WiLS is a nonprofit cooperative that provides services to libraries. It is changing its name, affiliation, board members, and business model. It offers cooperative purchasing of databases, management of database subscriptions, an experts network, and shared digital collections. Cooperative purchasing of databases allows members to streamline subscriptions and see pricing transparency. The shared digital collections for public libraries and potential collections for other groups are highlighted. Feedback from members is encouraged to help WiLS understand needs and how to help members grow.

Diversity Equality Inclusive Initiatives in UCC and USCElaine Harrington
The goal of the International Librarians Networking Program (ILNP) is to assist librarians from around the world to network and expand their skills in librarianship through a cooperative and collaborative program. The program is designed to be self guided, allowing participants to form a collaborative relationship with one another for four months and the opportunity to continue networking after the program ends. The International Librarians Networking Program is part of the American Library Association International Relations Round Table.
The 2021 cohort comprised 62 people from 27 countries selected for pair networking. There had been 270 original applicants from 39 different countries. I was paired with Dr Win Shih, Director of Integrated Library Systems at the University of Southern California. The ILNP final project was to create an academic poster arising from the conversations during the four month period. We completed one on Diversity Equality Inclusion initiatives in UCC & USC.

Curating Community Digital Collections: Collaborating to Build Digital CapacityRecollection Wisconsin

ODU Libraries Community Advisory Board - May 10, 2023Timothy Hackman
Presentation to supporters of the ODU Libraries, Norfolk, VA. Includes a discussion of the Libraries' accomplishments from 2022-2023 and plans for 2023-2024 and beyond, including strategic planning, space planning, Naro Video collection, fundraising and community outreach, and more.
Although library collaboration is common and many libraries collaborate through many organizations, it is a relatively unexamined aspect of library work. Many descriptions exist, but little from the point of view of organization and motivation. We will present a framework for thinking about library collaboration and draw out some of the challenges successful collaborations face. We will also consider how collaboration is evolving and how trends may be accelerated. We will emphasize that collaboration is a set of strategic and tactical choices, that it is very influenced by people and politics, and that collective action poses problems.
These dynamics are very much alive in questions around collective collections. We will look at collections as an example of the consolidation vs autonomy dynamic we observe in consortia generally. We also try and provide some guidance about how a collective collections initiative would be shaped – to identify points where decisions and commitments need to be made. We consider retrospective collection coordination (digitization, resource sharing, shared print) which currently tends to be layered over relatively autonomously developed collections, optimized at the institutional level, and prospective collection development (where libraries work together to optimize at the system level through collaborative collection development, licensing and so on). We consider some different dynamics with licensed and purchased materials, as well as institutionally created materials (research outputs, …).
Library as Publisher: New Publishing Ecosystems John Warren
Many academic libraries are moving into the publishing landscape, and an increasing number of university presses are now part of their university library infrastructure. The business of libraries and publishers are now intertwined and overlapping. Libraries have been proponents of open access, whereas many scholarly publishers have been wary about, if not hesitant to implement, open models. How are priorities such as funding and sustainability achieved? The Mason Publishing Group, an initiative within the George Mason University Library, provides support and resources to the George Mason University community for creating, curating, and disseminating scholarly, creative, and educational works. Programs and services of the Mason Publishing Group include the George Mason University Press, scholarly communication and copyright, University dissertation and thesis services, the Mason institutional repository (MARS), electronic journal hosting and publishing, and data publication. Planned services include publication of e-books and conference proceedings. This session provides an overview of the current library publishing landscape and efforts at Mason to create and sustain this initiative.

In this session, attendees will hear about three different case studies for using 1:1 interviews as an information gathering method in a library or other municipal setting: 1) to learn how people currently use a city service and how that service might evolve to better suit community needs; 2) to learn about the wider community’s and individuals’ goals and aspirations, and challenges they see or experience in order to inform a library’s planning process; 3) to tell a more complete story of a community’s history through 1:1 interviews. Along with these case studies, session organizers will offer some best practices and practical tips for conducting 1:1 interviews to support these similar yet distinct information gathering efforts.

Lead the Way 2020: Facilitation Tools, Techniques, and Tips WiLS
Placing the community at the center of how the library plans and operates is vital, whether it is engaging residents to learn about aspirations or developing a collaboration with community partners. To be most successful when engaging community members or partners, quality facilitation is required. In this program, we share facilitator techniques and tools, including best practices for running effective meetings and holding conversations, that you can use to constructively manage both the process and people in different facilitation situations. In addition, we share our on-the-ground facilitator tips developed from our organization’s experience providing facilitation for different needs and environments.

You’ve gathered website analytics, run surveys, and observed how people use your website and other digital resources– now what? Impressive user research doesn’t matter much if the research isn’t used. More than just communicating what we learned in our research, communicating what we recommend for website or application improvements and framing the recommendations to our audiences in meaningful ways is a skill of its own. In this workshop, we’ll look at findings from several types of research projects and work through positive and negative examples of how the findings are used to create recommendations. This is useful for both qualitative user experience research (interviews, usability testing) and quantitative research (page analytics, usability scales). Be a better advocate for your users. Make the hard work from your interviews and other user research count!

Launched in December 2017, CCDC aims to 1) provide digital stewardship practicum experience for information school graduate students; 2) to help small or under-resourced institutions in Wisconsin develop and sustain a digital preservation program; and 3) to build community around digital preservation work within Wisconsin and beyond.

Personal privacy is no longer a guarantee in today’s society, but libraries are still seen as a safe haven for the public. With some libraries sharing full patron records with school administrations and others being tempted to bring in facial recognition into their spaces, it’s still a professional duty to respect and promote privacy. In this talk we will cover the ALA Privacy Subcommittee’s work, and what libraries can do to get involved.
The Library as Publisher: How Pressbooks Supports Knowledge SharingWiLS

Pressbooks is an open-source book publishing platform that makes it easy for authors to publish books on the web and produce clean, well-formatted exports in multiple formats, including ebooks, print-ready PDFs, and various XML flavors. In this presentation, Pressbooks’ educational client manager Steel Wagstaff will outline the values and principles that have motivated the development of this platform and share some of the ways that libraries (both academic and public) and other educational institutions are using Pressbooks to publish a wide variety of content, from openly licensed textbooks to self-authored novels and just about everything in between.

In this program, presenters will share deliberately developed approaches to peer support in their institution.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
