Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. It has a typical Mediterranean climate and is located south of the Italian Peninsula, separated by the Strait of Messina. Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe, is Sicily's most prominent landmark. The three largest cities in Sicily are Palermo, Catania, and Messina. Cannoli, a fried pastry shell filled with sweet ricotta cream, are a staple of Sicilian cuisine. Football is very popular in Sicily, though no Sicilian team has won the Serie A league.
