Fibre to the home networks are growing but at uneven paces across Europe, with some countries like Spain, Finland, and Portugal seeing strong subscriber growth. Fibre networks are also starting to emerge in parts of Africa, with commercial networks launched in around 17 countries. As 5G mobile networks are developed, fibre networks will be crucial for backhaul and delivering high speeds, with some telecom leaders like Verizon already positioning fibre as integral to 5G. However, using fixed wireless or satellite could also serve some areas, and 5G fixed wireless may compete with fibre to the home in delivering broadband. - 2. The 33-year-old Rishad will chart future strategy, identify new business areas and help draw up a vision plan. Rishad will move into the strategy function from September 1, 2010. Wipro’s public float is about 13% and speculation has been rising in recent weeks that Mr Premji will sell some stake to meet the new guidelines.

Micromax, Spice, Karbonn and Zen are giving tough competition with feature-rich phones and ultra-low prices. The Nokia C1, which is priced at Rs 1,999, comes with flashlight, FM radio and call divert feature.

- 5. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada has announced a voluntary recall by Toshiba Corp of its notebook computers due to possible burn hazard concern. Subject to the recall are Satellite T135, Satellite T135D and Satellite ProT130 notebook. 41,000 units globally have been recalled.
- 6. $65 billion is lost every year due to inefficient supply-chain system in India. The retail industry is expected to touch $879 billion by 2018, but if the present challenges in its supply-chain system. Supply-chain costs in India are about 12-13 per cent of the GDP as compared to 7-8 per cent in developed countries.
- 7. India attracted $891 million foreign direct investment in the telecommunications segment the highest among all sectors.
