Editor's Notes
Canada is a vast and diverse country, spanning from the northern reaches of the Arctic to the temperate southern regions. It is the second-largest country globally but is sparsely populated, with only a fraction of the world's population. The landscape features a wide range of geographical features, including pristine lakes, flowing rivers, towering mountains in the west, expansive plains in the central region, and lush valleys in the east. The Canadian Shield, a rugged expanse of lakes and swamps in the north, boasts some of the planet's oldest rocks. Canada's climate varies significantly, with the north experiencing Arctic conditions, the central interior characterized by harsh winters and hot summers, and the southern regions of Ontario and Quebec having a more temperate climate with distinct seasons. Precipitation patterns also vary, with the west coast receiving heavy rainfall due to Pacific influences, while the interior plains and northern regions have limited annual rainfall, especially in the Arctic and subarctic areas. Temperature extremes are notable, with frigid winters in the interior and scorching summers in the central south. Vancouver on the west coast experiences milder temperatures year-round.
Canada's wealth distribution reveals a persistent issue of income inequality, characterized by a substantial wealth gap between the highest income earners and the rest of the population. This inequality is influenced by factors such as regional disparities, asset ownership patterns, and variations in income levels. Wealth tends to concentrate in major urban centers, while rural areas face economic challenges. Government policies, including progressive taxation and social programs, aim to mitigate wealth inequality, but their effectiveness varies. Addressing these disparities remains a central focus in Canada, with ongoing efforts to promote greater economic equity and opportunity for all citizens.
Researchers rely on data from the Global Terrorism Database (GTD), maintained by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland. GTD characterizes terrorism as the intentional use of violence to achieve political, economic, religious, or social goals through intimidation or coercion by non-state actors, targeting civilians, and not being government agents. The database covers all countries globally, dating back to 1970, and includes events where deaths can be broadly identified. GTD employs rigorous methods, including keyword filters, natural language processing, and expert review, to identify and code terrorism events, making its assessments valid and reliable. Researchers can also filter data based on specific characteristics to tailor their analysis.
In December, Canada's Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 3.4% year-over-year, up from November's 3.1%. This rise was primarily driven by higher year-over-year gasoline prices in December (+1.4%) compared to November (-7.7%), attributed to a base-year effect where gasoline prices fell more in December 2022 than in December 2023. Excluding gasoline, the year-over-year CPI slowed from 3.6% in November to 3.5% in December. Additional acceleration in CPI came from airfares, fuel oil, passenger vehicles, and rent. Food purchased from stores also saw a 4.7% year-over-year price increase in December. However, lower prices for travel tours moderated the overall CPI acceleration. On a monthly basis, the CPI fell 0.3% in December, with lower prices for travel tours (-18.2%) and gasoline (-4.4%) contributing to the decline. Nevertheless, on a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, the CPI rose by 0.3% in December.
Known as “The Society”, Canada’s culture is underpinned by its tolerance, respect and community-orientation. Canadians are generally individualistic, yet they also emphasize and value everyones contribution to their community.
The Act grants the Minister control over the National Film Board's operations and establishes the Board, consisting of members appointed by the Governor in Council, with the Commissioner serving as the Chairperson. It also sets eligibility criteria, fee and expense provisions, meeting requirements, and the ability to create by-laws. The Act defines the Board's purposes, which include promoting film production in the national interest and advising the Governor in Council on film-related matters. It grants the Board certain powers, subject to Ministerial direction, and imposes restrictions on contracts exceeding specified amounts. Additionally, the Act addresses organization plans, oaths, temporary employees, the role of the Government Film Commissioner, financial provisions, and reporting requirements, emphasizing transparency and accountability in the Board's activities. This slide provides a concise overview of the essential elements of the National Film Act.
