Ocean freight negotiations are a source of constant tussle between shippers and their service providers. This is especially true, post 2008 where the freight rates have been on a roller coaster ride making it very difficult to work with fixed shipping costs. The volatility of the ocean freight rates may also depend on “who” the shipper has entered into an ocean freight contract with. We asked our social media community who they have their ocean freight contracts with.
Who is the Right Partner for Shippers? Part IXeneta
In this series of blog posts we are going to introduce pros and cons of working directly with carriers and freight forwarders to help shippers, BCOs make an informed decision and keep their cargo moving.
Fixing the Ocean Freight Market Overcapacity Issue – Is it Done Yet?Xeneta
Improving global demand for goods has resulted in a higher demand for global transportation. Inventory re-stocking, improved US economic conditions and Chinese demand for raw materials as well as for such commodities as food and beverage have helped prop up a sinking ocean freight market plagued by overcapacity and unsustainable rates.
As long as it’s not Hazmat, or the container is overweight, does it matter what is in the container?
The carriers still seem to care, but that ship has sailed with Moore-McCormack Line, LASH barges, and the concept of conference vs. non-conference carriers. Cargo was historically rated by weight or measure, with the ratings based on the type of cargo being carried.
Do You Know the Financial Situation of Your Shipping Partner?Xeneta
The downfall of Hanjin not only surprised a number of folks in the shipping industry, but also resulted in big shipment delays. As the now bankrupted container operator looks to offload remaining containers by the end of this month, we asked social media friends if they know the financial situation of their shipping partners.
Is the SM Group The Next Ocean Freight Disruptor?Xeneta
Korean conglomerate, SM Group, is aiming to be a top 20 container vessel operator by focusing on the Transpacific and intra-Asia routes. While many fear that the mighty Maersk will take over everything and claim world dominance, SM Group isn't scared easily. I admire their guts and for sure we do need more competition in the industry. I wonder if it will at all make a dent, however.
We had the pleasure to have Professor Andrew Lubin at the Democratic National Convention this week. There was a lot of talk about trade and the TPP, some supporters as well as many opponents. Here is his take and how this year's U.S election can affect trade.
Webster's Dictionary defines efficient as “productive without waste”. Do your supply chains meet this definition? It’s a fitting question to begin the New Year, so we posed the question, “How efficient are your supply chains” to our community. Here are the results.
Hapag-Lloyd: Is there Light at the End of the Tunnel?Xeneta
“The container shipping industry is approaching an improved business environment as a range of factors that support a better supply and demand equilibrium start to take hold. CN reaches framework agreement with Alabama State Port Authority, APM Terminals to increase the Port of Mobile's geographic reach and gain share in North American markets
The incident took place around 05:10 p.m. outside the project near Sadiyaat Bridge where number of busses (06 No’s) collided with each other resulted in damages to the vehicles (broken front glasses and bumpers). Fortunately no one injured in these busses. Police was called on and the road was cleared for public traffic.
Facts:
1. The drivers over speeding and over taking each other
2. Number of busses leaving the site at one time
3. Safe distance not maintained between the busses
Probable Root Causes:
• Poor perception of the risk by drivers
• Underestimating the consequences of over speeding
• Violating the company Safe driving policy
Lessons Learned:
• All the drivers or operators must undergo a comprehensive orientation training to comply with company safe driving policy and traffic regulations
• Speed control devices should be placed in the busses to restrict the drivers not to over speed
• Transport officers shall monitor over speeding and reckless driving and record accordingly

“In 2016, most probably, none of the 20 top companies will be profitable, consolidation will continue because small shipping lines will not be able to survive; the small to medium operators will be looking for a big brother to acquire them,” said Vice Chairman for CMA-CGM, Rodolphe Saadé.
While the technology for shipping might be accelerating rapidly, the pace of trade and more specifically trade growth, aren’t looking nearly as promising. Growth rates have been more than abysmal in 2016 only growing 1.7%. The rates for next year already have a dismal projection, dropping from a 3.6% to somewhere between 1.8 and 3.1% for the year. This marks the slowest rate of trade growth since the financial crisis of 2009. It's clearly why over supply in the container shipping market doesn't seem to be disappearing.

[Survey Results] How Do You Report Cargo VGM?Xeneta
On July 1 2016, the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) amendment requiring packed containers to be properly weighed and verified before being loaded on board a vessel went into effect globally. Shippers, ports, container lines and others all noted few disruptions, but rumblings of additional charges from some terminals, liners and forwarders raised concern from shippers. In our latest weekly survey, we polled our social media followers to ask how they report cargo VGM (Verified Gross Mass).
Is the Hanjin Grinch Going to Steal Christmas?Xeneta
The saga continues with Hanjin and we are definitely following closely. Yesterday's Twitter poll results reported that 50% of our community feels that the Hanjin debacle will increase ocean freight rates. We think so as well and the proof is, well ... happening. We have put our antennas out and the feedback from shippers is rather worrying.
Headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has one of the youngest container fleets currently in the ocean freight market as well as one of the largest in the Middle East. Founded in 1976 jointly by six shareholding Arab states of the Persian Gulf (Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE), the company has almost 200 offices around the world and covers approximately 240 ports and destinations worldwide.
Panama Canal Finally Opens & Ocean Freight Rates May Plummet? Xeneta
On Sunday, 26 June, the 9,472 TEU Cosco Shipping Panama was the first Panamax-plus container vessel to transit the Panama Canal. Opening some three years late, at a cost in excess of U.S. $ 5.25 billion, the new locks give container ships (neo-panamax) carrying approximately 13,000 TEU's all-water access from Asia to the important US East Coast ports and inland markets.
Can We Pull the Plug on the Trans-Pacific Partnership?Xeneta
The TPP is a hot topic with varying opinions in the U.S. While it’s not uncommon for congress to get a bit wishy-washy when it comes to global policies, the TPP, in particular, has proven to be a considerable thorn in the side. Here is another piece on things to consider when it comes to the TPP.
Is the Panama Canal Expansion Going to affect Freight Rates?Xeneta
With the trend of carriers employing ever larger ships in the global fleet, it comes as no small surprise that the infrastructure in ports all around the world are in need of some rather serious upgrades to be able to accommodate the new mammoth vessels. And, at long last, the Panama Canal will also be reflecting these new ship sizes as well.
How will Hanjin's Collapse Affect Ocean Freight Rates?Xeneta
Hanjin's big bump in the road has made for some interesting reading and writing for bloggers and press. As a company focused on the ups and downs of ocean freight rates, we can only but speculate what effect Hanjin's drama can have on prices. So, naturally we went to our community to check the overall feeling on the topic.
Is the Ocean Freight Market a Buyer's or Seller's Market?Xeneta
2016 has been a year of turmoil and upheaval within the ocean freight market – the formation of new alliances, mergers and acquisitions and a bankruptcy of a major ocean liner. With these changes in mind, we asked the opinion of some industry players if the ocean freight market is becoming a seller's or buyer's market. Nothing was conclusive, but it for sure made for some interesting discussions.
Each time a GRI is announced, everyone holds their breath in anticipation that maybe THIS time the rates will stick; however, hopes are usually dashed thanks to the glut of surplus capacity even though there are signs of capacity removal by some shipping lines. Besides, does peak shipping season even still exist?
As we reported in December 2016, there is both good and bad news on the horizon in 2017; it will be interesting to see whether or not the current rising rates are the vortex of a typhoon, or the calm aftermath of a tsunami. Certainly "imbalance" is the key word for this industry and trade as a whole. Shipyards are definitely suffering from a lack of balance.

The motor carrier industry is probably the most visible segm.pdfadelectricals
The motor carrier industry is probably the most visible segment of the transportation system in the
United States. The motor carrier is also the most significant element of the U.S. freight transport
industry. What factors account for the motor carrier's visibility and significance?
The railroad industry played a significant role in the development and growth of many cities and
geographic regions during the 19th century. What role, if any, have motor carriers played during
the 21st century in terms of economic development?
Compare and contrast the TL segment of the motor carrier industry with the LTL segment in terms
of infrastructure, cost structure, market structure, and operating characteristics.
In summary, it's time to understand your parcel characteristics as well as how the carriers will view
your business. If you can position yourself and partners to be a shipper that parcel carriers can
serve profitably, you will be rewarded with better discounts and have stronger negotiating
leverage. Source: Peter Moore, Logistics Manogement, March 2017, p. 12. Reprinted with
permission of Peerless Media, LLC. Introduction The motor carrier industry played an important
role in the development of the U.S. economy during the 20th century, and it continues this role in
the 21 st century. The growth of this industry is noteworthy considering it did not get started until
World War I, when converted automobiles were utilized for pickup and delivery in local areas. The
railroad industry, which traditionally had difficulty with small shipments that had to be moved short
distances, encouraged the early motor carrier entrepreneurs. It was not until after World War II
that the railroad industry began to seriously attempt to compete with the motor carrier industry,
and by that time it was too late. The United States has spent more than $128.9 billion to construct
its interstate highway system and the process has become increasingly dependent on this system
for the movement of freight. The major portion of this network evolved as the result of a bill signed
into law in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to establish the National System of Interstate
and Defense Highways, which was to be funded 90 percent by the federal government through
fuel taxes. As the interstate system of highways developed from the 1950 s to 1991 , motor
carriers steadily replaced railroads as the mode of choice for transporting finished and unfinished
manufactured products. Today, motor carriers have the largest share of U.S. freight movements
among all the pages of trapsportation.Significance In 2015, motor carriers moved 10.5 billion tons
of freight in the United States, which represents roughly 70 percent of the total U.S. freight
tonnage, and generated $726.4 billion in freight revenues, which represents about 81.5 percent of
the U.S. freight bills. 1 This means that, on average, 82 cents of every dollar spent on
transportation in the United States goes to the trucking industry. .
Difference between intermodal shipping and multimodal shippingHirfan Ullah
Multimodal: Multimodal transport (also known as combined transport) is the transportation of goods under a single contract, but performed with at least two different means of transport; the carrier is liable (in a legal sense) for the entire carriage, even though it is performed by several different modes of transport (by rail, sea and road, for example). The carrier does not have to possess all the means of transport, and in practice usually does not; the carriage is often performed by sub-carriers (referred to in legal language as “actual carriers”). The carrier responsible for the entire carriage is referred to as a multimodal transport operator, or MTO.
Intermodal: Intermodal freight transport involves the transportation of freight in an intermodal container or vehicle, using multiple modes of transportation (rail, ship, and truck), without any handling of the freight itself when changing modes. The method reduces cargo handling, and so improves security, reduces damage and loss, and allows freight to be transported faster. Reduced costs over road trucking is the key benefit for inter-continental use. This may be offset by reduced timings for road transport over shorter distances.

The Role of Private Off Dock Terminals on Port Efficiency (A Study of Sifax O...Dr. Amarjeet Singh
This study examines the role of private off dock
terminal in enhancing port efficiency in Nigeria; the
purpose of the study is to examine the extent to which
private off-dock terminals have contributed to the efficiency
of ports in Nigeria with respect to cargo clearance and
forwarding, questionnaires were administered and review
has been carried out to obtain primary data collection. A
total of 100 questionnaires were administered to
respondents and related literatures have been used for
secondary data. A survey design method was adopted for
the study. The statistical tools employed in analyzing the
analysis are simple percentage; tables and hypothesis were
tested using chi-square. Based on the findings, private off
dock terminal has not really impacted on Lagos port over
the last five years based on the cargo volume handled by
them. It also reveals that private off dock terminal is facing
problem in its implementation in Nigeria such as the
availability of railway connectivity and inadequate finance
and also the inconsistencies of government policies in line
with off dock operations. The findings also reveals that the
cost of clearing cargo at terminal is high compared to main
ports. To this end the study recommended that reductions
of chargers on cargo clearance and terminal handling of
cargoes should be looked into by private off dock owners,
government should ensure railway connectivity form port to
off dock terminals, policies should be enacted, which will
ensure efficient operations of private off dock terminal in
Nigeria.
1. Flag
By international convention, each vessel engaged in international trade must be registered in a spesific country, and therefore flies a spesific country’s flag. In many ways vessel is an extention of the territory of this country, and the flag state has the authority and responsibility to enforce regulations over vessels registered under its flag, including those relating to inspection, certification, and issuance of safety and pollution prevention documents.
Apart from that, the flag also determines the cost of operation and crew. The flag of developed countries tend to impose very substantial regulations on the way a ship is operated, in such areas as the composition of the crew on board, its minimum training requirement, its nationality, the work rules on board, the vacation time earned by the crew and so on. In addition, taxation can be significantly higher. In contrast, regulations and taxes for some developing countries are minimal. For example, operation costs of a cargo ship flying the US flag were 22.053 USD$ per day, whereas the same ship flying a developing country’s flag were 7.454 USD$ per day. Also same for crew cost, the US-flagged ship had to pay 13.655USD$ per day, but the foreign-flagged ships only paid 2.590 USD$ per day for 22 crew member.
These cost differences are also available for annual tax.
2. The term “flag of convenience” refers to registering a ship in a sovereign state different from that of the ship's owners.
Ships registered under flags of convenience can often reduce operating costs or avoid the regulations of the owner's country. To do so, a vessel owner will find a nation with an open registry, or a nation that allows registration of vessels owned by foreign entities. A ship operates under the laws of its flag state, so vessel owners often register in other nations to take advantages of reduced regulation, lower administrative fees, and greater numbers of friendly ports.
Countries attempt to influence, as much as possible, the flags of the ships that enter their ports. Although they cannot outright ban certain nationalities, they can prevent ships not registered in the country from carrying certain freight. Such as cabotage rules.
3. Shipping lines will charge container shipper either by published tariff rates or with negotiating contract rates with large volume shippers. Rates are determined per package or by weight, including cargo shipped in containers on a less-than-container-load (LCL) basis. In addition to the freight rate there are additional charges which the international logistic professional must be aware.
4. The Hague Rules of 1924 is an international convention to impose minimum standards upon commercial carriers of goods by sea. It restricts the liability of the carrier to SDR 666,67 per package or per customary freight unit. In 1968 the Hague Rules were slightly amended to become the Hague-Visby Rules.

4 Tips on How to Overcome Challenges Related to Procurement of Ocean Shipping...Xeneta
Procurement of ocean shipping services is the activity of sourcing and procuring not only the best ocean freight rates, but also the best shipping services from among the various carriers available in the market in line with the requirement of yours and your customers’ businesses.
FAK Developments Suggest Further Value From Long-Term ContractsXeneta
With the annual 2018 TPM conference in Long Beach having been and gone, Xeneta looks back at rate developments on the Far East - USWC trade and anticipates what it could mean for the coming months.
With ocean freight rates at all-time low. perhaps you believe you’re getting great rates and there’s no need to worry. In today’s business environment, companies are continuously looking for ways to reduce logistics costs but in order to identify potential cost savings, companies need to do their homework and utilize analytical tools to ensure they’re securing the most favorable freight rates. While businesses may actually think that they have optimized rates by only focusing on door to door rates, they often fail to realize that they may be missing out on other opportunities.
The Power of Data: Understanding Supply Chain AnalyticsXeneta
This is why supply chain analytics matters: Every day, every hour and every minute, countless packages and shipments are being moved around the world within never-ending flows of supply chains. These supply chains serve as the backbone of the world economy and, in truth, are what keeps the world moving. But consider for a moment the amount of data, information, and decisions that are required to make a supply chain not only operate but to do so effectively. While the end goal is to get the package from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes that make it all work.
Will Low Sulfur Shipping Fuel Costs Increase Shipping Rates?Xeneta
One of the most important events in the world shipping industry was the International Maritime Organization's October 27th, 2016 announcement formally adopting rules to cut the amount of sulfur allowed in bunker fuel. S&P Global Platts reported in September 2017 that Ultra low sulfur bunker fuel in Rotterdam, for example, hit the highest assessed level since the S&P Global Platts assessment began in September 2015. It also reported that bunker fuel availability at Rotterdam had been steady although demand is on the low level as the market hopes that prices will decline.
The maritime world was a constant lead in the news during the past few weeks; we followed the Houston-Galveston port closings, record rains, and tales of communal heroism during Hurricane Harvey, and then we switched to Hurricane Irma’s horrific winds that caused such massive destruction in the Caribbean, and Florida, with the Georgia, Florida, and Carolina ports now beginning to reopen. Let's not forget the current storm, Maria, who has so far left Puerto Rico 100% without electricity. And then, there is, Jose, threatening the US east coast.
For those following box carrier rates and vessel scheduling, this might not be the most joyous of holiday times for everyone. The difference between US and EU economic growth is reflected in the container rates from Asia to each market.
Why Digitalization is Raising the Bar for Transportation ProcurementXeneta
When it comes to determining the most effective of procurement companies, the crucial factor comes down to technology. While technology has always played an important role, it will be the digital transformation in procurement that separates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to world class performance and world class operations.
The Process Of Benchmarking Supply Chain & Ocean Freight RatesXeneta
To make sure we are all on the same page, let me define benchmarking from our perspective.
Benchmarking is “a measurement of the quality of an organization's policies, products, programs, strategies, etc., and their comparison with standard measurements, or similar measurements of its peers.”
The Reach of Intelligent Freight TechnologiesXeneta
The term “Big Data” is one of those BS bingo words everyone is touting in the freight world, even I have written a lot about it in the past. All in all, it is about applying technology or modernizing the way business is done in the industry with the use of technological advances.
ENS is an acronym for ENtry Summary Declaration.
ENS is required by EU customs to do a security assessment of all cargo entering EU ports
Carriers can use their discretion as to the quantum of the ENS charge
Scared About Supply Chain Cybersecurity? 5 Reasons You Aren't Scared EnoughXeneta
Many organizations and supply chain experts are concerned about cyber security. The risks stemming from supply chain cyber threats are real. In fact, the danger is more frightening and potentially harmful than we realize. Here’s why.
The global shipping environment is rapidly changing, which means that shippers have to stay a step ahead to keep pace. Given that new changes are occurring daily, whether it be an unforeseen obstacle, delay, or changes in the roster, it falls to the shippers to make sure they make their supply chain as agile and flexible as possible.
Globalization Picks Up Pace as Shipping and Logistics Market RecoversXeneta
We look back at a much different ocean freight market versus in 2016. Higher rates, consolidations, and new alliances are the trend while faster, more efficient and digitization are the keywords for global supply chains.
Whether you are an existing importer, exporter, trader or a novice in the shipping and trading business, you need to know the secret to understanding sea freight rates before you enter into the business.
How Can Smaller Carriers Compete Against Shipping Alliances?Xeneta
In the current economic conditions, there aren't many shipping lines that can operate entirely on their own; at least not on a global basis, as they cannot provide the required coverage all by themselves. Enter shipping alliances. However, there must be ways that smaller lines can offer value as well. We have surveyed our social media community and asked, "How can smaller carriers compete against shipping alliances?"
Is global shipping threatened by protectionism?Xeneta
While protectionism in trade may bode well for trade itself, does this protectionism affect or threaten global shipping? We asked our social media community “Do you believe global shipping is threatened by the rising protectionist sentiment?” Here are the results and analysis of protectionism.
The Megas are Coming: Containers Still Chasing CargoXeneta
While optimism and enthusiasm is a good thing, it could be said that containership carriers may very well have something else coming. There are too many megas coming into service, and this avalanche of empty boxes is threatening to upset the tenuous ocean freight rate gains of the past six months.

5. Ocean freight negotiations are
a source of constant tussle
between shippers and their
service providers. This is
especially true, post 2008
where the freight rates have
been on a roller coaster ride
making it very difficult to work
with fixed shipping costs.
6. The volatility of the ocean freight
rates may also depend on “who” the
shipper has entered into an ocean
freight contract with.
7. We asked our social media
community who they have their
ocean freight contracts with.
8. Our survey revealed that 33% of shippers
have ocean freight contracts with a
carrier directly and a collective 33% (25%
with freight forwarder and 8% with
NVOCC) had ocean freight contracts with
an OTI and 34% had an ocean freight
contract with a mixture of the above.
11. A carrier maybe defined as an entity who
undertakes to perform, directly or indirectly
the carriage of cargo by sea, rail, road, air,
inland waterway or a combination of these
modes, normally under a contract of
carriage.
Carrrier
12. A freight forwarder is someone who
undertakes to handle the movement of
goods from point to point on behalf of the
cargo owner and assists a customer using
their experience of global and local
transportation, global and local
infrastructure and freight documentary
requirements.
Freight Forwarder
13. A NVOCC, an abbreviation for non-vessel
operating common carrier, is an entity whose
functional activities overlap that of a freight
forwarder in some cases and a carrier in
some cases, hence may be defined as a
“carrier to shippers” and “shipper to carriers”.
NVOCC
14. An OTI is a collective term for a freight
forwarder and NVOCC who while providing
their individual services to the clients, are
ultimately dependent on the carrier for the
movement of their cargo.
OTI
16. Freight forwarders
that either access
NVOCCS, or is an
nvocc, specialize in
taking the hassle out
of logistics, and offer
up long list of value
added services such
as real time visibility,
guaranteed on-time
delivery, port-to-port
deliveries and more.
17. Shipping lines needed to imitate freight
forwarders and offer a greater range of
services, as well as differentiate their
offering from competitors.
Rolf Niese, until recently head of logistics
operations at British American Tobacco
18. Each freight business and shipment is different and there is no
fixed formula or a one-size-fits all solution for ocean freight
contract negotiation.
Therefore, in their own interest, it would be prudent for shippers to
look at which solution fits them best, whether it is a direct
contract with a carrier or a contract with an oti or a mixture of
both within their various businesses.
