Presidents Message
To all my distinguished colleagues and friends,
I would first like to thank the members of the District of Columbia Health
Information Management Association for the opportunity to serve as President for the
year of 2014. During that time, I have made many new wonderful friends who I hope to
remain in constant communication with throughout the many years to come.
Briefly, just to give you a recap on last year achievements, I stated to you that I was
committed to providing educational opportunities for our members. Well, I take great
pleasure in saying that we held a variety of educational programs for our meeting which
focused on the different aspects of health information management. We also held, for the
first time, a networking happy hour in September. And, for 2015, we launched our
quarterly business meeting program.
Again, I enjoyed working with our board of directors who volunteered their talents
and skills to keep the District of Columbia Health Information Management moving and
especially to all of you.
Thank you,
Jeanne Mansell, RHIT, RAC-CT, CHTS-IM, CHTS-IS
Outgoing DCHIMA President, 2014-2015
Incoming Presidents Message
Thank you for the opportunity to lead DCHIMA. I first want to thank Jeanne
Mansell and the outgoing Board of Directors, for all the hard work they’ve done over the
past year. The joint MdHIMA/DCHIMA Annual Meeting is our first large-scale partner-
ship with MdHIMA and we hope to continue to partner on other events to offer our
members the best value for their state association dues. The HIM field is rapidly chang-
ing and it is DCHIMA’s challenge to offer our members educational opportunities to learn
and grow with the profession. Our student members continue to be very important in the
strategic plan, as evidenced by scholarship, volunteer opportunities at meetings, and the
poster presentation event at the Annual Meeting.
Moving forward the Board will continue building on last year’s major goals:
educational program excellence, membership growth, and student involvement.
We are a small state association filled with motivated, talented HIM professionals. I hope
you will get involved – volunteer to help with a meeting, run for office, or serve in an
appointed position. We want to hear your ideas and get you involved in creating value for
our membership.
Corinne Smith, MBA RHIA CCS CDIP
DCHIMA 2014-2015 President Elect
Presidents Message
This year sure has flown by! I want to thank the members of MdHIMA for giving
me the opportunity to serve as the President of our association. Being involved at this
level has truly been an eye opening experience which has allowed me to interact with
many talented individuals that share the same passion in leading our industry.
Our collaboration with DCHIMA has been a great accomplishment. This invites
more knowledge and networking opportunities to MdHIMA where we can grow with
our neighbor association. I hope that many of you share this partnership as I have.
I would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of our educational ses-
sions organized by the Education and Data Quality committees. They have spent a
lot of time ensuring the topics are interesting as well as educational when it comes to
preparation for ICD-10.
The million dollar question- Is the ride on the ICD-10 roller coaster over?
We would like to hope so with the recent news of the SGR bill being passed with no
delay language for ICD-10 inserted. But it remains to be seen. All we can do now is
continue to prepare for the go live date of 10/1/15.
I ask and encourage you to join a committee and get involved. Share your ideas
with the board members and visit our website to keep up with the latest industry
news. I received many valuable emails through the website this year which only con-
tributes to the success of our organization.
In closing, I would like to thank the 2014-2015 board and committee members
for their involvement this year and supporting me and the association. I will continue
on as the Past President and share my support as Tasha takes the lead!
Thank you,
Sarah Allinson, RHIA

You know your organization. You know the challenges it will face because of ICD-10, coder shortages,
and other changes brought about by healthcare reform. You live it every day—you don’t need to hear
about the problem—you are ready for solutions. The 3M 360 Encompass System is your solution as
the only automated end-to-end coding and documentation improvement system built on 3M logic for
grouping and reimbursement. Operationally, that can translate to greater efficiencies, lower costs,
more accurate reimbursement, and a better case mix index.
3M 360 Encompass delivers breakthrough integration of clinical documentation improvement for
clinicians, Computer-Assisted Coding for coders and monitoring and reporting for administrators that
is up-to-the-minute. And, knowing that 360 Encompass System is the only computer-assisted coding
solution with the 3M™
Coding and Reimbursement System fully integrated gives you confidence that
your coders can realize the productivity gains from CAC and natural language processing technology,
without sacrificing the ability to understand the logic behind each auto-suggested code.

  • 8. Presidents Message To all my distinguished colleagues and friends, I would first like to thank the members of the District of Columbia Health Information Management Association for the opportunity to serve as President for the year of 2014. During that time, I have made many new wonderful friends who I hope to remain in constant communication with throughout the many years to come. Briefly, just to give you a recap on last year achievements, I stated to you that I was committed to providing educational opportunities for our members. Well, I take great pleasure in saying that we held a variety of educational programs for our meeting which focused on the different aspects of health information management. We also held, for the first time, a networking happy hour in September. And, for 2015, we launched our quarterly business meeting program. Again, I enjoyed working with our board of directors who volunteered their talents and skills to keep the District of Columbia Health Information Management moving and especially to all of you. Thank you, Jeanne Mansell, RHIT, RAC-CT, CHTS-IM, CHTS-IS Outgoing DCHIMA President, 2014-2015 Incoming Presidents Message Thank you for the opportunity to lead DCHIMA. I first want to thank Jeanne Mansell and the outgoing Board of Directors, for all the hard work they’ve done over the past year. The joint MdHIMA/DCHIMA Annual Meeting is our first large-scale partner- ship with MdHIMA and we hope to continue to partner on other events to offer our members the best value for their state association dues. The HIM field is rapidly chang- ing and it is DCHIMA’s challenge to offer our members educational opportunities to learn and grow with the profession. Our student members continue to be very important in the strategic plan, as evidenced by scholarship, volunteer opportunities at meetings, and the poster presentation event at the Annual Meeting. Moving forward the Board will continue building on last year’s major goals: educational program excellence, membership growth, and student involvement. We are a small state association filled with motivated, talented HIM professionals. I hope you will get involved – volunteer to help with a meeting, run for office, or serve in an appointed position. We want to hear your ideas and get you involved in creating value for our membership. Corinne Smith, MBA RHIA CCS CDIP DCHIMA 2014-2015 President Elect
  • 9. Presidents Message This year sure has flown by! I want to thank the members of MdHIMA for giving me the opportunity to serve as the President of our association. Being involved at this level has truly been an eye opening experience which has allowed me to interact with many talented individuals that share the same passion in leading our industry. Our collaboration with DCHIMA has been a great accomplishment. This invites more knowledge and networking opportunities to MdHIMA where we can grow with our neighbor association. I hope that many of you share this partnership as I have. I would like to encourage everyone to take advantage of our educational ses- sions organized by the Education and Data Quality committees. They have spent a lot of time ensuring the topics are interesting as well as educational when it comes to preparation for ICD-10. The million dollar question- Is the ride on the ICD-10 roller coaster over? We would like to hope so with the recent news of the SGR bill being passed with no delay language for ICD-10 inserted. But it remains to be seen. All we can do now is continue to prepare for the go live date of 10/1/15. I ask and encourage you to join a committee and get involved. Share your ideas with the board members and visit our website to keep up with the latest industry news. I received many valuable emails through the website this year which only con- tributes to the success of our organization. In closing, I would like to thank the 2014-2015 board and committee members for their involvement this year and supporting me and the association. I will continue on as the Past President and share my support as Tasha takes the lead! Thank you, Sarah Allinson, RHIA Outgoing MdHIMA President
