AND QUALITY)
&
PCORI (PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES
RESEARCH INSTITUTE)
Aspect of Outcomes Research
2. OUTCOME RESEARCH DEFINITION
Examine the end result of health services on individuals and is intended to
provide scientific evidence relating to decisions made by all who participate
in health care (Schmitdt & Brown, 2015).
3. ABOUT AHRQ (AGENCY FOR HEALTHCARE RESEARCH
AND QUALITY)
Invests in research and evidence to make health care safer and improve
quality
Evidence-based tools and resources are used to improve the quality,
safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care.
Creates materials to teach and train health care systems and
professionals to help them improve care for their patients
Generates measures and data used to track and improve performance
and evaluate progress of the U.S. health system.
(AHRQ, 2018)
4. AHQR POSITIVE OUTCOME RESEARCH
Opioids
Increase evidence base on this topic with data and research, and provides strategy to combat the opioids
crisis
Patient and family engagement
Offers tools and research to help patients, families, and health professionals work together as partners.
Ambulatory Care
Provide resources and tools improve the safety and quality of ambulatory care.
Antimicrobial Stewardship
coordinated programs within a health care setting that promote the appropriate use of antimicrobials,
thereby improving patient outcomes, reducing antibiotic resistance, and decreasing the spread of
infections caused by antibiotic-resistant organisms.
(AHRQ, 2018)
5. AHQR POSITIVE OUTCOME RESEARCH
Care Coordination
Coordination among health care providers improves outcomes for everyone by decreasing
medication errors, unnecessary or repetitive diagnostic tests, unnecessary emergency room visits,
and preventable hospital admissions and readmissions
Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)
Provides tools, research, and resources related to reducing CAUTI.
Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI)
Provides tools, research, and resources related to reducing CLABSI.
Diagnostic Error
AHRQ is funding research to better understand how these errors happen and what can be done to
prevent them.
(AHRQ, 2018)
6. AHQR POSITIVE OUTCOME RESEARCH
Falls Prevention
Offers tools, training, and research on preventing falls.
Hospital Readmissions
Offers tools, data, and research to help hospitals reduce preventable readmissions.
Quality
Offers information on the National Quality Strategy, data on health care quality, information on
quality measurement projects, and resources on quality.
Health Literacy
AHRQ's health literacy resources help health care professionals and delivery organizations make
information easier to understand and systems easier to navigate.
(AHRQ, 2018)
7. AHQR WASTEFUL RESEARCH
All Payer Claims
This AHRQ project was undertaken to advance the use of all payer claims database (APCD) data for
transparency efforts within and among States. For States to use their APCD data to compare price and
performance of providers within their States and across States, measures for use with these data need
to be developed and refined, and the data need to be standardized.
Disparities
AHRQ has reports, chart books, and data on health care disparities.
Surveys on patient safety culture
Through its Surveys on Patient Safety Culture (SOPS™) Program, AHRQ develops and maintains
surveys, toolkits, and databases for hospitals, medical offices, nursing homes, community pharmacies,
and ambulatory surgery centers; provides technical assistance and education; and promotes the use of
the surveys for patient safety culture improvement.
(AHRQ, 2018)
8. ABOUT PCORI (PATIENT-CENTERED OUTCOMES
RESEARCH INSTITUTE)
Establishes to fund research that can help patients and those who care for
them make better informed decisions about the healthcare choices they face
everyday, guided by those who will use that information.
Began funding research in 2012, and growing numbers of the studies are now
producing important results that are being published in peer-reviewed journals
or presented at scientific meetings.
Seek to fund useful research likely to change practice and improve patient
outcomes. Focus on sharing those results with the public. Work to influence
research funded by others to become more useful to patients and other
healthcare decision makers.
(PCORI, 2018)

10. PCORI POSITIVE OUTCOME RESEARCH
To address these problems, PCORI has funded clinical effectiveness research studies and
related projects to help patients and those who care for them make better informed
decisions about their options for preventing, diagnosing, and treatment for these
problems.
(PCORI, 2018)
11. PCORI WASTEFUL RESEARCH
Rare Disease
A rare disease is a condition that affects fever than 200,000 people. Collectively, however, rare
diseases affect about 25 millions people in the U.S.
Funded 29 comparative clinical effectiveness research studies to help patients and those who
