The city of Belgrade is located in Serbia and situated at the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers. It has a population of 1.6 million in the city center and 2 million in the greater metropolitan area. Belgrade has a long history dating back to Celtic settlements in the 3rd century BC and has been part of various empires throughout its existence. Today it is the capital of Serbia and an important geopolitical, economic and cultural hub in the Balkans region.
