Social workers work with populations of people with different beliefs spiritually and religiously. As social workers we must learn to respect someone else’s values and beliefs. We also need to learn that people’s different values and beliefs influence their behaviors and interactions with people. We need to make sure that we respect other beliefs and not act on our own personal beliefs when working with clients. We need to be mindful of other cultures and their beliefs on such things like abortion and the roles of women. As a social worker I may believe personally that a woman should have the right to abort a baby but my client may believe abortions are not an option and may go against their religious beliefs. We must be mindful not to force our views on them. Another example would be in certain cultures they believe that the man is the head of the household and all communication and decisions will be made through the man. As the social worker we must honor that and not disrespect that by doing the opposite of what they believe just because its “normal or right” to us.
Explain one way your own spirituality or religious convictions might support your work with a client, and one barrier it might present.
As a social worker I must put my bias to the side and not let it get in the way of my professionalism. As a Christian I should not judge others this would be key in social work practice. This belief would remind me to stay open minded about others and why they may behave they way they do. A barrier would be me being judgmental and continuously bringing up my beliefs, forcing it on them and not respecting them. This is wrong and could cause a client to not feel comfortable or respected.

I used to think that culture was the values and beliefs of a group of people. But our text helps to understand what culture is. According to our text “culture is defined as the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication not through genes” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). In order to understand culture we can look at values, beliefs, language, and their way of communicating. We must look at the differences from culture to culture such as is it individualistic or collectivist orientation, the power structure, masculinity and femininity, their tolerance for ambiguity, orientation and indulgence and restraint. (Devito, J.A., 2016). All of these factors influence communication. “One reason why culture is so important is that interpersonal competence is culture specific, what proves effective in one culture may prove ineffective in another” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). We may have certain attitudes about things based on the culture we were raised in. In order to communicate effectively these attitudes and beliefs must be set aside. We have to have an open mind and see things from others perspectives. I was raised in a family that instilled good morals and values in me, I am a spiritual person not a religious one and I find all religions have one thing in common putting others needs before our own. I see everyone as my equal and have a positive outlook on life. I am mindful and considerate of others perspectives.
Cultural orientation is important for interpersonal communication when working as a human service professional for many reasons. First what is effective in one culture may be ineffective in another. Understanding the values that other cultures hold helps to promote effective communication. Understanding the religious beliefs of others is beneficial as well. For example if I was working with a client with SUD who was an Atheist and told them to look into spirituality or religion to help them find sobriety this might be offensive to them. So knowing their religious beliefs would be helpful in communicating with this client. The more we understand other cultures the better we will be at interpersonal communication with those individuals.

I used to think that culture was the values and beliefs of a group of people. But our text helps to understand what culture is. According to our text “culture is defined as the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication not through genes” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). In order to understand culture we can look at values, beliefs, language, and their way of communicating. We must look at the differences from culture to culture such as is it individualistic or collectivist orientation, the power structure, masculinity and femininity, their tolerance for ambiguity, orientation and indulgence and restraint. (Devito, J.A., 2016). All of these factors influence communication. “One reason why culture is so important is that interpersonal competence is culture specific, what proves effective in one culture may prove ineffective in another” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). We may have certain attitudes about things based on the culture we were raised in. In order to communicate effectively these attitudes and beliefs must be set aside. We have to have an open mind and see things from others perspectives. Women are often perceived a certain way within our society. These images differ between various cultures. Women in positions of power are also stigmatized and constantly struggle in the fight for gender equality. According to Hatton (2013), " Both women and men, they maintain, are highly sexualized in popular media. At the same time, scholars have examined the sexualization of women as part of a broader cultural ‘backlash’ against the gains of second-wave feminism and women’s increasing power in society" (p. 65). This study looks at the progression of media representations of power females over time. There is a lot of pressure for women of power to behave and look a certain way.
I chose to focus on the Relational-Cultural theory for this discussion. This theory centers on the development of women while being influenced by the cultural conformities. "Included within this theory is the understanding of how relationships occur within particular cultural contexts such as the devaluation of people due to their gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. Thus, the theory accounts for how discrimination, stereotyping, unearned advantage and privilege impact people’s sense of connection and disconnection. Therefore, another central tenet is that people grow (or fail to grow) in relationships that exist within a cultural context" (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, p. 125). This thepry can help influence our understanding of how culture, gender, race, class, and sexual orientation play a role in the different ways a woman experiences feminism.
In Tiffani's case, she is feeling the backlash of societal views on women. She was put in a position of prostitution at her young age. The men in the court room look at her in a negative light because of this. They don't see as a victim in her circumstances but rather a prostitute who broke the law. This is noticed by Tiffani and as a result, she finds herself feeling negative about her current situation. The next step to take with her would be to conduct a strengths-based approach to shed light on her positive attributes and actions. This will help her to feel more confident and take her upcoming challenges head on.

Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter

. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

I used to think that culture was the values and beliefs of a group of people. But our text helps to understand what culture is. According to our text “culture is defined as the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication not through genes” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). In order to understand culture we can look at values, beliefs, language, and their way of communicating. We must look at the differences from culture to culture such as is it individualistic or collectivist orientation, the power structure, masculinity and femininity, their tolerance for ambiguity, orientation and indulgence and restraint. (Devito, J.A., 2016). All of these factors influence communication. “One reason why culture is so important is that interpersonal competence is culture specific, what proves effective in one culture may prove ineffective in another” (Devito, J.A., 2016, Sec. 2.1). We may have certain attitudes about things based on the culture we were raised in. In order to communicate effectively these attitudes and beliefs must be set aside. We have to have an open mind and see things from others perspectives. I was raised in a family that instilled good morals and values in me, I am a spiritual person not a religious one and I find all religions have one thing in common putting others needs before our own. I see everyone as my equal and have a positive outlook on life. I am mindful and considerate of others perspectives.
Cultural orientation is important for interpersonal communication when working as a human service professional for many reasons. First what is effective in one culture may be ineffective in another. Understanding the values that other cultures hold helps to promote effective communication. Understanding the religious beliefs of others is beneficial as well. For example if I was working with a client with SUD who was an Atheist and told them to look into spirituality or religion to help them find sobriety this might be offensive to them. So knowing their religious beliefs would be helpful in communicating with this client. The more we understand other cultures the better we will be at interpersonal communication with those individuals.

Women are often perceived a certain way within our society. These images differ between various cultures. Women in positions of power are also stigmatized and constantly struggle in the fight for gender equality. According to Hatton (2013), " Both women and men, they maintain, are highly sexualized in popular media. At the same time, scholars have examined the sexualization of women as part of a broader cultural ‘backlash’ against the gains of second-wave feminism and women’s increasing power in society" (p. 65). This study looks at the progression of media representations of power females over time. There is a lot of pressure for women of power to behave and look a certain way.
I chose to focus on the Relational-Cultural theory for this discussion. This theory centers on the development of women while being influenced by the cultural conformities. "Included within this theory is the understanding of how relationships occur within particular cultural contexts such as the devaluation of people due to their gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. Thus, the theory accounts for how discrimination, stereotyping, unearned advantage and privilege impact people’s sense of connection and disconnection. Therefore, another central tenet is that people grow (or fail to grow) in relationships that exist within a cultural context" (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, p. 125). This thepry can help influence our understanding of how culture, gender, race, class, and sexual orientation play a role in the different ways a woman experiences feminism.
In Tiffani's case, she is feeling the backlash of societal views on women. She was put in a position of prostitution at her young age. The men in the court room look at her in a negative light because of this. They don't see as a victim in her circumstances but rather a prostitute who broke the law. This is noticed by Tiffani and as a result, she finds herself feeling negative about her current situation. The next step to take with her would be to conduct a strengths-based approach to shed light on her positive attributes and actions. This will help her to feel more confident and take her upcoming challenges head on.

Forming strategies to deal with diversity issues can be a tricky business. The popular approach today is political correctness, which unfortunately, is often neither political nor correct. This is not to say that it is acceptable to behave or speak in a disrespectful manner to or about other persons, or to tolerate overt discrimination against others. What it does mean is that we should be focusing on the underlying power associated with these terms, attitudes, and behaviors. An example is the current view of the use of the n-word. It is considered so demeaning and insulting that it cannot even be spoken aloud, yet everyone knows exactly what the n-word is. The point is that it isn't the word, but rather the cultural understandings and reactions that are conjured up by the single letter

. What we have done is to simply replace one word with another without changing the underlying meaning and power of the term. It seems that many think that by making the speaking of the word taboo, the racist meaning behind it no longer exists. Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

To begin, we must look within our own social and cultural understandings. We all have prejudices and ideological values about ourselves and others, and we talked about these in a previous lecture. One of the problems with the politically correct approach is that it labels people whose understandings do not conform to doctrine as either racist or sexist. This amounts to trying to eliminate derogatory stereotyping by applying derogatory stereotypes and is; therefore, just as likely to arouse resentment and resistance in the dominant group as it is in any minority group.
The first step is to overcome the reluctance to admit that we base our reactions to, or understandings of, minority groups on values and assumptions that may not be accurate or factual. As was pointed out earlier in the course, much of what we know comes from a very limited set of information sources. Most people with whom we interact regularly are more like ourselves than not, and we tend to place value and acceptability on those things that are familiar and comfortable. Our educational system has for many years placed White, middle-class, and mostly male ideals, achievements, and values at the core of our curriculums. Much of what is learned about minorities is negative, in the sense that they are presented as subordinate groups who performed menial tasks and are often portrayed as simple, child-like people who needed care and nurturing. Little mention was made of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, Elijah McCoy, Otis Boykin, Garrett Mor.

1. I selected two articles from this week’s reading that further explore intersectionality and
cultural humility. For the first article, Danso suggests that from a social work perspective,
cultural humility is a great form of anti-oppressive practice (2016). For my next article, the
authors explored how intersectionality affects discrimination in mental health treatment. These
authors report that people with mental illnesses who are of color and/or lesbian, gay, or
bisexual experience mental health disparities, including within mental health treatment
programs (Holley et al., 2016). These articles will be very helpful in this week’s reflection paper
as well.
Above you will see my intersectionality diagram. In the center of the diagram I have
included the important aspects of my identity. In many ways, my identity serves as a form of
privilege and power as I identify with various aspects of dominant culture. This leads to my
social location as being mostly visible. I added “mostly” because I do have several physical

2. injuries/genetic conditions that bring many challenges to my life. From the outside, one may
not know this about me and when people do find out, I often hear responses like, “But you look
so healthy” or “You are so young though”. Next, in reference to the political power structures
that affect me, I included local, state, and federal government entities. For example, San Diego
has specific policies that affect gentrification and prices of rent, which affect myself and other
residents. Thinking through economic and environmental power structures, it is important to
think through how entities like the Federal Reserve affect interest rates, our purchasing power,
and inflation. Last, when it comes to structural oppression, I included “privilege” because I
could not identify or think of ways in which I am structurally oppressed
As a social worker, this intersectionality diagram will help guide my assessments by
highlighting the importance of exploring intersectionality with our clients to understand what
aspects of their identity either help or hurt them. Aspects of our client’s intersectionality are
just as important to assess for as other elements in basic psychosocial assessments. The same
can be said about how great of a tool intersectionality diagrams can be for our own self-
awareness. Thinking through aspects of my identity and the way I am privileged and ways I am
oppressed increases self-awareness, which I think can lead to improved human connection with
our clients. For example, my whiteness, sexual orientation, and gender are huge areas of power
that I have that can oppress and harm individuals around me. These areas of power can lead to
personal biases like thinking dominant culture is the norm and is acceptable. Overall, personal
biases and values can hurt the therapeutic relationship with clients, can cause feelings of
distrust or animosity, and may not make client’s feel safe, leading to negative outcomes for the
client and social worker. In conclusion, what aspects of intersectionality should we assess for in
our future social work practice with clients?
