Optimized phased system update for reduced downtime
SAP HANA server and SAP HANA options
 A optimized system update reduces the system downtime for SAP HANA systems that, in addition to the SAP HANA
database server, also run one or more of the supported SAP HANA options. In the past, SAP HANA system update
performed the checks, binary switch and restart for each component consecutively, extending the system downtime. With
SAP HANA SPS 11, the checks, and binary switches are performed for each component at the same time, and all
components are restarted together. This process is graphically represented on the next slide.
 The optimized system update can be combined with the two-phase reduced downtime update released with SPS 10.
 The following components support optimized update:
– SAP HANA server
– SAP HANA accelerator for SAP ASE
– SAP HANA remote data sync
– SAP HANA smart data streaming
The optimized update execution mode is enabled by default if more than one of the above components is selected to be
installed or updated.

Support for XS advanced runtime
• SAP HANA SPS 11 includes an additional, new runtime environment for
application development: SAP HANA extended application services (XS),
advanced model. For more information about the XS advanced model, see the
SAP HANA Developer Guide for SAP HANA XS Advanced Model.
• The XS advanced runtime is handled by the SAP HANA platform lifecycle
management tools with the existing host role concept. The XS_WORKER role is
by default assigned to all SAP HANA database worker hosts, and the
XS_STANDBY role is by default assigned to all SAP HANA database standby
hosts.
• In addition to setting host roles, the HDBLCM tool also configures the following:

Other Usability Enhancements
 Enhancements to inter-service communication configuration
– Enable the internal network address parameter when the listen
interface is set to “global” to increase performance
– No restart after changing inter-service communication from
“global” to “internal”
 Resume action improvements
– HDBLCM now stores installation parameters in its own persistence
file so that upon resume the administrator is only asked for
passwords.
 Server platform check rejects HANA server installations on
SLES 11 SP 1
– SAP HANA SPS 11 and higher cannot be installed on SLES 11
SP1 due to GCC compiler runtime incompatibilities. For more
information, see SAP Note 2228351.

Other Supportability Enhancements
 Installation and update of the new SAP HANA cockpit for offline administration
– The SAP HANA cockpit for offline administration is a version of the SAP HANA cockpit that communicates with SAP HANA
using the SAP Host Agent.
– You can use it to perform administration tasks, such as starting the system or troubleshooting a system experiencing
performance problems, as operating system user <sid>adm.
 Custom configuration (INI files) of the SAP HANA system during installation
– Custom configuration can be performed during installation to reduce post-installation configuration and additional system
restarts.
– After preparing the INI files, save them to a local directory and run the SAP HANA server installation with HDBLCM on the
command line with the call option --custom_cfg=<path to custom config directory>.
 Support of new Eclipse Mac OS file system layout for the SAP HANA studio
– The installation path and the file system layout for the SAP HANA studio installation on Mac OS has been changed. The
SAP HANA studio is installed as a Mac OS application.
– The default installation path is: /Applications/sap/hdbstudio.app
