3. Subjective well being
• SWB refers to happiness. It is an assessment of person’s own
judgement of one’s life rather than assessment by any other
external evaluator like job, health, money etc
• People feel swb when they experience abundance of positive
emotions and pleasurable activities, less of pain and are satisfied
with life
• Swb and happiness is used interchageably
• A lot of questionnaires are available for measuring SWB but it is
measured by three components
1. Life satisfaction: cognitive judgement of how satisfied a person is
2. Positive affect: feeling about life. Refers to frequency and intensity
of positive emotions
3. Negative affect: feeling about life. Refers to infrequency and
intensity of negative emotions
4. Psychological well being
• Ryff (1989) came up with psychological well
being which is more than happiness. It refers
to positive psychological functioning across
life span and positive mental health. It
includes

1. Positive affect: Experience of positive
emotions (joy and happiness)
2. Negative affect: Absence of negative
emotions
3. Life Satisfaction: sense of contentment and
satisfaction in life

1. Self acceptance: positive attitude towards oneself
2. Personal growth: feeling of continued development,
open to new challenges
3. Environmental mastery: ability to manage complex
environment
4. Autonomy: self direction and possessing internal
standards
5. Positive relations with others: satisfying and trusting
relations with others
6. Purpose in life: possessing goals and beliefs that gives
direction to life

1. Social acceptance: holding positive attitudes towards
others while understanding their complexities
2. Social actualization: cares about and believes that
people have potential, society can evolve in a positive
direction
3. Social contribution: feeling that one’s life is useful to
society and valued by others (I have something
valuable to give it to the world)
4. Social coherence: has interest in the society and
believes that society is logical, predictable and
meaningful
5. Social integration: sense of belonging to a community,
feels comfort and support from community
