A mutant is an organism that has a changed DNA sequence due to errors during DNA replication or exposure to mutagens in the environment. When DNA is damaged, bacteria have a repair system called the SOS response where over 40 genes are activated to halt cell division and repair DNA breaks before replication resumes. If the DNA damage is not repaired, it may result in a permanent change in the DNA sequence known as a mutation that can be passed on to future generations.
