John the Baptist preached in the wilderness of Judea, calling people to repent for the coming kingdom of heaven. He wore camel hair clothing and ate locusts and honey. Many people from Jerusalem and surrounding areas went to hear him preach and were baptized by him. John baptized with water and said one more powerful than him would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. Jesus then came to be baptized by John, and when he emerged from the water the Spirit of God descended on him like a dove and a voice from heaven declared him to be God's beloved Son.
