2. Outcomes Research:
Studies about the effects of care and treatments on individuals and
populations
Examines the end results of health services on individuals and is intended to
provide scientific evidence relating to decisions made by all who participate
in health care.
(Schmidt & Brown, 2015)
3. Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality(AHRQ)
Invests in research on the nation’s health delivery system
Goes beyond the “what” of health care to understand the “how” to make
healthcare safer and improve quality
Creates materials to teach and train health care systems and professionals to
put the results of research into practice.
(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018)
4. Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality:
Reducing antibiotic overuse and eliminating health-care associated infections
Discovering how to better provide opioid addiction treatment services in rural
communities
Incorporating the latest research findings into electronic health records to
facilitate clinical decision-making
(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018)
5. Patient-Centered Outcomes Research
Institute (PCORI)
Funds research that can help patients and those who care for them make
better-informed decisions and about the healthcare choices they face every
day, guided by those who will use that information (Patient-centered
Outcomes Research Institute, 2018).
Strong emphasis on helping people make informed healthcare decision
6. Positive aspects of outcomes research
AHRQ focuses on battling the opioid epidemic
Deaths from drug overdoses have risen steadily over the past two decades and have
become the leading cause of injury death in the United States. (Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018)
Important for patients and providers alike. With increasing use of opioids, patient
safety also needs to be considered.
My master topic is based on appropriate pain treatment to help decrease the use of
opioids.
AHRQ also focuses on the topic of infection control
Overuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance
AHRQ develops tools, research and resources to improve the use of antibiotics
(Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2018)
7. Positive aspects of outcomes research
(cont.)
PCORI’s emphasis on helping patients make better informed decisions
regarding their care.
Healthcare is all about the patient. When patients are better informed before
making decisions, patients will be more satisfied, thus improving patient outcomes
PCORI funds research such as:
Comparing two ways to help people with COPD stop smoking
By informing patients on different methods, patient can then choose which is best for
him/her, and will have greater success.
Different breast cancer treatments and how women feel about their decisions
Allowing patients to choose what is best for them
8. Negative aspects of outcomes research
Physical therapy vs internet-based exercise training for patients with knee
osteoarthritis (funded by PCORI)
If intention was to study effectiveness of internet-based exercises, I believe it
would have been more worthwhile to compare PT WITH internet-based exercise
training vs PT WITHOUT internet-based training.
All participants should have been able to receive physical therapy
I think this might have been wasteful. Although there could be a positive impact
with this study, I think it would have been even more positive if both groups
received physical therapy
