Weekly Wrap The barometer index, the BSE Sensex, rose 212.74
points or 0.59% to settle at 36,469.43. The index hit high of 36,778.14
and low of 36,221.32 in intraday trade.
The Nifty index rose 62.70 points or 0.58% to settle at 10,893.65. The
index hit high of 10,983.45 and low of 10,813.45 in intraday trade.The
S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.56%. The S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose
0.17%. Both these indices underperformed the Sensex.
The market breadth, indicating the overall health of the market, was
negative. On the BSE, 1,197 shares rose and 1,340 shares fell. A total of
140 shares were unchanged.
The outcome of the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) monetary policy
meeting, domestic macroeconomic data, trend in global markets, the
movement of rupee against the dollar and crude oil price movement will
dictate trend on the bourses in the near term. Investment by foreign
portfolio investors (FPIs) and domestic institutional investors (DIIs) will
also be monitored.
RBI's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled from 5 to
7 February 2019 for sixth bi-monthly monetary policy for 2018-19. The
resolution of the MPC will be announced on 7 February 2019.
In the previous meeting, MPC kept the policy repo rate under the
liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 6.5%. Consequently, the
reverse repo rate under the LAF remained at 6.25%, and the marginal
standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 6.75%.
