WEST LA COMMUNITY OF SCHOOLS
As we work to make LA Unified a more transparent, student-centered system that improves academic
outcomes and supports the overall wellbeing of our kids, check out some highlights of the progress we've
made for the school communities in West Los Angeles and the Palisades over the past few years.
Served over 140 million free meals and other basic necessities to kids and families in need at our 63 "Grab and Go"
meal centers while schools were closed during the pandemic (pictured)
Began a Youth Advisory Council to hear
from student leaders at all Board District 4
high schools about their perspective and
ideas for strengthening their educational
experience (pictured)
Assisted community partners to receive
long-term leases with the District providing
University High and Emerson Middle School
with additional funding for school
programs
Eliminated bureaucratic hurdles to make it
easier for booster clubs to use school
facilities
2. Expanded early education opportunities by supporting the addition of a TK program at Westwood Elementary
Coordinated a partnership between Brentwood Science Elementary and the Brentwood Community Council to promote
the school and provide community support, including the donations of backpacks filled with school supplies
Funded new secure entry systems to ensure campus safety at Canyon Elementary, Nora Sterry Elementary, Emerson
Middle, Paul Revere Middle, Richland Elementary, Topanga Elementary, and Warner Elementary (pictured)

Funded one of the District's "SEEDS" programs,

Supported LA Works efforts on their annual Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to bring hundreds of
volunteers to paint and beautify local school
campuses, and continue their volunteer efforts
virtually once the pandemic began
Funded school site upgrades to ensure that
campuses are fully accessible to all students at Paul
Revere Middle School and Richland Ave Elementary
Supported clean-up efforts and funded necessary
repairs after flooding at Palisades Elementary
3. Making Progress for the West LA Community of Schools
Supported the Class of 2020 graduates during the pandemic with gifts, virtual ceremony speeches, and socially
distant or drive-through events at University High, Magnolia Science Academy 4, and Palisades High, and
successfully advocated for safe, in-person graduation ceremonies and celebrations for the Class of 2021 (pictured)
Approved a new “Whole Child” platform that
provides educators with a more holistic
academic and social-emotional snapshot of
students' wellbeing by integrating data from
various sources
Supported the recognition of Clean Air Day
and secured multiple air quality monitoring
devices to improve the safety of our students
and school communities, with the first phase
of installations complete across the district,
including at Topanga, Palisades Elementary,
Marquez Elementary, Canyon Elementary,
Paul Revere Middle, Kenter Canyon,
Brentwood Elementary, Brockton Elementary,
Webster Middle, and Warner Elementary
Supported school communities affected by fires and cosponsored a fire evacuation drill for Mandeville/Brentwood
area with City Council to prepare over 1,000 community members in case of another fire
Supported new crosswalk project at CWC Mar Vista in partnership with LA City Council and LA Department of

Funded refrigerated food storage units at Emerson Middle, Brockton Elementary, Revere Middle, Nora Sterry

Funded Smartboards at Roscomare Elementary
Supported the Institute of Chinese Culture and
Language after school Program to remain at
Brentwood Elementary
Ensured delayed Maintenance and Operations
projects at Paul Revere Middle were completed
Funded a new air conditioning and heating
system at Nora Sterry Elementary
Funded fire damage repairs at Emerson Middle
and advocated to establish a new policy and
planning and continued learning for future fires
Supported Topanga Elementary’s efforts to
create more innovative District field trip
opportunities on nature trails surrounding the
school campus
Funded security upgrades at Webster Middle School, also benefitting Citizens of the World and Magnolia Science
Academy, as a result of our resolution to allocate facilities funding at co-located school sites
Ensured that facilities agreement between YMCA and Uni High gave students access to new recreational resources
Collaborated with the City and County to launch the
nation's largest college savings account program,
providing a $50 initial deposit for every LAUSD first
grader
Funded greener power upgrades at University High,
Community, Emerson Middle School, Palisades
