This document discusses what students want most from faculty based on research. The most essential traits for effective teaching according to students are being respectful, knowledgeable, and approachable. Respect is viewed as even more important than knowledge or engaging communication skills. The document provides many suggestions for how faculty can demonstrate respect, be responsive to students' needs, communicate effectively, and engage students in their learning. Overall, the key aspects that students value most are faculty that treat students with respect and are available and helpful.
The document discusses strategies for engaging online students. It notes that student attrition is higher in online courses than in-person ones. To improve engagement, professors should show respect for students, be responsive, knowledgeable, approachable, organized and communicate clearly. Using multimedia like images and videos can attract students. Regular feedback is important so students don't get frustrated waiting weeks for responses. Professors should also demonstrate enthusiasm to motivate students.
This document describes an effective way to teach vocabulary using reading material and stories. It advocates avoiding dictionaries in the classroom and minimizing teacher explanations so students must work to understand meanings themselves. When teaching vocabulary from a story, the teacher should ask questions to help students explore word meanings and relationships between ideas. Relating words to students' own lives personalizes learning. By choosing engaging stories and facilitating discussion, the teacher can help students learn vocabulary through questioning, guessing, and applying their understanding in new contexts in a memorable way.

Learning, like cooking, happens in stages, yet limited class time often prevents us from reaching the latter learning levels, where deep thinking begins. However, by using a combination of technology and pre-class assignments, students can soak up course content before they walk in the door. We will design our own pre-, peri-, and post-class activities as well as examine classes where technology and pre-class assignments have already been used to foster deep learning.
During this session, participants will:
1. Explore hierarchies of thinking and discuss which levels of thinking are most appropriate before class, during class, and after class.
2. Take one of their own most difficult course topics and design pre-class, class, and post-class activities for this topic to leverage classroom resources and foster a deeper learning experience.
3. Identify learning tools for implementing these pre-, peri-, and post-class activities.

The document discusses scaling classroom participation for humanities courses. It describes how science and math courses keep students engaged at scale through problem sets that provide automatic feedback. It questions how to take a similar approach for humanities classes, noting that multiple choice and essays are limited. The Parlor app is introduced as embedding discussion and lightweight quizzing in course readings to encourage active reading, start conversations, provide self-serve feedback, gauge reactions, measure participation, and promote competition to push students. The app helps teachers build reading lists, highlight insights, quiz students, and see participation metrics.
This document summarizes the school's methods for assessing reading progress in Year 2 students. It discusses using formative and summative assessments, running records, comprehension papers, and national averages to evaluate students. Benchmarks are provided for achieving reading Levels 2a, 2b, and 2c, which involve increasing abilities like decoding strategies, fluency, comprehension, and retelling stories. The purpose is to inform parents of how reading is taught and assessed so parents can support their children's reading development.

Ms. V teaches a class of 14 students with diverse abilities and challenges. She takes a holistic and learner-centered approach, focusing on each student's strengths rather than weaknesses. To motivate her students and address different learning styles, she uses a variety of technologies and multimedia in the classroom, such as cell phones, instant messaging, and video conferencing. She emphasizes collaboration over independent work, encouraging students to network, share knowledge, and help each other. For a science fair project, Ms. V made the curriculum more relevant and engaging for students by incorporating their technology skills and allowing choices in presentation format. Through her innovative teaching methods, Ms. V helps students feel cared for and succeed by their own abilities.
