes as far as lightly
outlining the bodies with a dark line in order to give them a sense of depth. Light also serves to enhance certain aspects of the painting. Gauguin has
been careful in his use of light to create some areas of brightness and some of darkness. The central figure glows in the bright light, which shines
down on her from above. This light shows the importance of the decision of whether to pick the fruit or not. It is focused so directly on one area and
is void in the others.
The organization and relationships of the characters, animals, and background elements in Where do we come from? seem to be fairly unorganized and
random, but Gauguin has placed them in this order consciously. The painting is

example, through juxtaposition. Originally, the Surrealist movement came from the Dada movement, only is was lighter in spirit. The movement was
supposed to channel imagination. Surrealists believed that revelations could be found in everyday life. They had an impulse to use their subconscious
mind. With these methods, Surrealism went on to shape many other movements. Known as the most recognizable movement, many works are
eccentric, confusing, and unsettling. The artist's main goal is to make take the viewer out of their comfort zone. Many works involve nature in some

Look Pass the Label
A few weeks ago, I visited the Museum of Modern Art. As I was going through the second exhibition a particular painting caught my attention. Still
life with three puppies by Paul Gauguin was titled. My first encounter with this painting was through the title, which made me create negative
hypothesis on what the painting was depicting. When looking at this painting all I could think about was my lack of fascination towards animals,
especially puppies, while the person standing next to me was sighing and smiling about according to her "how cute the puppies are". Unlike that
person, I am not an admirer of puppies and as result I move quickly from the painting. However, as I made a second round on the exhibition, this time
when I saw the painting I was beginning to notice things like shapes, symbols and colors and immediately forgot about my initial reaction. I begin to
realize that there might be more to the painting than what I originally saw, but I have been blind from my initial judgments.
In my second observation I was able to look pass this initial judgments drawn by the title. The title "Still Life with Three Puppies" confirm my
assumptions about the painting and prevented me from continuing seeing what the painting is trying to depict. This name limited my thinking and
didn't allow me to see the painting from what it is.

Paul Gauguin And Henri Matisse
"Primitivism" was a cultural attitude that arose in Europe during the late 19th and 20th century in opposition to the increasingly decadent and
materialistic European culture. Rather than an artistic movement, "primitivism" is a European conception of foreign civilizations and lands as
"simple", less developed, and naive. This is an important distinction to make, because "primitivism" was defined in the eyes of the Europeans who saw
foreign civilizations as unsophisticated, indicating that the concept of "primitivism" is heavily biased in the view of the Europeans. Paul Gauguin and
Henri Matisse were two artists that were highly influenced by the concept of "primitivism," and some similarity can be depicted in their works such as
the use of female nudes, vivid colors, and artistic techniques. However, their definition and methods of achieving "primitivism" differ heavily, due to
the fact that the vagueness of "primitivism" allows it to be a self–defined concept. These similarities and differences can be seen through the two works
of art The Spirit of the Dead Watching by Paul Gauguin, and The Blue Nude by Henri Matisse, and the way they depict women in each of the pieces.
The first important similarity between the two pieces is the obvious use of the reclining female nude. The female figure was a popular subject matter
for the primitivists of this time, because society viewed women to be more "natural" than men, who were more "civilized." Society assumed that

The Purpose Of Art And Its Felicity
Joseph Anton Koch The purpose of art and its felicity lies both in its aesthetic quality as well is the instructive capacity of art, wherein the various
perspectives employed by artist 's help to understand the particular period in which the work was created and the influences that may have attributed to
the final product. The early 19th century in Europe was marked by a desire to return to the classicism of the Greek and Roman empires as it connoted
a sense of stability after the upheaval of the French revolution which had brought down existing social, political and economic structures to an end.
The work ofJoseph Anton Koch, a German painter who chose to live in Rome and imbibe the traditions of the classicists shows in his work a clear
attachment to the values of linear composition and idyllic subject matter and this is clearly apparent in his monumental workHeroic Landscape with
Rainbow, now a part of the European gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City. This work is an apt illustration of the manner in
which the neoclassical tradition of landscape painting became an important part of the works of European painters of the early 19th century as a
means of portraying the kind of society which people aspired to after the upheavals of the late 18th century. The heroic landscape as a painting genre
had achieved great popularity in the 17th century when artists like Nicholas Poussin and Claude Lorrain captured the beauty of the natural environment

Impressionism as a Avant-garde Movement
1.INTRODUCTION
This essay analyses the aesthetic and ideological underpinnings of the Modernist artwork, Impression, Sunrise of Claude Monet. The artwork and
Impressionism is considered to be a visual articulation of the avant–garde and the latter statement is explained. References to the writings of Charles
Harrison, Clement Greenberg and Wilhelm Worringer is used to theorise the aesthetics of modernity.
2.IMPRESSIONISM AS MODERN ART
Modernism is the heartbeat of culture, or as Clement Greenberg (1992:754) states, modernism involves of what "is truly alive in our culture" and it
includes more than just art and literature. Western civilization began to interrogate their foundations and progressed into a self–critical society
(Greenberg 1992:754). This notion began with the theories of the philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724–1804); he criticized the means itself of criticism
(Greenberg 1992:754). Therefore, Greenberg (1992:754) perceived Kant as the first real Modernist.
An avant–garde or modern movement is a movement that is experimental, artists push boundaries, are committed to change and are brave.
Impressionism slots in perfectly to the definition of avant–garde. The Impressionists took the first steps into modernism as a self–critical movement
(Greenberg 1992:755). To a modern understanding, the Impressionist paintings are among the most instantly enjoyable works of art (Thomas 1987:9).
The first Modernist paintings were produced by Edouard Manet (Greenberg

Courbet The Sleepers Essay
In spite of a plethora of artistic movements and periods, one trope has persisted throughout the course of Western art– the nude woman. The champion
of Realism, Gustave Courbet, was no stranger to painting the nude. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, the nude was no longer beholden to
the Greco–Roman tradition nor to the antiquated tastes of academic art. Courbet's realist nude was a rupture from the idealized figures shown in
classical sculpture and the convention of peinture d'histoire. The prevalence of perfectly constructed bodies, characterized by slender figures and
defined musculature, was overshadowed by a new take on the genre. Closer examination of Courbet's nude paintings, however, reveals a precarious
line on which the artist balanced in depicting a "real" woman versus an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5). The painting shows the languid bodies of two women lovers wrapped in a sensual caress. The artist juxtaposes two voluptuous women, one
dark–haired and the other with golden hair – a prevalent motif in nineteenth century eroticism, which is also echoed in another of Courbet's double
nudes, Venus and Psyche (fig. 6). In The Sleepers, Courbet exploits the nude as an erotic device to depict a scene of lesbianism. He does not conceal
the sexual nature of the image, but instead amplifies it. Every aspect of the painting exudes desire. The skin of the women is clammy; they are heavily
fatigued; their heads are nestled together in a gesture of intimacy – all of which is indicative of "an intense romantic struggle." Perhaps more so than
The Origin of the World, the viewer is left to examine the painting from a voyeuristic position. It is as if the viewer has intruded upon a private scene
of raw intimacy between the women. Thus, it is not merely the context of the scene that lends the painting its erotic quality, but how Courbet renders his

Why Is Franz Marc Important

  • 1. Why Is Franz Marc Important Intro: I selected the artist Franz Marc. Franz Marc was born in Munich, Germany in February 8, 1880. He went to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and is known for cubism and expressionism in his art. When I laid my eyes on Franz Marc's art, the first element of art that caught my eye was his use of vivid and bold colors. I also enjoyed the geometrical qualities (cubism) of his paintings. Your piece: My painting depicts a girl with fiery orange hair looking down at a little chick she's holding while her own wings are spread out behind her. She's standing on sand at the beach and dons a green beret, ankle boots, and a green coat that's flapping in the wind. I utilized most of the elements of art, i.e. line, form, color, and value. • 2. Fiercely The Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Among The... "Fiercely the Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Among the Heavens," was painted by Thomas Moran in 1875–1876. The artist's use of contrast between very cool colors to very warm colors attracts attention to the sun and it's brightness in the painting. The painting is vivid, yet impressionistic. The brushstrokes from the water to the rocky mountains are quite thin and small, but those of the sun are deep, rich, and intense. The brightness and intensity create a blinding and volcanic sun that appears to be setting the clouds above it on fire. Moran uses darker, inky colors in the water to mute the background for a moment and allow the viewer to experience the sun in its totality. As the viewer moves away from the sun and back to the water, he may notice the waves are fervently crashing against the mountain and against each other. The painting overall evokes an image of war and vengeance. Thomas Moran was influenced by many artists and ideas, but the most important works that influenced him were the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and a singular painting by J. M. W. Turner. Thomas Moran began his work with the Hudson River school in 1871 when he went on a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Turner's artwork. Though, Turner was truly an Englishman, he was known as "American Turner" by many artists, and was admired as such. In 1862, Moran traveled to England to see and study Turner's work. Upon seeing the work above, "Slave Ship," created by Turner in 1840, Moran was inspired by both the malevolence of the sun and the twist it had on the history of the painting. J.M.W. Turner "heightened the malevolence of the story by marshaling all the forces of nature–a roiling, inky sea, a livid sun, and an angry, incendiary sky–creating a setting fit for the Apocalypse". With this painting and the literature of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Moran moved to paint "Fiercely the Red Sun Descending Burned His Way Along the Heavens" as an homage to his favorite ... • 3. Manet Essay Manet Much of the art of Manet reflects the developments going on in Paris in the 1860s and 1870s. The rebuilding of Paris was being supervised by Baron Haussman, as much of the old medieval centre of the city was being destroyed so that the new city could be rebuilt. In his book "The painting of modern life" TJ Clark argues that modern art of the 20th century evolves from the art produced by Manet during this period of great change in Paris. Manet's scenes of Parisian cafes, bars and streets reflected the new Paris. Manet's work influenced the impressionist painters, who were a strong influences on the painting of the 20th century, so in this sense Manet's painting is the first modern art that emerged from the creation of the new Paris... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was one of the largest efforts to rebuild the centre of a city since ancient times. While there was the glamour of the many entertainments in the city, there was also a darker side of poverty, crime and prostitution. "The city – with its pristine exterior, its soiled underside, its hollow entertainments – provided the makings of an enormous duality: a two–sided mirror...a spectacle and secret life." (Bromber 1996: 62) One of the key parts to this design by Haussmann were the wide tree lined avenues, which replaced the smaller streets that had previously existed in the city. "Haussmann's grand design for the reconstruction of Paris was being carried forward by the Third Republic, and the city was now laced with wide, tree–lined avenues." (Schneider 1972: 134) In fact, the modern city of Paris is based on the city that was built by Haussmann and the modern perception of Paris as being the artistic and cultural centre that it is known for, is chiefly based on Haussman's design and re–modelling of the city. The art of Edouard Manet depicted modern life in the new Paris, as advocated by the writer Baudelaire. Charles Pierre Baudelaire was a writer in nineteenth century Paris, a contemporary of Manet, who knew Manet personally, and who wrote about the idea of modern life. Baudelaire encouraged the artists of the day to paint modern scenes, such as looking at the world around them for inspiration, rather than turning to scenes from the ... • 4. St. Louis Art Museum Analysis The St. Louis Art museum has one of the largest permanent exhibitions of a Max Beckmann collection in the world. He was a "German Expressionist" and later became part of a newer style of German art which came to be known as "New Objectivity". During the last three years of his life, he accepted a teaching position in the school of fine arts at Washington University in in 1947. Morton D. May, CEO of the May Company, between 1945 and the mid–1950s began acquiring German Expressionist works, a movement which was not well known in the United States at the time. May was surprised that Beckmann was working at the nearby University. During Beckmann's time in St. Louis they became friends. May, who was painting at the time hired him to be his tutor.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason I chose this artwork was because it wasn't so much focused on the catastrophe itself, but the people's effort for survival. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. On its maiden voyage to New York, New York it collided with an iceberg. On board were 2,200 passengers, of those 1,507 died. Beckmann was said to be inspired by news accounts to produce this work which at the time was a current event. The date of this art work is 1912–1913, and the media is oil on canvas. When we think of the sinking of the Titanic, we think about an unsinkable ship going down. This painting is not about that. It is about the passengers and their fight for survival and what they must have gone through. The story in this painting is about how they tried to survive and come to terms with the possibility of death. It is painted on a huge canvas 8 foot by 11 foot in very dark and cool colors. The size and magnitude of this helps to create a most impressive scene. Off in the distance in the right hand corner you can the still brightly lit Titanic still upright and powered, drifting near the iceberg which sunk it. However, the ship and the iceberg are not the focus of what the artist is trying to convey. The struggle of the survivors and the lifeboats dominate the scene. In the center of the painting is a capsized lifeboat with some of the surviving passengers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. El Greco : The Greatest Spanish Painter Of The Era Painting in Spain during the 1500's was being magnificently produced for patrons, churches, royalty, and private commissioners, which created an intrigue for artists in neighbouring countries. A Greek artists by the name of El Greco (Greek name: Domenikos Theotokopoulos) has been known to be titled as "the greatest Spanish painter of the era", although he was not from Spanish heritage. He was born in Crete, Greece in 1567 and spent approximately half of his life traveling and apprenticing in Italy. El Greco had traveled to Rome, where he was influenced by the Florentine and Roman Mannerism techniques. As El Greco traveled through Italy he worked alongside the famous artist Titian in his studio in Venice. Other artists El Greco worked under include Tintoretto, Jacopo Bassano, and Veronese. El Greco's exploration of art through Europe finally brought him to the most influential location of his career, Toledo in 1577. In this city, El Greco painted many of his most infamous art pieces of his career. El Greco was not originally from Spain, yet he was and is categorized as a Spanish painter. As El Greco gained knowledge of the arts during his travels, his subject matter evolved. El Greco was a man who was not afraid to push boundaries in his works or create additional components, which reflect him as the artist in his paintings. The discussion of how El Greco's immigration from Crete to finally settling in Toledo was a crucial contributing factor in his artworks and will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Naturalism In Cythera On looking closely at her sculpture it is seen that cupid's arrows are tied to her along with a garland of flowers. These are clear connotations of love. Cupid can be seen sitting below the sculpture with his quiver down almost as though nothing has to be done to bring love in that area. He is seen tugging the skirt of the lady sitting near him, as though he is urging her to fall in love with the man on her right, who seems to be trying too. On following the coupled figures down towards the boat, is a conspiracy whether the boat bought the figures to Cythera or is taking them to the island of Cythera. On closely observing the body language of the figures, it is noticed how they get closer and closer towards a state of intimacy. As observed– towards the boat a couple is seen where the women is holding the man's arm of her own volition, she doesn't have to be coaxed anymore. The progression of the figures almost looks like a form of dance. The second figured couple hold hands similar to the dance form in the 18th century. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Artists preferred painting real and ordinary people in contrary to the previous movements where which focused on religious themes which always managed to look aesthetically appealing even if the figure in the painting was subject to pain or loss. • 7. Comparing Johann Liss And Shepherd And Camille Corot's... Johann Liss's Nymph and Shepherd and Camille Corot's Diana and Actaeon (Diana Surprised in Her Bath) evoke themes of female exposure under male surveillance. Both artists interject two male figures in the background of their paintings, one, the shepherd and Actaeon, is named and the other is unknown. Liss personifies danger and protection through his two men while Corot uses them as a narrative device to illustrate several moments in one space. Liss is particularly heedful of the sinister nature he crafts through the vulnerable, exposed, and unsupported nature of the nymph. Corot, on the other hand, creates a scene where the female subjects have a strong leader in Diana and are connected to and supported by their environment. Both artists achieve these differing interpretations by diverging in their use of space, color, and relationships between figures and landscape. Liss and Corot achieve very distinct goals through the two male figures placed in their works, but they both primarily place the men spatially behind the women in positions of surveillance. Liss places the shepherd behind and overlooking the nymph; he is identified as a shepherd because of the crook in his right hand. His profession is significant because it alters how the viewer perceives him. Without this knowledge, he would look threatening because of the dark value of the color of his body and the positioning of his crook above the nymph, perhaps in an attempt to harm her. • 8. Modern Art 1900-40 Comparison Paper Modern European Art 1900–50 By the end of World War I in 1918, artist had a remarkable change in their styles of art. Two very pronounced artists, Fernand Leger and Max Beckman, served in the war and impacted their art profusely. World War I was an era of industrialization in culture and in the economy, and as the world changed, so did European Art.Leger fascination with the past and his vital experience in the war had a profound impact on his work. While the war was undergoing trench warfare, Leger was one who almost lost his life, due to a mustard gas attack, which changed his imagery in art from cubist, to what critics called "tubist". His emphasis on cylindrical, ambivalent forms, machine like imagery, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He took a different route than Leger when it came to expressing his artistic skill. He was an expressionist who distorted the body and space. In Max Beckmann's, Reclining Nude 1929, Beckman decided to take it a different direction. He shows the woman in a different aspect. It seems to me as if she is laying down on a reclining chair or mattress showing off her feminine body to her audience. She seems to letting herself open to the public and he highlights this by his lighting gestures in the painting. Beckman's main focus is the woman laying down, relaxing; perhaps she is waiting on company to come around and lay beside her as if she is saying "here I am out in the open". The iconography at the time related to what other artist were doing and as a well marketed artist Beckman did the same. Although Beckmann does many things different then Leger, their interpretations ofcolor, and distorted space had the same idea, but different views. In the painting, there seems to be a sign of light coming from the left side of the image that really put emphasis on her body. It highlights her legs, up to her breast, and sides of her arms. Beckman's art seemed to be pasty, or chalky, and put a lot of emphasis on his brush strokes. It is clear that he wants you to know where and why he puts the paint where it is. • 9. Andre Derain The Turning Road Analysis Gianna Sorola Professor Reed Art Appreciation 1301 18 October 2017 The Turning Road, L'Estaque Andre Derain AndrГЁ Derain, born in Chatou, France in 1880 was one of the few leaders of the Fauvists movement (although only lasting three short years). Playing a vital part in this new movement, it enabled him to achieve recognition in all of his paintings. Fauvists was created in the early twentieth century, by modern artist whom emphasized painterly qualities. By having strong, vibrant colors that represent realistic values. This style of art was inspired by the impressionists' era, they (the founding leaders of fauvists) wanted to capture the impact of lighting and the atmosphere within. The word Fauve translates into "wild beast"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Derain adds variation to the shapes to create several forms within the painting. The turning roads are created and flow freely for the fact that the free form arc. From what I can infer, the last tree on the right was altered by making it thicker on the edges. Many of the forms are characterized by the trees, bridges, buildings and people. Nevertheless, other forms can be considered non–characterized and just serve to increase the elegance of the painting. Although, he avoided using three dimensional forms to the best of his ability to attempt of the curve road that displayed three planes. Across the other forms, they are implied three–dimensional. The appearance of three–dimensional was reached by using tonal techniques, which were shading and smearing. When AndrГЁ Derain was painting in a three dimensional style, it was to portray the trees and walkway in different angles. This allowed the observers to see the foreground. Although, using one perspective style, the features throughout the background appear to disappear into the horizon, therefore being unclear. The main type of lines used in The Turning Road are extremely pronounced, strong, thick and dark. However, through the painting, some of the lines are thin in certain part of areas to avoid the attention. This would stimulate the different textures throughout the painting. With the textures of the painting it would also trigger the motion of the painting. In the works of "The Turning Road, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Music And Painting From 20th Century Western Music History Yaojun Song Mus114 Sam Music and Painting During the study of 20th–century Western music history in this class, I found out there are may same movements of art and music. I took 20th century Art history as well so there is always the comparison of them in my mind. Music and art appear to be two different art forms. Music is both auditory art, but also an art of time and movement. Music express musicians' feelings through sound, it will create images in the mind of the viewer for them to have a variety of feelings, and to elicit in the viewer emotional resonance. Painting is a visual art, space art. It is static. Painters use lines, shades and other forms to sketched out some figurative or abstract pattern. It provide visually to the viewer a strong impression and cause them reflect a variety of emotions, resulting in aesthetic stimulation. Music and painting each is done through a different medium with different means of artistic expression. They both convey people the author's expression of the content and emotion. Many artists themselves are both musicians and painters, such as Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Leonardo da Vinci and extra. One of the great examples is Wassily Kandinsky. He is one of the representatives of Russian expressionism painter. He also was a man versed in music. He is a friend of expressionist music composer, Schoenberg. • 11. Landscape Painting : Landscape, Landscapes, And Paintings Landscape painting has been developed and pursued by many over the centuries. Think back to the dawn of civilization, cavemen were painting murals upon the cave walls of the nature that surrounding him and the animals that habituated. The term "landscape" derives from the Dutch word landschap, which originally meant "region, tract of land" but acquired the artistic connotation, "a picture depicting scenery on land" in the early 1500s (American Heritage Dictionary, 2000). All my life, I have lived in small town by the name of Banta. It has the population of roughly 3,000 individuals, making it an extremely small town. I am not even to sure I can technically call it a town its filled with farm houses and crop fields, rolling hills and trees galore. Banta, Indiana. As it is only a half–hour drive away. There are many things that make this landscape unique; that let me know that it is "home." These range from the shape of the land itself to the architecture of houses. One way that I know when I am home is when I am in "my hills," as I selfishly call them. They might not be much more than foothills, but it is significant enough for me to notice a vast flatness when traveling. Indiana's climate can also help make it identifiable. It falls into a humid continental region, resulting in it having both long, hot summers and freezing winters with snowfall. It also has a moderate amount of rainfall. Due to this, Indiana has rather diverse weather patterns. Sometimes the weather can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Chasseur Caspar David Friedrich's work The Chasseur in the Forest, 1814, makes use of this technique as the subject is positioned at a distance from the audience, walking away from our line of sight and toward the towering trees of a forest ahead. The work is typically romantic as the poignancy and theatricality of the imagery attests to the visual impact of this motif and its complex characterization of the individual in relation to the natural world . What emerged in its place was a newfound appreciation of the ordinary and the real, in a nostalgic revival of the pre–industrial world through depicting the life and work of peasants . However, this bourgeoning realist and naturalist preoccupation did not entirely destroy or even entirely disassociate from the artistic tastes of the romantics. The temporal and contextual proximity of romanticism, realism and their affiliated stylistic subsets culminate with widespread influence throughout Europe, providing some explanation for potential similarities in subject matter and aesthetics. One of the key parallels between the romantics and the realists is their departure from urban living to regional, sparsely populated areas favouring natural settings, once again emphasising the connection between people and the environment . However, the visual consideration of this relationship is approached in different ways, and this is the pivotal point of divergence from romanticism to realism. The realist movement, with its empathetic and attentive depictions of farmers, labourers and the working class in general, marked a new appreciation of simple, wholesome and humble living as opposed to grand narratives of mythology and history or dramatic and formidable landscapes which largely ... • 13. Summary Of Frames Of Reference By Jeff Wall Jeff Wall reviews his decades of practices as a photographer in his article "Frames of Reference." In his prose, Wall explains how he learnt from multiple forms of art and apply essential ideas embedded in these various forms to his work of photography. He characterizes two elements in his work, the large and the representation of the nature and existence, which he extracts from the criteria of Western painting and utilize in his photograpic works. To analyze the purpose of Wall's approach, it is vital to know how his understanding of photography works and practices developed through his career. Wall aims to test the nuance of photography works and enlarge the boundary of photography by applying different concept of other art forms to it. Wall wants to make "photography with qualities in other art forms that held valuable indications for aspects of photographic making." It is crucial that this combination of concepts and idea in Wall's works is different from the practice of photo collage. The documentary tradition of photography makes photography distinct from other art forms. Wall refutes the approach of blending... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 14. Literary Analysis Of Rene Magritte's The Son Of Man Part of human nature is to find faces in images whether they are supposed to be there or not. So, Rene Magritte purposely made the face unseeable behind the apple. In his painting, there is more than what meets the eye. The way in which he executed the piece is simple yet it still makes those who see the art wonder what it represents. As like any artwork, successes and failures can be found in Magritte's art and how well it portrays the meaning behind the piece. The Son of Man when examined closer, can be more interesting than one might think. Representation lies in every form of art. There is the literal representation, and there is the abstract figurative way of viewing. Simply, the painting shows a man with an apple in front of his face and a storm taking place behind him. Many think the fruit is referencing the tale of William Tell in which he shot an apple off his son's head. Since in Magritte's painting the fruit is floating in front of him, this alludes to him about to be shot in the face. Others quickly think religion inspired the work. The Son of Man sounds eerily close to Son of Man, which is Jesus' title. Also, the green fruit could be from the famous tale of the Garden of Eden where Eve took a bite from an apple and committed the first sin. Neither of these are wrong, but Rene Magritte states, "Well so you have the apparent face, the apple, hiding the visible but hidden, the face of a person... • 16. Analysis Of Thomas Gainsborough's Portrait Of Grace... Thomas Gainsborough presents a fabulous portrait of Grace Dalrymple Elliott. This is a full–length painting believed to be commissioned by her lover, Earl of Cholomondeley in 1777 (Major, 2016). This portrait goes beyond a simple painting of a mistress. Rather, Gainsborough's portrait of Grace is a study of striking and noble beauty versus a celebration of female sexuality as a commodity. Gainsborough accomplished this art piece by using several uncommon practices in his portrait making techniques. The first is using a six–foot handle brush working directly on the canvas to give himself a better viewpoint of his work. Second, Gainsborough often painted by candlelight, attempting to simulate the soft lighting in which the painting would be viewed (Information for Parents, n.d.). Gainsborough was very successful in creating an atmospheric mood and unity between the backgrounds and figures in his paintings. He displayed great skill in the use of color repetitions and contrasts, fluid brushstrokes, and highlighting. Grace, in her full–length portrait, appears both self–confident and majestic as she leans forward on her left foot. She is wearing a simple, snug ribbon choker around her throat that graciously drapes down the front of her chest where she clasps the train of her gown in a gesture of vulnerability. Her other jewelry is a pair of small stud gold earrings and a layered bracelet of strung pearls on both wrists adds a unique touch to not over power or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The de Young is home to collections of American art from the 17th century to present, African art, oceanic art, art of the Americas, photography and rotating exhibitions. I had wanted to visit the de Young for some time and finally made my first trip there with my wife. We decided to time our arrival to the opening of the museum and spent four hours exploring everything from the artwork on the grounds to the Summer of Love Exhibition. It was a great day and I definitely felt my mind stretch to comprehend all of the artwork and make the connection to what I have been learning. In this paper, I will share a description of the different styles of art I viewed, the experience of viewing art in person and how art is relevant today. Artists and Artistic Style While I enjoyed many of the works of art at the museum I will focus on a few pieces that really caught my attention. The first would be a contemporary sculpture, Anti–Mass created by artist Cornelia Parker. Constructed from wood, nails and wire, Anti–Mass was made from the remains of a Southern Baptist church which was burned by arsonists. Hanging in the air the church represented by charred wood appears to be exploding outward. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, there is an extreme level of reverence being related to the child from the virgin, who seems to have almost no personal relationship with the baby. In turn, the baby seems to be holding a dove in his hand in such a way that causes him to appear in perfect control of himself– complete awareness of his own actions, despite his evident age. In the times of the middle ages, it was difficult to view Jesus as a close and personal being because of the current religious system that was in effect. Religion often acted as a method of conviction and manipulation, therefore, depicting Mary as the virgin with baby Jesus as the child in a loving embrace was unheard of. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork's slender prongs and the green stripes on the man's shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer's eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood would apply a layer of oil paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated numerous times. • 33. Look Pass The Label By Paul Gauguin Look Pass the Label A few weeks ago, I visited the Museum of Modern Art. As I was going through the second exhibition a particular painting caught my attention. Still life with three puppies by Paul Gauguin was titled. My first encounter with this painting was through the title, which made me create negative hypothesis on what the painting was depicting. When looking at this painting all I could think about was my lack of fascination towards animals, especially puppies, while the person standing next to me was sighing and smiling about according to her "how cute the puppies are". Unlike that person, I am not an admirer of puppies and as result I move quickly from the painting. However, as I made a second round on the exhibition, this time when I saw the painting I was beginning to notice things like shapes, symbols and colors and immediately forgot about my initial reaction. I begin to realize that there might be more to the painting than what I originally saw, but I have been blind from my initial judgments. In my second observation I was able to look pass this initial judgments drawn by the title. The title "Still Life with Three Puppies" confirm my assumptions about the painting and prevented me from continuing seeing what the painting is trying to depict. This name limited my thinking and didn't allow me to see the painting from what it is. In the still life with three puppies, Paul Gauguin painted the entire canvas white and then added some color by painting blue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Paul Gauguin And Henri Matisse "Primitivism" was a cultural attitude that arose in Europe during the late 19th and 20th century in opposition to the increasingly decadent and materialistic European culture. Rather than an artistic movement, "primitivism" is a European conception of foreign civilizations and lands as "simple", less developed, and naive. This is an important distinction to make, because "primitivism" was defined in the eyes of the Europeans who saw foreign civilizations as unsophisticated, indicating that the concept of "primitivism" is heavily biased in the view of the Europeans. Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse were two artists that were highly influenced by the concept of "primitivism," and some similarity can be depicted in their works such as the use of female nudes, vivid colors, and artistic techniques. However, their definition and methods of achieving "primitivism" differ heavily, due to the fact that the vagueness of "primitivism" allows it to be a self–defined concept. These similarities and differences can be seen through the two works of art The Spirit of the Dead Watching by Paul Gauguin, and The Blue Nude by Henri Matisse, and the way they depict women in each of the pieces. The first important similarity between the two pieces is the obvious use of the reclining female nude. The female figure was a popular subject matter for the primitivists of this time, because society viewed women to be more "natural" than men, who were more "civilized." Society assumed that women's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Purpose Of Art And Its Felicity Joseph Anton Koch The purpose of art and its felicity lies both in its aesthetic quality as well is the instructive capacity of art, wherein the various perspectives employed by artist 's help to understand the particular period in which the work was created and the influences that may have attributed to the final product. The early 19th century in Europe was marked by a desire to return to the classicism of the Greek and Roman empires as it connoted a sense of stability after the upheaval of the French revolution which had brought down existing social, political and economic structures to an end. The work ofJoseph Anton Koch, a German painter who chose to live in Rome and imbibe the traditions of the classicists shows in his work a clear attachment to the values of linear composition and idyllic subject matter and this is clearly apparent in his monumental workHeroic Landscape with Rainbow, now a part of the European gallery at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in New York City. This work is an apt illustration of the manner in which the neoclassical tradition of landscape painting became an important part of the works of European painters of the early 19th century as a means of portraying the kind of society which people aspired to after the upheavals of the late 18th century. The heroic landscape as a painting genre had achieved great popularity in the 17th century when artists like Nicholas Poussin and Claude Lorrain captured the beauty of the natural environment as a ... • 36. Impressionism as a Avant-garde Movement 1.INTRODUCTION This essay analyses the aesthetic and ideological underpinnings of the Modernist artwork, Impression, Sunrise of Claude Monet. The artwork and Impressionism is considered to be a visual articulation of the avant–garde and the latter statement is explained. References to the writings of Charles Harrison, Clement Greenberg and Wilhelm Worringer is used to theorise the aesthetics of modernity. 2.IMPRESSIONISM AS MODERN ART Modernism is the heartbeat of culture, or as Clement Greenberg (1992:754) states, modernism involves of what "is truly alive in our culture" and it includes more than just art and literature. Western civilization began to interrogate their foundations and progressed into a self–critical society (Greenberg 1992:754). This notion began with the theories of the philosopher Immanuel Kant (1724–1804); he criticized the means itself of criticism (Greenberg 1992:754). Therefore, Greenberg (1992:754) perceived Kant as the first real Modernist. An avant–garde or modern movement is a movement that is experimental, artists push boundaries, are committed to change and are brave. Impressionism slots in perfectly to the definition of avant–garde. The Impressionists took the first steps into modernism as a self–critical movement (Greenberg 1992:755). To a modern understanding, the Impressionist paintings are among the most instantly enjoyable works of art (Thomas 1987:9). The first Modernist paintings were produced by Edouard Manet (Greenberg ... • 37. Courbet The Sleepers Essay In spite of a plethora of artistic movements and periods, one trope has persisted throughout the course of Western art– the nude woman. The champion of Realism, Gustave Courbet, was no stranger to painting the nude. Yet, by the middle of the nineteenth century, the nude was no longer beholden to the Greco–Roman tradition nor to the antiquated tastes of academic art. Courbet's realist nude was a rupture from the idealized figures shown in classical sculpture and the convention of peinture d'histoire. The prevalence of perfectly constructed bodies, characterized by slender figures and defined musculature, was overshadowed by a new take on the genre. Closer examination of Courbet's nude paintings, however, reveals a precarious line on which the artist balanced in depicting a "real" woman versus an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5). The painting shows the languid bodies of two women lovers wrapped in a sensual caress. The artist juxtaposes two voluptuous women, one dark–haired and the other with golden hair – a prevalent motif in nineteenth century eroticism, which is also echoed in another of Courbet's double nudes, Venus and Psyche (fig. 6). In The Sleepers, Courbet exploits the nude as an erotic device to depict a scene of lesbianism. He does not conceal the sexual nature of the image, but instead amplifies it. Every aspect of the painting exudes desire. The skin of the women is clammy; they are heavily fatigued; their heads are nestled together in a gesture of intimacy – all of which is indicative of "an intense romantic struggle." Perhaps more so than The Origin of the World, the viewer is left to examine the painting from a voyeuristic position. It is as if the viewer has intruded upon a private scene of raw intimacy between the women. Thus, it is not merely the context of the scene that lends the painting its erotic quality, but how Courbet renders his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Personal Narrative: The Legion Of Honor Museum Me and my friends went to The Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. We went on a Saturday and it wasn't easy to get there, it was a hour drive and it was raining really hard. When we got there the first thing we saw was the golden gate bridge right next to the museum, and we also saw a water fountain outside the museum. At the entrance of the museum we saw The thinker which looked beautiful. When we went inside we were greeted politely but everyone had to take of their backpack because they didn't want us to accidentally knock something off. The inside wasn't that crowded there were only a few people there. The first exhibition we went to had a lot of paintings of flowers. There was this one painting of flowers which I personally liked it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first painting was of a women painting inside the painting, and it looked liked she was in Egypt, and in one hand the women was holding a compass and in the other was a paper with math on it. The second painting looked like a family traveling somewhere in the 17th century. Both of these paintings were representational art. And both of these artworks also tell a story in a unique way. And there also seems to be hidden messages scattered around these paintings but if you look closely they open a hole new meaning to the art. The second painting looked like it belonged to an artistic tradition due it being English. The first painting was called the Allegory of Geometry, and the artist who made this was Laurent de la Hyre. The second painting was called Landscape with Country Carts, and the artist who created this was Thomas Gainsborough. Thomas Gainsborough personality played a role in creating the art, he was a landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He also surpassed his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds to become the dominant British portraitist of the second half of the 18th century. After doing a visual analysis of the artwork I noticed that the Allegory of Geometry was more sharp than the Landscape with Country Carts, it had more detail in it. A formal analysis can be useful to tell an artist's use of aspects such as color, shape, line, mass, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
