Answers questions 1 and 2: What organizations have been at the forefront of setting forth clinical guidelines for the nutritional needs of this age group?Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the USDAreleased the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010 in January What does the research say about the nutritional needs in this age group and what problems they face meeting those needs?http://www.mypyramid.gov/guidelines/PolicyDoc.pdf
These are the estimated amounts of calories needed to maintain calorie balance for various gender and age groups at three different levels of physical activity. The estimates are rounded to the nearest 200 calories. An individual’s calorie needs may be higher or lower than these average estimates. And obviously the descriptions sedentary, moderately active and active are subjective but this is again to give you an idea of the number of calories you should be consuming. So you would just look at the chart and fine your age and activity level to see how many calories you should be consuming per day, so since I’m 23 and moderately active it says I would need 2,200 calories but I think I need a little less than that cuz I’m not exactly the tallest person.
The only thing that really changes between 18 yrs old and 19 is that the amount of calories from protein increases and the total fat decreases for both genders. I know that we are just repeating or reiterating what we said earlier but research has shown that the more you know about dietary guidelines and nutrition the health and the better you will eat.
2. What problems do they face meeting those needs?
Investigate and describe the nutritional options found on your campus.I don’t want to go into huge detail about these dining options mainly because a lot of you are already familiar with them and also because most of them are located in Allendale and I know a lot of us do not spend a lot of time on Allendale’s campus. I do want to point out however that most of the dining options we have on campus are very similar to a lot of other college campuses in that the food they serve is very high calorie and high fat.
