Darren Rainey,aged50, wasarrestedaftersmearinghimself in

prisonofficersforcedhimtotake an 80 DegreesCelsiusshower.
These prisonofficershave beenclearedof all chargesdespite
fellow inmatesreportingthathe washorrendouslyscreaming
and lookedlike a‘boilinglobster’.Thisresultedinthe deathof
Darren andhe wasfoundthe followingmorning,dead,face upin

Thisis a representationof issues, asit’sclearthat abuse of power
and police brutalityisthe mainfocusof thisissue,alongwith
underlyingthemesof lackof justice.The judgesdefendedtheir
decisionsayingthatthere wasnoevidence of the officersacting
inany recklessdisregardforDarren’slife.Evenbeforethisincident,inmateshave reportedand
officiallycomplainedaboutofficersusingextremelyhotshowerstotorture andabuse inmates.It’s

If we compare thiskindof abuse to non-psychiatricwards,it’ssimplynon-existent.Consideringhow
much evidence hasbeengiventhatthe inmatesare obviouslybeingmistreated,if the inmates
weren’tdiagnosedasmentallyillinsome way,the prisonwould getshutdownnearlyimmediately.I
thinkthat because of the nature of the inmatesandtheirmental state, the prisondecidedto
disregardthe manyreportsof abuse and didn’tundergofull investigations.Hopefullythisincident
will openthe prison’seyesandshowthemthattheyneedtostart takingtheirmentallyill inmates
justas seriouslyasnormal one’s.
