Game studies is the interdisciplinary study of games from social science and humanities perspectives, examining games as a phenomenon in their own right. It has two main branches - narratology, which views games as storytelling, and ludology, which sees games first as systems defined by rules and play. Despite the economic and cultural significance of games, particularly video games, there has been little academic research on them. Game studies aims to address this gap by establishing a research community to critically examine games and their impacts.
