SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES: Hotel Segments – MoM Bookings & Cancellations

SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES
Bookings & Cancellations: MoM Comparison from Nov 19, Dec 19, Jan 20, Feb 20 and Mar 20
If we look at South East Asia, the bookings were up in Dec, declined slightly over Jan and Feb and then a steep decline in Mar.
→ Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam have shown a pattern similar to that of South East Asia.
→ Singapore has shown a continuous gradual decline.
→ Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia have remained flat over the months till Feb but posted a steep decline after that.
If we look at South East Asia, the cancellations were flat till Jan, then a slight decline in Feb but a steep increase in Mar.
→ Indonesia and Philippines have shown a pattern similar to that of South East Asia.
→ All other countries has shown a similar pattern but the increase in cancellation in March is slightly less.

Across all countries, all major cities have shown decline in Feb and March. The declines in Mar is more than -50% everywhere.
The cities of Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia have shown decline in the entire quarter.
Singapore has shown decline since November onwards.

All the cities across multiple countries have shown increase in cancellations in the month of Mar.
The cancellations in cities of Indonesia and Philippines is more than 200%. Malaysia has shown cancellations >100% in some cities.
Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam has shown minimal increase in cancellations in Mar.
Siam Reap, as an outlier, have shown decline in Feb and Mar.

Bookings: MoM Comparison from Nov 19, Dec 19, Jan 20, Feb 20 and Mar 20

All type of hotel segments have taken severe hit in the month of Feb and Mar.
In the month of Feb, the avg. decrease is around ~-15% whereas in Mar the decrease is greater than -50% across all segments.
Local chains and global chains have been affected similarly.

Budget hotel and international chains have shown steep increase in cancellations in Mar.
Malaysia and a few Indonesian hotels have also seen increasing in cancellations in Mar.
The global chains and Thailand have witnessed decrease in cancellations in Mar.

  • 4. 44 SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES Bookings & Cancellations: MoM Comparison from Nov 19, Dec 19, Jan 20, Feb 20 and Mar 20 If we look at South East Asia, the bookings were up in Dec, declined slightly over Jan and Feb and then a steep decline in Mar. → Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam have shown a pattern similar to that of South East Asia. → Singapore has shown a continuous gradual decline. → Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia have remained flat over the months till Feb but posted a steep decline after that. If we look at South East Asia, the cancellations were flat till Jan, then a slight decline in Feb but a steep increase in Mar. → Indonesia and Philippines have shown a pattern similar to that of South East Asia. → All other countries has shown a similar pattern but the increase in cancellation in March is slightly less. * March data is till 29 March 2020 – RateGain Research Lab
  • 5. 55 Across all countries, all major cities have shown decline in Feb and March. The declines in Mar is more than -50% everywhere. The cities of Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia have shown decline in the entire quarter. Singapore has shown decline since November onwards.   • 6. 66 All the cities across multiple countries have shown increase in cancellations in the month of Mar. The cancellations in cities of Indonesia and Philippines is more than 200%. Malaysia has shown cancellations >100% in some cities. Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam has shown minimal increase in cancellations in Mar. Siam Reap, as an outlier, have shown decline in Feb and Mar. In the month of Feb, the avg. decrease is around ~-15% whereas in Mar the decrease is greater than -50% across all segments. Local chains and global chains have been affected similarly.
