What is an essay?
The word “essay” is defined in The Concise Oxford
Dictionary as a literary composition (usually prose and
short) on any subject.
An essay is a written composition giving expression to
one's own personal ideas or opinions on a certain topic,
but the term usually covers also any written composition,
whether it expresses personal opinions, or gives
information on any given subject, or details of a narrative
or descriptive.
Overview of an essay
Introduction - General statements and information about
the topic. Thesis statement which lists the main ideas in
the essay.
Body paragraphs - Supports the main ideas of the thesis
statement. Usually begins with topic sentences.
Conclusion - Brief summary of main points of the essay.
Types of essays
Descriptive essay - Describes an object or animation
using different adjectives.
Narrative essay - It is in the form of a story with the
narrator explaining events that took place which try to
prove a point or an initial thesis.
Argumentative essay - A form of essay that tries to prove
a point by supporting it with evidence.
Expository essay - An explanation essay. Cause and
effect. Compare and contrast. Classification. Sequencing.

Persuasive essay - An essay in which you try to convince
the reader into believing one point over another point.
Personal essay - An informal essay that explains a
persoanl opinion about any topic.
Informal essay - Type of essay that allows the writer to go
a bit off topicand not use proper evidence. Allows humour
and the opinion of the writer.
Formal essay - An essay with na subject that has to be
explained or proven with concrete evidence and proper
essay format.
