2. Introduction
Fast food is the term given to food that is prepared and served very
quickly. Any meal with low preparations time can be considered fast
food, typically the term refers to food stored with preheated or
precooked ingredients. It is delicious, filling, is readily available just
any of the day, being only a drive through phone call.
Fast Food is all good tasting, except that it is not nutritionally
balanced and therefore, unhealthy in the long run if consumed on a
regular basis. It is loaded with calories from refine sugars and fats,
which are repeatedly reheated to high temperatures for frying
purposes.

5. History
The concept of ready cooked food for sale closely connected with urban development. In
ancient Rome, cities had street stands that soldbread, sausages.
Pre-Modern Europe
In the cities of roman antiquity, much of the urban population living in insulation
depended on food vendors for much of their meals. In the middle ages large towns and
major urban areas such as London and Paris supported numerous vendors that sold food
items suchas pies, flans, waffles, wafers.
UnitedStates
The American company WHITE CASTLE, founded by BILLY INGRAM & WALTER
ANDERSON (1921), is generally credited with the opening the second fast food outlet and
first Hamburger chain.

Fast Food has been designed to be eaten “on the go” often does not
require traditional cutlery, and is eaten as finger food.

12. A Survey Report on Obesity
Obesityaccounts for 300,000deaths in the U.S. alone.
According to a survey by the institute of food technologies, 75% of Americans are eating
their dinners at home, nearly half those meals are fast foods, delivered or taken out from
restaurants.
Statistics place India in 10th place in fast food per capita spending figures with 2.1% of
expenditure of annual totalspending.
According to the National Sample Survey Organisation, survey in the year 2005 released
by the Delhi government, people living in Delhi spends Rs 371, on an average, on processed
food and beverages per month.
They spend Rs 290 on vegetables and around 1/3rd of it on fruits. The total value of fast food
consumed in India in 2003 was about Rs. 41,000 crore, as published in an article in
newspaper ‘Business Line’ on July 13th 2005 by Sudhanshu
Ranade.

14. Steep Rise In Fast Food
Consumption in India
In a survey, ASSOCHAM claims that Indian food processing market will show
fast placed growthin the next 5 years .
The survey points out that these convenience foods are preferred (86%)
mainly by nuclear families or by bachelors.
According to survey, metropolitans are the largest consumers of fast food
disclosed“D. S. Rawat, Secretary General, ASSOCHAM.”
“Rawat” said that the consumer spending rate on processed food has
increased at an average rate of 7.6% annually during the years 2008-2010 and
this was expected to continue as the consumer expense would rise with an
average of around8.6%till the year 2012.

18. Conclusion
Fast Food became an integral part of life of the developedand alsothe
developing world. As we have discussed earlier that fast food have
some advantages like time saving, easily accessible etc. and some
disadvantages like it creates health problemand is responsiblefor the
decreased amount of socialization.
So, in the conclusion we can say that the disadvantages of fast food
outweighs the advantages of fast food. Fast food may be convenient,
cheap and have a wider variation, however, these advantages can
easily contradict themselves as they can encourage the person to over
eat, leading to various health concerns. So, keeping in mind the
disadvantages of fast food, the key to eating the fast foods is
moderation, occasional consumption and preferably in small portions.
