This document provides information about an upcoming seminar titled "What's Teeth Got To Do With it? Oral complications of medications and life-saving treatments". The seminar will be presented by Shirley Gutkowski, a dental hygiene expert, and will cover the latest advances in oral care for patients taking medications or receiving treatments that can impact oral health. Attendees will learn how to effectively teach clients oral hygiene techniques, evaluate referrals for oral care, and understand how good oral hygiene can reduce illness. The seminar is aimed at nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals and will provide 3 hours of continuing education credit.
The document discusses the importance of continuing nursing education. It notes that nursing is a noble profession where individuals take satisfaction in caring for people's health. Continuing education can help nurses advance their careers and make their work more satisfying and profitable. Most hospitals offer continuing education programs to help provide nurses with opportunities to further their training while still working and scheduling coursework around their work responsibilities. Continuing nursing education is seen as vital both for individual nurses and for hospitals, which see it as a way to retain qualified staff over the long run.

This document summarizes alternative practice settings for dental hygienists outside of traditional general dentistry practices. It discusses how only 10% of dental hygienists work in alternative settings like public health, long-term care facilities, hospitals, and the military. These settings provide care to underserved populations and increase access to preventive dental services. Working in alternative settings can increase job satisfaction, flexibility, and opportunities for professional growth compared to private practice.
This document discusses dental caries and the management of patients at high risk for caries. It describes the restorative cycle where patients receive repeated restorations due to new caries forming next to existing restorations. Early detection of caries lesions and ongoing risk assessment of patients is important to help prevent disease progression and need for advanced treatment. Factors like diet, oral hygiene, fluoride exposure, and saliva influence caries risk. For high risk patients, treatment planning aims to continually reduce risk and monitor lesions.
This document discusses forming a guided mastermind group for dental hygienists. It would involve weekly online meetings over one month to share best practices, learn from each other, and focus on topics like periodontics, caries management, and airway health. The goal is for hygienists to improve patient care, advance their skills, and find a better work-life balance. The financial commitment would be $720 per group, which includes access to patient charts and career guidance materials.
Manual of local anesthesia in dentistry, 2 e (2010) [pdf][unitedvrg]Simona Belu
- Early humans experienced pain from injuries and diseases for hundreds of thousands of years, and sought ways to relieve suffering.
- Primitive methods included applying cold water to bruises and exposing wounds to heat from the sun, fire or warm stones.
- Around 25,000-40,000 years ago, early medicine men used smoke from fires and incantations to semi-asphyxiate injured individuals, providing a form of early anesthesia through inhalation.
Victoria Wilson conducted research to determine if dental hygienists would find a simplified communication toolkit helpful for aiding in oral health communications with patients. She developed a survey distributed to hygienists in multiple countries. The results showed that hygienists find communicating oral health challenging and become frustrated with patients who have persistently poor oral hygiene. They expressed that they would welcome a simplified communication toolkit to incorporate into practice. Wilson concluded further research is needed to develop a comprehensive toolkit that could be easily used in daily practice to improve patient oral health outcomes.

This document discusses improving oral health outcomes through a dental wellness plan approach. It begins by outlining the chronic infectious nature of dental diseases and how current treatment methods do not effectively address the underlying causes. It then proposes a dental wellness plan that would identify high-risk plan members through shared risk assessment, treat the infections causing dental decay through an evidence-based antibacterial coating, and differentiate care levels based on risk status. The goal is to contain costs and improve outcomes by shifting from a surgical response to managing the oral infections driving dental diseases.

Group dental practices allow multiple dentists and specialists to work together in one office, sharing equipment, staff, and other resources. This arrangement provides several advantages for both patients and dentists. Patients benefit from access to a variety of dental services and expertise in one location. Dentists also gain experience from collaborating with colleagues and can share costs of common facilities. Effective teamwork is important for the success of group practices and dental health programs that bring different professionals together to provide comprehensive oral healthcare.
This document discusses the philosophies and protocols of a dental practice. It emphasizes the importance of customizing each patient's care plan and ensuring smooth workflow between hygienists and doctors. Key aspects of treatment discussed include comprehensive prevention, non-surgical periodontal therapy using lasers over multiple visits, restorative concepts, and emphasis on oral hygiene. Clinical products highlighted include the Oral-B electric toothbrush, Crest Pro-Health toothpaste and rinse containing stannous fluoride and cetylpyridinium chloride, and a stannous fluoride gel for sensitivity treatment.
The document discusses various topics related to practice management in dentistry. It covers recognizing concepts of quality assurance and stress management. It emphasizes working collaboratively, sharing information, and giving/receiving constructive feedback. It also discusses adopting continuing education, evaluating performance, and using technology. Additional sections provide guidance on establishing a successful private practice, including choosing a location, building a patient list, setting fees, and basic furnishing/equipment needs. Ergonomics and minimizing fatigue are also addressed.

This document summarizes several studies that demonstrate the relationship between oral health and overall health. Multiple studies found that tooth loss is associated with atherosclerotic plaque buildup in arteries. Periodontal treatment was shown to improve outcomes for patients with diabetes such as blood sugar control and inflammation. Higher levels of C-reactive protein, a marker for cardiovascular disease, were found in people with periodontal infections or periodontitis. Reducing oral biofilm through practices like brushing, flossing and using xylitol was shown to reduce inflammatory markers and potentially help conditions like COPD. The document advocates for reducing oral biofilm and increasing access to dental hygienists to improve overall health and save on medical costs.
The document describes CareerFusion, which brings together people with shared passions and goals to further their careers. It provides information on several 2009 CareerFusion partners and attendees. 5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.
Are you looking for a long-lasting solution to your missing tooth?
Dental implants are the most common type of method for replacing the missing tooth. Unlike dentures or bridges, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone. In layman’s terms, a dental implant is similar to the natural root of the tooth. It offers a stable foundation for the artificial tooth giving it the look, feel, and function similar to the natural tooth.
