The document discusses effective communication methods for children with learning disabilities, particularly those with autism. It describes how pictorial exchange communication systems like PECS can help reduce challenging behaviors and encourage speech. The author details how she created picture cards depicting common medical requests to help a nonverbal 13-year-old boy with autism feel more comfortable during healthcare appointments. Using the cards allowed the boy to understand and comply with examinations, making the appointments much less stressful. The author hopes to expand this pictorial communication method to other hospital patients with additional needs.
This document discusses the career path of dentistry. It provides a brief history of dentistry from its origins in medieval Germany and France to modern developments like water fluoridation. The author notes that while dentistry has long faced perceptions that it is less difficult than medicine, it actually requires similar long hours and hard work. Employment of dentists is expected to grow substantially in coming years due to an aging population seeking dental care. The author believes they are well-suited for a career in dentistry due to their artistic, detail-oriented, and stress-management skills developed through athletics. Their goal is to open their own practice and provide patients with perfect smiles.
1. Bullying can negatively impact children's self-esteem and mental health, and physical appearance such as teeth alignment is often a cause of bullying.
2. Research shows that early orthodontic treatment can significantly increase children's confidence levels after treatment by an orthodontist.
3. Parents often seek early orthodontic treatment for their children due to concerns about oral appearance and bullying, and orthodontists recommend treatment to improve dental health and alignment and prevent future issues.
There is a huge demand for dentists in India, as the dentist to population ratio is very low at only 1 dentist per 10,000 people. To become a dentist requires obtaining a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree after intermediate education focused on chemistry, physics, and biology. Dentistry involves maintaining oral health through diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of issues like gum disease. There are many specialty areas in dentistry that require additional training after the BDS. Choosing a career as a dentist provides benefits like financial security, flexibility, and personal satisfaction from improving patients' oral health and smiles.

to dental care and socio-cultural
factors. Furthermore, poor oral health
among children has been related to
decreased school performance, poor

millions of children suffer from tooth
decay of milk teeth and more than
fifty million school hours are lost
each year because of poor oral health.
Therefore, school based oral health

The human body functions with various organs responsible for performing different functions. But the mouth stands as an important part of the body. Teeth are very important to the human body. It is due to them that we can chew our food and obtain essential nutrients for our bodies. Therefore, teeth require extra dental care, especially when it comes to children or kids.

Teeth whitening has become a popular cosmetic dental procedure to enhance one's smile and appearance. It works by removing stains from the enamel through the use of bleaching agents or whitening trays applied at home or in a dental office. It is important to first consult with a dentist to determine if one is a good candidate and to address any dental issues, as some medical conditions or tooth sensitivity may prevent or limit the whitening process. The dentist will examine the teeth, identify the cause of discoloration, and create a treatment plan that may involve changing products or techniques based on the patient's response to bleaching. Thorough communication with one's dentist is essential for safety and effectiveness.
The document discusses India's National Oral Health Programme which was launched in 2014-15 to provide integrated oral healthcare. It aims to improve oral health determinants, reduce oral disease morbidity, and integrate oral health promotion into the general healthcare system. The programme also encourages public-private partnerships for better oral health outcomes. It notes that 72% of India's population lives in rural areas with limited access to dental care, and common oral diseases like tooth decay and gum disease affect 60-85% of Indians. The government is implementing oral healthcare through primary health centers under the National Health Mission and providing funds to states to establish dental units, with progress monitored by the National and State Oral Health Cells.
The Biggest Reasons For Early Dental Care EducationDr. Kami Hoss
Then it comes to dental care, a huge
part of the success has to do with
the person giving the proper
attention to his own teeth.
However, it is of utmost importance
to develop this habit in youth.
There are a number of reasons for
early dental care education.
Regular dental visits every six months are important for oral and overall health. Visiting the dentist helps prevent cavities and gum disease, detect problems early, create treatment plans, and improve oral health. Basic dental care through brushing, flossing and regular checkups can prevent costly procedures down the line by addressing issues before they become serious. It is also recommended that children see the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears to promote proper chewing, nutrition, speech development and a healthy smile.
Early childhood dental caries occurs in all racial and socioeconomic groups; however, it tends to be more prevalent in children in families belonging to the low-income group, where it is seen in epidemic proportions. Dental caries results from an overgrowth of specific organisms that are a part of normally occurring human flora. Human dental flora is site specific, and an infant is not colonized until the eruption of the primary dentition at approximately 6 to 30 months of age. The most likely source of inoculation of an infant's dental flora is the mother, or another intimate care provider, shared utensils, etc. Decreasing the level of cariogenic organisms in the mother's dental flora at the time of colonization can significantly impact the child's redisposition to caries. To prevent caries in children, high-risk individuals must be identified at an early age (preferably high-risk mothers during prenatal care), and aggressive strategies should be adopted, including anticipatory guidance, behavior modifications (oral hygiene and feeding practices), and establishment of a dental home by 1 year of age for children deemed at risk.
This document discusses early childhood oral health and the importance of establishing a dental home. It provides definitions of early childhood caries and the dental home. Untreated dental caries in young children can negatively impact general health and quality of life. The dental home aims to provide comprehensive and family-centered oral healthcare beginning no later than 12 months of age through activities like preventive services, risk assessments, anticipatory guidance, and referrals to specialists when needed.
1. Early preventive dental care is important for children's long-term oral and overall health. The document recommends establishing a dental home for children by their first birthday to provide comprehensive preventive care.
2. Untreated tooth decay can negatively impact children's health, development, and school performance. Early preventive dental visits by age one lead to 40% lower dental costs in the first five years compared to those without early visits.
3. The dental home concept provides continuous, coordinated oral healthcare from a primary dentist beginning by age one through comprehensive exams, prevention programs, guidance, and referrals to specialists when needed.
The document discusses school health services and their objectives, which include appraising student health, counseling on findings, encouraging treatment, identifying disabilities, and providing emergency care. It also outlines components of school oral health programs like inspections, education, fluoride programs, sealant placement, and referrals. A specific program called Tattletooth that was implemented in Texas is described in detail, including its philosophy, implementation, and evaluation approach. The concepts of incremental and comprehensive dental care delivery models are also summarized.
This document discusses the importance of oral health and its connection to overall health. It explains that poor oral health can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and even systemic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. The key to maintaining good oral health is brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing once a day to prevent cavities and gum disease.
Young chidren's oral health status in the saskatoon health region: 2006 2015saskohc
The document summarizes trends in oral health status among children ages 0-6 in Saskatoon Health Region between 2006-2015. It finds that oral health has generally improved over time, though children under 1 saw a decline. Oral health was better in rural areas and non-low income neighborhoods. Recommendations include increasing programs like fluoride varnish in urban low-income areas and establishing national oral health data for young children.
The health of the mouth and surrounding
craniofacial (skull and face) structures is central to a person’s overall
health and well-being. Oral
and craniofacial diseases and conditions include:
-- Dental caries (tooth decay)
-- Periodontal (gum) diseases
-- Cleft lip and palate
-- Oral and facial pain
-- Oral and pharyngeal (mouth and throat)
cancers
The significant improvement in the oral health of Americans over the past 50 years is a public health success story. Most of the gains are a result of effective prevention and treatment efforts. One major success is community water fluoridation, which now benefits about 7 out of 10 Americans who get water through public water systems.
However, some Americans do not have access to preventive programs. People who have the least access to preventive services and dental treatment have greater rates of oral diseases. A person’s ability to access oral health care is associated with factors such as education level, income, race, and ethnicity.
Objectives in this topic area address a number of areas for public health improvement, including the need to:
-- Increase awareness of the importance of oral health to overall health and well-being.
-- Increase acceptance and adoption of effective preventive interventions.
-- Reduce disparities in access to effective preventive and dental treatment services.

This document reviews dentistry for children with special needs. It discusses common oral health problems for these children like dental caries, enamel issues, eruption abnormalities, and gingival enlargement. These problems are often due to conditions like cerebral palsy, medications, or poor oral hygiene. The management of oral diseases in special needs children is generally similar to other children but may require sedation. Preventive strategies include toothbrushing adaptations, fluorides, sealants, prophylaxis and oral exams by a pediatric dentist. Overall, both general and oral health are closely linked, so dental care is important for improving quality of life in special needs children.
Improving children’s oral health in populations at risk saskatchewan minist...saskohc
The document outlines Saskatchewan's plan to improve oral health for at-risk children populations. It notes that early childhood tooth decay is the #1 chronic childhood disease in Canada, with over 1,800 children under 5 undergoing dental surgery annually. The province's goals are to reduce dental decay and support oral health in at-risk mothers, infants and preschoolers. The plan involves preventative strategies like education, screening, fluoride varnish treatments and promoting access to care, to establish healthy dental habits from an early age.
1) The document describes a proposed oral health promotion program called "Teeth 4 Tots" that aims to decrease dental caries in children ages 2-5 by strengthening parents' oral health education and behaviors.
2) The program involves developing a mobile app with features like cavity check reminders, a toothbrush timer, and a healthy snacks encyclopedia.
3) An evaluation of the program's effectiveness will be conducted through questions prompted in alerts with incentives provided to parents for their responses.

Children’s oral health is as important as our own. They are susceptible to teeth decay the same way we are, and it is important to pay attention to their teeth as early as possible.
This document discusses the career of an orthodontist. It describes orthodontists as dental specialists who diagnose, prevent, and treat irregularities of the teeth and jaws. Becoming an orthodontist requires 10+ years of education after high school, including obtaining degrees from college, dental school, and completing an orthodontic residency program. Orthodontists create healthy, beautiful smiles for patients by using appliances like braces, clear aligners, and palate expanders to properly align teeth and jaws. They enjoy satisfying careers helping patients and witnessing the positive changes to patients' smiles.

Dental therapists are oral health professionals who work under the supervision of dentists to provide services like preventive care, restorations, and minor surgical procedures. They are intended to expand access to care for underserved populations. Around 190 million Americans lack regular access to dental care due to issues like a shortage of dentists, especially in rural areas. Dental therapists could help address this access problem and improve oral health outcomes while also assisting overburdened dentists. Recent evaluations of dental therapy programs in Minnesota and Alaska found they effectively expanded access to care without compromising quality.
Kathryn Dundervill is interested in pursuing a career in dentistry. She is currently a Health Science major at Clemson University to help achieve her goal of attending dental school. Dentistry appeals to her because her personality assessment showed she is highly social, which is important for dentists who work closely with patients. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, she will need to take the Dental Acceptance Test, maintain a competitive GPA, and gain experience through shadowing and work before applying to dental school. If accepted, she will complete further education and training, and obtain the necessary license to practice dentistry.
A dentist is a person qualified to treat diseases and conditions that affect the teeth and gums. Becoming a dentist requires completing an undergraduate degree, then attending 4 years of dental school to earn a DDS or DMD degree. Dentists work in private practice or hospitals/clinics, performing duties like examining patients, restoring teeth, performing surgery, and more. The career offers good pay but requires high education costs and business risks. Employment is expected to grow as dental care demand increases.
The document summarizes dental services and resources in Nepal. It notes that Nepal has a severe shortage of dentists, with only around 1 dentist per 20,000 people. The majority of dentists practice in major cities, while most of the population lacks access to dental care. The top dental health problems are dental caries, periodontal disease, and oral injuries. Barriers to care include cost, lack of access outside cities, and cultural beliefs influencing some to rely on traditional practices. The government is working to increase dental training programs and professionals to expand services across Nepal.
Health advocates have long said that children should see pediatric dentists once every six months, starting at the age of 1.
That recommendation has become even firmer after recent studies have shown the negative effects on children’s health when dental care is not adequately provided, especially early on in life.
What we were taught decades ago about the importance of regular and early dental care is even more true today.

This document discusses oral health and access to dental care in the United States and Pennsylvania. It notes that over 47 million Americans live in areas with limited dental care access, including 17 million low-income children who did not receive any dental care in a year. It also discusses declining adult dental visits, a shortage of dental professionals in Pennsylvania, and reduced Medicaid dental benefits for adults in the state. The document provides tips on maintaining good oral hygiene, accessing low-cost dental care options, and understanding dental visits and screenings.
This document discusses the benefits of using a dental microscope for procedures. It notes that microscopes allow dentists to see small cavities and decay more clearly, finding more issues that need treatment. Dr. Reid, as a founder of the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry, relies heavily on the microscope and says he couldn't practice without it. The document shows pictures comparing views with and without a microscope and emphasizes that the microscope allows dentists to properly diagnose and treat issues.

12 Dental Specialties Which Specialist is BEST for you.pdfAnshuman Jamdade
The modern refined (soft and sticky) sugary diet has not only worsened our oral but systemic health too. The mouth has the second largest and most diverse microbiota after the gut and it became a constant source of inflammation. Tooth decay and gum diseases are one of the most common diseases affecting mankind. Teeth, gums, jaws, salivary glands, and oral-facial structures are interconnected complex members of the same family. Dentistry is not just limited to teeth. As everyone is a dental patient, dentists routinely encounter medical conditions. Many systemic diseases usually manifest in the oral cavity. Furthermore, dental tissues once damaged cannot be regenerated or repaired by themselves. Dentists have to be both doctors as well as engineers. You need special skills and knowledge about dentistry, medicine as well as engineering to manage dento-maxillofacial structure. Oral health is necessary to maintain your overall health and well-being. That’s why, dentistry demands extensive, time-consuming, rigorous training to master its art and science. Dental specialties are developed to improve the art and science of dentistry and the quality of patient care. Many patients are not familiar with dental specialties/specialists. As of this writing, there are twelve dental specialties / dental specialists. It is important for you to know about dental specialties, what they do, and which specialist is BEST for you.
Study Programs in Dentistry
Dentistry, in the field of study, offers both graduate (bachelor’s) and post-graduate (master’s) degree programs. A bachelor’s degree known as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) or a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), is a four-year study program that provides basic knowledge and practical skills in the field of oral health so that you can apply the same to diagnose and treat the patients of this field in an optimal way, as well as to educate people about preventive measures. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to practice general dentistry.
Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) is a post-graduate degree program in dentistry that take three years to complete. Individuals must have completed BDS to be eligible for the MDS program. MDS is a dental specialization course that focuses on the advanced study of a particular area of dentistry, much like a cardiologist or neurologist. MDS course takes three years to complete and includes coursework, clinical training, and research. Upon completion, post-graduates are eligible to practice as a specialist in their field as well as general dentistry.

Non-Removable Hybrid Bridge: The Best Alternative to Conventional DenturesDr. Kathryn Alderman
Are you looking to replace your teeth, but not wanting traditional dentures? A new revolutionary implant procedure offers a beautiful prosthesis known as “Teeth-In-One-Day” or a Fixed Hybrid Bridge or Hybrid Prosthesis. The hybrid prosthesis is the only treatment in dentistry that provides total replacement of teeth and permanently stays in your mouth. Also, a hybrid prosthesis is excellent in aesthetics, resulting in a dramatic improvement in quality of life for patients. This is not an implant denture, this is an implant bridge that stays in a mouth permanently and is the same as clear choice 4-on-1 or all on 4 dental implants bridge.
The procedure is also known as “implant retained bridges” or “one-day teeth replacement.”
The immediate delivery (you will never be without your teeth) of an implant-supported hybrid restoration is a revolutionary procedure that required extensive training. The hybrid prosthesis team includes a dentist, surgeon, and an implant technician.

1) An infection in the tooth's pulp can be painful, but if the pain goes away it does not necessarily mean the infection is healed as the pulp (nerves and blood vessels) can die, causing the pain to subside while other worse symptoms occur.
2) A root canal, if done correctly, should be painless as the procedure is designed to eliminate pain rather than cause it.
3) After a root canal, the tooth must still be treated with care through proper brushing and flossing as it remains susceptible to cavities and gum disease like other teeth.
